I just stumbled across this channel. I am an ASA Instructor, and teach 101, 103, 104, 105, 106, 114, and 118. This is an EXCELLENT start to what I cover in ASA 104. I will point my students to this.

As far as dumping sewage from the holding tank, I was told on my certification trip that the law is 3 miles from any US coastline (but never in ANY inland body of water) or 1,000 feet from any British coastline. "So guess where it's mostly dumped in the VI/BVI's? " the skipper asks his crew.

Wow. These videos are 3 almost years old already; time files! Perhaps the information about black water discharge in the BVIs is out of date. When was your certification trip?
Always obey the local laws! Next priority is following the rules the charter company sets out because if you don't they will stick you with a fine/surcharge. Usually we find, in the Caribbean, that common courtesy demands more care with black water discharge than the local laws and charter company guidelines require.
I wish they had more strict discharge regulations in the Caribbean; that would mean every head was equipped with holding tanks so that we could be as courteous as we feel we should. The BVI do seem to be working on it: bvinews.com/new/stop-boats-from-pumping-human-waste-in-bays-lawmakers-told/

@@SavvySalt Hey! Super cool link about the black water situation. Thanks. Yeah, it's a big ocean, but I was surprised on my certification sail that we (and thousands of other boats probably) were just dumping into the channel. The locals probably don't want that, but it opens up major headaches for the charter companies and marinas. It's probably a discussion that is long overdue.
Here's a link to my little (amateur) certification video I did in APR2017 (ruclips.net/video/tEjT-yX4d4g/видео.html). I'm doing my very first charter in June!

And the speaker is wrong about pump outs. There are pump outs. Nanny Cay is one of them. Ask your charter company on the policy they encourage.
