It has created a culture of systematic dependence to freebies, which made many of us to be lazy entitled citizens. And for the ANC this makes sense because the more reliant we are to the ruling party, the more we view them as santaclause or our saviour/cheap solution to our problems which is equal to votes for the ANC. Hence, other foreign nationals (be it Africans, Asians or Europeans) get here and start dominating.

In SA there's a need for a structured leadership skills training institution. Just imagine hearing a leader vocally stating it out that he's gonna make all businesses to employ as according to his own will (ref: Malema statement). That's a terrible childish type of an idea in need of perusal by his own entourage in the decision making. Does he ever start by engaging with the entire TEAM on a round table before saying whatever comes out of his own mind? . He can't just want business owners to do as he wishes. It is true. I run a trucking company that ships across borders; by industry standards, we offer competitive salaries and benefits. Guys come, want foreigners dismissed and when we offer them contracts, they argue that what is offered is a pittance. They leave, we hire and next time there is political rhetoric about foreigners, they come back. My company bears the full cost of hiring and halting employees all to satisfy a group of entitled people who don't bother to apply but are quick to make demands. Of course that is not a national problem and could well be tied to a mob with ties elsewhere. But, it does not dismiss the reality I see everyday. First to apply? Foreigners! First to make unmerited demands even without being an employee? Locals!
And I'm supposed to seriously employ you when you walked in carrying entitlement on your head and no room for compromise on your shoulders? Not if I want to also have a return on the risk I took to invest capital into the business.

Behaviourally, South Africans are more prone to make unsustainable demands and are more likely to go on strike but this does not always augur well for the welfare of the particular industry as a whole. Every employer wants industry stability, which leads to growth and creation of jobs and that is why for some employers the presence of foreigners is a blessing to their business. It is not always about the payment of low wages, but productivity with minimal industry disruption.
I also understand that many South Africans do not want to drive across borders and many do not have passports, so what must an employer in your industry do?

@@rigbyrigbone5407 1. I will only respond from my experience and therefore not claim to know solutions for the entire industry. I would prefer hiring locals precisely because the business is located in SA and the long-term benefits will clearly be better for SA's economy, my business and the drivers concerned. However, as I stated in the earlier post, locals have often come with demands from the onset - demands which have a direct bearing on the key market that the company serves. At one point the idea was to have strictly locals on local routes (smaller market) but you can imagine what volatility that creates. We are caught between a rock and a hard place and as it is, unfortunately we hire those who want to work NOT for lower wages but for the wages that the industry itself has standardised. We play by the rules and others come with rules of their own. It's a no brainer which way I'd rather go. A prospective employee can freely make their rules elsewhere. I promise, I won't follow them to disturb them wherever that is. This brings me to an often misrepresented state of affairs at lest in my work area. The notion that a business such as mine pays lower wages oddly based on a prospective employee's demands and not the industry standards. For example, where the standard income for a junior driver is R2 and I offer R2, you find a local who (perhaps because they feel they are entitled more) insists they want R3. Sadly, under such circumstances, the best I can do is wish the local well as they continue to look for a job.
      As an aside....
      2. What worries me is, how will the same prospective employees respond to driverless trucks? If I buy such a truck, who do they blame next? The manufacturers? Business is an ecosystem with no race, ethnicity and claims to belonging.

It is sad, really really sad to see how Zimbabweans are treated in South Africa 🇿🇦 considering how much Zimbabwe accommodated and cared for South Africans for over 20 years from the 70s to early 90s. Zimbabwe is a peace loving nation and a lot of African countries sought asylum in that country as well as going there for academic reasons.
I understand how some South Africans feel about Zimbabweans in their country but if only they could help themselves at home they wouldn’t be where they are right now.
The point i’m making is let’s just unite and learn to live together like brothers and sisters.

Excuse n excuse, there’s no way that South Africans don’t apply if necessary advertising is done. But employers with this perception that South Africans don’t apply is nonsensical. The thing is they don’t pay living salaries n they pay transportation n stomach salaries n they expect South Africans to take that. In restaurants they pay low salaries n the owners are getting huge profits. That’s why they prefer foreign nationals bcs they don’t have the voice to complain, they just comply.
