Woodturning - OK I give in!...I'll make a Bowling Ball

- As soon as I make anything slightly round, there are many suggestions to make a Bowling Ball, so here it is...a Bowling Ball! And yes its probably off balance enough to be of any use.
Made to within the standard specification size for a Ten Pin Ball. The wood is actually a piece I found in a shop, someone probably thought it was artistic, I bought it as I thought I could make something with it. I have no idea what wood it is but its certainly hard on the tools and weighty.
Made purely for decorative purposes, it will be for sale on my website tomorrow, its the choice of the buyer to either launch it down a lane or have it as a display piece.
Finished in Danish Oil

Interesting bowling ball Matt.
I think it is teak wood, teak is recognizable because it feels slightly greasy and soft, but the wood is quite hard, and when worked it smells a bit like old leather.
color choice is perfect!

Beautiful..but I don't think it will roll eventually cause wood weight and resin weight will throw its balance out..but it makes for a challenging bowling game. After a few scotches everything rolls straight anyway 😂😂
I raised the issue of it being off balance when it's been suggested before, but agree scotch will improve things, even if you can no longer see the desired target
I wonder if that's regulation legal... Would be a hell of a flex to have made your own ball.
I’m guessing the balance would be pretty terrible given the lack of a core and the uneven distribution of mass. Would probably be difficult just to control the ball trajectory.

Beautifully done. I do wonder how it would roll, as the weight would be distributed irregularly. I know you weren't trying to make a playable ball, that that was never the point. 😊
super pretty, i'd be worried that lane equipment would shred it though. but maybe on a hand set lane it'd be safe

Rather than use this beautiful piece of work as a bowling ball (I'm not sure the epoxy would survive long), maybe adapt it to be a bowling competition trophy.
