Message of the video: it's okay to copy something as long as you make it better
No as long as you put your own spin on it
It's hard to separate that concept from simply republishing the same thing under a more recognized brand name. It's the quickest route to profit, and underpins the examples in this video. If the copies added something new, trimmed the fat, or simply re-envisioned the content, the only tangible difference is that the same content was produced by one but added to the success of another. The infinite recursion argument from this video is the only thing that gives a plagiarist the excuse of "well, you didn't invent that either, and so you should be happy that I made it popular, and thus, validated your effort."

As a Dutch person, hearing Van Gogh's name pronounced like this is very satisfying. Closest pronunciation I've heard from someone who isn't native. Now that is original.
@3:36 you can just listen to how it's pronounced properly on RUclips lol
I am a huge fan of Van Gogh, and learned the correct pronunciation from my young niece, who toured Europe several times and visited the famous museum where most of his work hangs. I always pronounce it the correct way, and everyone corrects me...its never ending. I'm glad you posted, it makes me feel better. I like Van Gogh so much I don't want to say his name incorrectly!

I'm glad you commented! I always want to hear how the people in the country of origin pronounce names we are familiar with, but may not have learned correctly.
I can't remember the name of the museum where most of his work is (do you know the name?), it was not large, but my niece was just overwhelmed, she is an artist and loved everything there. She also said the people were very nice and friendly (As a 6 year old, her mom married a man who loved to travel a great deal, and she went around the world with them until she was in her late teens. I loved hearing her views on where they went, she had an incredible gift for talking to anyone, and as a beautiful little girl from California, always attracted a lot of attention).
I am convinced if children could travel for a couple of years around the planet, they would become much better citizens of the world. The benefits would create interactive nations and understanding, instead of the ignorant xenophobia so prevalent today. I realize how expensive it would be, but I still think it would be great.

As a writer I live in a constant struggle. Almost every time I come up with an idea, I do research and find that the same story pattern has been used in a book hundred years ago. I just need to learn not to care that much.
If you write as a profession (or dedicated hobby), I would suggest that you don't focus so much on the story pattern, but more on how it is carried out and add your own personal spice to the main factors that drive the story forward. A good writer can turn any common-day occurance into an event worthy of a reader's highest attention. As such, it's not the occurance that is important, it's how you tell the story about it.
@@Real_MisterSir Shit that is _so_ entirely true!! If you are a master at storytelling then you could entice someone or bring them to tears even as you tell them how the mc skillfully peeled his apple then drank his orange juice before going to the store on a stormy day. It's all in the words, not necessarily the plot itself.
I too stumble on upon this problem quite often. Usually, I just continue to break down my idea (if I find out its already used) into smaller chunks, build upon those and then try and match it togheter. Seeing if I can create something "original". Of course, building on top of a concept is what I belive is the best possible thing, as it grants a completely new perspective.
But either way.. I wish you the best of luck!
I think a better video title would have been: Your Brain Can't Comprehend A Blank Slate.
I suspect what is happening is that the struggle to find something "completely original" is what's at issue, resulting in a short circuiting and your subconscious brain scuppering you. I've got no expertise in this matter at all, but it might be that taking fiction and rewriting it as many ways as you can could break you out of the lull, teaching your subconscious that "originality" can't exist in a void.
As an artist I have decided to simply not research if what I want to do has been done before. If I did I would never get anything drawn.

Sometimes an artist has an idea they think is so good, it must have been something they had seen or heard from another artist and just forgot the origin of. The opposite of "cryptomnesia". Paul McCartney had the idea for the song Blackbird in a dream and when he woke up he thought it was a song he had heard somewhere before. Despite his best efforts to find the original work, he eventually gave up and pitched the song at his band mates. It was an original work afterall.

Well, the Bible backs you up on this one mate; Ecclesiastes 1:9
@Wade Haden perhaps you should read the verse in Ecclesiastes. The point of my comment is how Ecclesiastes fits the theme of this video.
I play guitar. 99.9% of what I play I have copied from others. Yet when I write a song, it is mine, even if I get the idea from something or someone else. When I write fiction, I am borrowing from my own experience or what I have heard or seen. Fascinating, Thoughty2! It doesn't however take away my enjoyment of it.
Star Wars, Avatar, Robin Hood, Pochohontis, Terminator and so many others are all the same story. A beautiful warrior princess, her renegade knight and a motley crew of misfits fight overwhelming odds and prevail. We all love that story.
If the brain has to draw upon prior memories, then there would be no such thing as technology at all. We'd still be living in trees.

Library of Babel. QED. It has been done
Yeaaah, I dont buy this one cheif. Sure, most ideas usually draw inspiration from one or more sources, but it's a massive stretch to say it's impossible to have an original idea. Let's take a fantasy trope of orcs and elves for example. Those had to be created at some point. There would have been a time when those were new ideas. And that goes for almost everything. It was a new, original idea at some point.
Thank you. This was my thought from the beginning of the video. Also, the fancy smartphone I was watching the video on didn't even exist when I was born.
I guess the point is that everything we make is inspired by something else.. smartphones were inspired by normal phones, which were inspired by telephones, which were made by experimenting ideas until success, which started with a simple idea (how to communicate from big distances), which was inspired by normal communication and the lack of better communication. The point being is that we always aspire to make things better, to improve. But in order to have an idea, there always needs to be a thought process, a comparison, experimentation, inspiration and motivation. It has to start somewhere, from something that directly affects us in some way.
Elves are from norse mythology
he literally says that there was a time where an original idea was possible
I honestly think that my number one goal in life right now is to one day, sit down in a pub with Thoughty2, and just talk for hours lol.
First off let me just point out that the fact that there only 7 proposed categories for fiction plots doesn't inherently mean that all fiction plots are derivatives of only seven ideas, it can also mean that the seven categories proposed are very broad! For instance let me rephrase the 7 proposed categories to make it more clear just how broad they are. Overcoming the monster = there is an obstacle somewhere in the story. The quest = there is a goal. Rags to riches = things get better. Tragedy = things get worse. Rebirth = things change. Voyage and return = to go someplace and come back (this could also easily be considered a subset of the quest with two goals). Comedy = expectations are subverted somewhere in the story.
Yes, of course, there are combinations. e.g. rage to riches could be a tragedy or a comedy.
@@calvinmasters6159 In this video, Thoughty2 makes the claim that an original idea has not been possible "for at least the last 2000 years" ( 5:24 to 5:43 ). I believe that this claim is so colossally incorrectly that it is absolutely inexcusable for any adult with a healthy frontal cortex to make this claim with conviction. To show just a few of the vast number of counter examples, here are some truly original ideas that have been conceived in the past 500 years: quantum mechanics, nuclear reactors, Turing machines, electrical transistors, lasers, EMPs, special and general relativity, calculus and a whole range of fields in mathematics. In order to further defend his misguided thesis, Thoughty2 postulates "in most creative fields there are actually a very limited number of possibilities that can be realized" ( 6:21 to 6:30 ). In order to try to prove this point, he then proceeds to attempt to site Christopher Brooker's seven possible plot categories as supporting evidence. This is both stupid and illogical. Just because you can group a set of objects into a small finite number of groups, that does not put a constraint on the uniqueness of the objects inside the group. For instance, every integer can be categorized at either even or odd, yet there are still an infinite number of unique even numbers and an infinite number of unique odd numbers. To stay on the themes of books, what Thoughty2 is claiming is very similar to claiming that since all books that have ever been written can be categories as fiction or nonfiction, all works of nonfiction must be derivatives of another nonfiction book except for one original nonfiction book that was written more than 2,000 years ago, which would be a very stupid claim to make.
