Amazing song and Amber is right, Jim is singing about sneaking into the backdoor of a house while the husband is away. It's a cover of an old blues song by Willie Dixon and back door man was a term used back then.
The Doors were around for four years (in terms of recordings) and just cranked out so many great songs. Jim was a genius but so were Ray, Robby, and John. And that bass? That's Ray Manzarek using a keyboard to play the "bass" with (IIRC) his left hand on a keyboard while his right hand plays the keyboard.
A lot of their songs in the studio did have real bass like this one. They often got top studio players to do the parts, but this one was Robby. Ray always did the keyboard bass live though.
"I open my front door... I hear my back door SLAM!!!! I said, hey hey baby, that must be your newfangled BACK DOOR MAN!" - Led Zeppelin, SINCE I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU
I was born in 77, after Jim was already gone, but I’ve been absolutely obsessed with this band my entire life! Many already told you what a back door man is, but I also want to mention the little girl part… it’s just a phrase that didn’t age well; it simply meant young woman. As for songs, you haven’t done their most popular yet, Light My Fire. It’s a must! I also love Crystal Ship, LA Woman, When the Music’s Over and Spanish Caravan. I can’t wait to see you react to more!
Then you should listen to El Maestro of the Spanish guitar: Paco de Lucía (for instance, 'Entre dos aguas'; there's even a video here on YT). As Mark Knopfler famously said: "When I first heard Paco de Lucía, I realised I didn't know how to play the guitar".
Written by legendary blues songwriter Willie Dixon and recorded by Howlin' Wolf in 1960...it's the perfect marriage...Jim Morrison is one of my favorite voices in rock, and Howlin' Wolf is one of my favorite blues singers...
I'm just waiting for all of us to decide when we think they're ready to hear The End, it's a trippy psychedelic masterpiece from The Doors; and I'm just waiting on your guys' reaction to that one. 😅
Awesome song and video. You should next think about doing "Light My Fire" "The Crystal Ship" "L.A. Woman" "Not to Touch the Earth" "Soul Kitchen" - all classics! The Doors didn't tour with a bass player but they used one when recording their albums. Ray played bass keyboard during concerts.
You’re right Amber, Jim is “creeping” in the back door while the little girls (woman’s) man is going out the front door to work. This might freak y’all out but there is no bass player in The Doors. The “bass” is played by Ray Manzarik on his smaller organ with his left hand while he also plays the regular organ with his right hand. They did use studio bass players occasionally on certain songs, but most of their songs have Ray playing the bass notes with his left hand. They liked that they were a band set up differently than most bands. That’s why their music is so unique and wonderful.
The Doors were one of my faves (I’m 73). 4 guys, keyboards playing melody with one hand and bass with the other, drummer, guitar player, and singer. Saw them in Baltimore in around 1970 or so. Just 4 guys on stage playing music. Still my favorite concert of all.
I love the fact that Ray laid down the killer bass lines on this and other The Doors' tracks with his left hand on a bass keyboard while playing organ with his right hand.
I come in thru front door hear my back door slam..lyric from “since I’ve been loving you”.. same thing here. Basically a salesman who comes thru town and cheats with the wives.. men eat the pork n beans for dinner but the women makes the stranger chicken.

"...da men don't know but da little girls understand...". You don't need to think too hard about what it means. Seriously? Same with line (written by Willie Dixon of course) "...I eat more chicken any man seen". Jim Morrison does such a great cover of this Willie Dixon song and of course he and his band mates take it to a new level.
When I was a mailman in Berkeley in the '60s, if the lady of the house was home and friendly, we'd make what was called a "back door delivery." (wink wink) Btw, "Back Door Man" was written by Willie Dixon and first performed by Howlin' Wolf. Check it out!
New subsriber here! Hi, Rob Squad! One thing that made the Doors exceptional is that, for the first five albums, organist Ray Manzarek played the bass piano with his left hand + the organ with his right hand simultaneously!
Back door as a reference to cheating. Husband’s leaving out the front door to go to work and dude’s creeping in through the back door so no one sees him. I have seen the clips taken from the short "film" and each and every song is perfection!! Plus, Jim is a pleasure to watch. Thanks for another excellent reaction video!!
So many more songs y'all gotta react to: "Moonlight Drive" "The End" "Not To Touch the Earth" "The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)" "The Soft Parade" "The Crystal Ship" "End of the Night" "My Eyes Have Seen You"
Back Door Man surprised you don't know the term. Yes, the back door man was the guy sneakin' in the back when the husband or boyfriend was gone. This was The Door's rock version of a classic old Blues song, going back to the 1920's and probably even before that. The Allman Brothers did their own song, "Cause There's a Man Down There, Might Be Your Man" with the same subject matter of the cheating extra guy on the side sneaking in and out of her back door that you have already listened to, I believe. You listen to such great stuff, so many artists I've recommended that you love. I DO hope you check out Maria McKee and Lone Justice, "East of Eden" and all the other tracks on their debut album!
This was the Doors' first single although many think it was Light My Fire, which really was huge and put them on the map. If you haven't heard L.A. Woman, that should be your next one by them. It was the last song recorded by Morrison and he seemed to put everything he had into it.
Jim Morrison was a great singer & could work the stage. He was a rebel, loved by all his fans, hated by leaders…they didn’t like the hippy scene & the anti war protesters. Jim didn’t care what they thought, unfortunately the Florida officials wanted him arrested for nudity. This is when he split to London, England. We never saw him again, sadly.😪 Thank you for playing his music!👍👏👏👏♥️♥️🌹
“Back door man” refers to the man on the side, who slips out the back door as the man of the house is coming in the front door.
This response is correct. When he says, "the little girl understands," he's talking about the cheating wife.

Light my Fire is one of my favorites from the Doors.
I am sooooo proud of you guys. Y'all have matured and grown so much. You guys are the light of my life. ❤
This song is nothing but ATTITUDE!
I like the live version of this from The Doors Absolutely Live. Jim's scream is absolutely blood curdling!
My favorite doors album is the soft parade. Morrison was a poet and a genius
