From my personal experience, and most of these comments, contraltos typically grow up thinking they can't sing. We sounded horrible because all day long we were trying to sing like these high girly songs and repertoire. How many times have we thought: "gosh, I can sing the men's part so much better", and then to feel embarrassed for sounding like a man? This is exactly why I wonder if contraltos are really all that rare, or if it's just most of them get accused of being unable to sing at a young age or completely misclassified and therefore never advance to a more professional level.

I am writing a book about the contralto voice. I'm kind of sick how underrated and underrepresented they are. Most of the public have never heard the word contralto and have no idea what that is, which is very unfortunate
For those who are new to female vocal range classifications, from low-to-high, they are: 1) contralto, 2) mezzo-soprano(s), which are operatically sub-categorized as dramatic, lyric, and coloratura, and 3) soprano. The contralto voice is the least common register and is typified by a dark richness that really resonates for me. REPLAY . . . !!!
@@ChollaRanch that’s confusing for me, because I’m 32 and I only heard the term contralto a few days ago. I grew up hearing alto in virtually every context, and I think contralto actually has a much lower range than alto, doesn’t it? Maybe I’m wrong.
Bei Bei of China, I have no idea what she was saying but it sounded so good. Chezelle of South Africa marvelous. Claudi Andas knocks you over. Ok, this compilation is superb.
Being a contralto and not knowing it is like having a medical condition you can’t get a proper diagnosis for, because singing is also a physical endurance. I have a rib condition which was misdiagnosed for YEARS. I experienced the same sense of relief learning I’m a contralto as I did when a doctor finally gave me answers. I couldn’t sing the Star Spangled Banner growing up. The notes at the end were always too high. My peers-and even some teachers-teased me about it, so I gave up in my teens. If I can’t get as high as the other girls, and can’t even sing MY OWN national anthem, why bother at all? Now in my 20s, it turns out I’m not the world’s worst singer. I’m a contralto, and just have to start the anthem really low. We have to start a lot of songs on the lower end to compensate for the key difference. That may sound bizarre on songs only ever sang one way (like the Star Spangled Banner where you’re expected to sing like Whitney Houston or as high as Mariah Carey), but contraltos, and even tenors have to.
Contralto is very hard, and rare to hear from female singers, it's like a male voice. These people are unique. The best example is Giorgia Alò's "Fast Car"
The woman singing "Sound of Silence" reminded me of a contralto I sang with in a group back in the late 80's; sounds like they have about the same range. She could hit lower notes than a couple of our tenors.
Just realised I must be a contralto too. Loads of these songs are on my “If I had the confidence to sing in public” list as they are easy to sing for me. I feel strong and powerful in my chest when I do sing in that range. 🤔
Us contraltos' range actually lies in the chest, that's why you feel that way. We don't strain our voice in the chest, unlike going to head voice if we try go higher.
That's how it should be girlfriend! Contraltos voices operate like men's voices do. They can sing almost everything with a strong chest voice. They take up their chest voice so high they're basically high tenor with that ability
My mom is a contralto and she spent her life being told she “can’t sing”. I figured out as I learned more about singing that she can, in fact, sing quite well - but she was being made to sing in the wrong key! She started practicing some songs, and she has amazing depth - but I can’t go as low as she can so I sing what I can to get her on key and then she kind of takes it away, and I pop in for the higher notes. We’re having a hard time finding songs for her to practice though.
Sadly, popular pop songs just expose us to the sopranos the most like Ariana Grande, so we're led to believe if you sing "like a man" and you can't sing high, then you're a "bad singer". It's absolute bullcrap. Anyway, you can actually change the keys of any songs to fit your mother's contralto range. As long as she knows the octaves she can sing at, she can change the song's keys (some say it's helpful to know music theory).
I wish l can hear you sing together with your mom!!! Very common vocal colors in contraltos is akin to sunsets and chocolate. I personally do not like songs written for the typical female voice (starting at F3), l can sing much lower than that (around D3). I am better off singing songs composed for the male voice, often in the same key. The best money notes on a contralto are in the fourth octave just like the guys anyway.
That was interesting. Juliana Belyaeva and, especially, Chezelle Shahadat were in a vocal league of their own. Chezelle went _way_ below what Wikipedia thinks is the usual lower range for a contralto. You made good song selections. Speaking of which, I was watching some of your older "Battle and Knockout" videos the other day and thinking that you made some excellent song choices when putting them together. Thank you!

I wasn't confident because I couldn't sing most popular songs because of the high notes but I was always trying to sing the wrong range and thought I wasn't "good enough". Once I made a recording for a friend of a friend's psychedelic rock band of a weird original song based on Alice in Wonderland. Since it was original there was no other version in my head and there was no sheet music so I just listened and read the words and sang in the register comfortable for me, it sounded incredible, despite the strange lyrics. It was the only time I heard my voice with a professional mic and pop filter. I just became interested again after discovering I was actually contralto. Yes l question both a little bit. However Kamila is singing in a slightly higher key which does not engage the chest register too much. It's good she sang it differently though, gave me some ideas! @@askalice7222 Hehehe, if it happens there would be no tickets, unless all who attend donate for a charity. Just hoping we would not have to pay for police protection if they actually paid to hear me sing and find out they came to the wrong show. Does it count that my sister likes to hear me sing?
Kamila and Adele are not Contraltos. Adele is a Mezzo. Kamila is either a Soprano or a Mezzo.
Yes l question both a little bit. However Kamila is singing in a slightly higher key which does not engage the chest register too much. It's good she sang it differently though, gave me some ideas! I think Adele is sort of borderline. She can belt a G5. That said other Mezzos belt up to E5. Adele certainly has a low voice though. Still I can't belt as high as her. I belt up to D5 (one note below G5), just like Bruno Mars, a high Tenor.
3:35 I love that aggressiveness on that buzzer considering how much struggle these girls might've been through with that kind of voice ...well done...🤩🤩
Why is Diana Ankudinova not in this :DDD.
Juliana Strangelove The Voice Russia "You can Leave Your Hay On" AWESOME 6' Contralto
I believe you intended to write *Hat* instead of hay. LOL (You can make corrections by moving your cursor to the right of your comment to see a trio of stacked dots appear. Just click the dots and select Edit to make changes, or else select Delete and rewrite your comment entirely.)
@@ChollaRanch That's right! 😊
Ok I do not think Adele is an alto but would classified as a mezzo but her performance was nice touch
Not only am I a contralto...I have this screechiness that makes me sound like I smoke 2 packs a day lol Singers like that make me feel less selfconscious about it😅
Kamila is definitely not a Contralto lol.
22:48 Mina Lund - "Unstoppable" (The Voice of Norway) wow wow wow
Listen to her other tracks with Voice! ruclips.net/video/vdgrUmX28Pc/видео.html battle
Voice Norvay cool track ruclips.net/video/kXpNbb0o5mM/видео.html
suddenly everyone in the comments is a contralto now
That woman singing The Best, WOOOOW
Loved it!
She's the best ♥️
Wow!! All these ladies are amazing and singers after my own heart!! As I mentioned to you before that I have a deep singing voice for a female (guess I’m technically a contralto, too), I’d like to think that you did this one just for me, Pure. 💁🏻♀️😉 😍👏👏
I would love to sing with you hehehe.
MikeEgypte, ditto! 😄
@@ithilnin123 I'd love to be in the audience for that!!
I didn't realize this was called contralto. It's a favorite for me definitely.
Alice Lookingglass, awww, thanks!! ☺️💕
I believe that many are unaware that the term “contralto” exists, but they think it’s different or cool when they hear someone that sings it. 😉
Ithil Nin, make sure I remembered you when editing this video.
I already said I'd love to watch or listen to a video of you, so ... I'll wait : ))
I always wondered what my vocal range was and was so disappointed when my friend said I wasn't a tenor because I felt like my deep notes weren't appreciated. Then I found out I was a contralto and watching this compilation makes me love my voice more 😊
24:53 always impressed with the 'hands on' style of Tina Karol when her talent is performing!
lots of encouraging movements and expression!
My goodness 😍 that was incredible 👍👍 I will be watching this one again. WOW!
James Couch, grateful : ))
Georgia sang a very touching Fast Car. She has that classic dark mournful voice that is so unique
Giorgia Alò stunning voice to go with stunning looks.
OLJA,,SHOULD HAVE WON THE BATTLE,BUT TINA WAS TOO BUSY THAT DAN,,HE IS CRAP
There are different types of contralto, which sounds very different. Most of this contealtos are dramatic contraltos. The lyric contralto sounds more soft and warm, but still deep, rich and heavy.
On some of these you can see the judges going, "Huh. ok... Wait a minute... Is that... a WOMAN?" *pushes button*
WOWOWOW! Absolutely the best content on RUclips! Thank You pureemotionmusic, once again a fantastic compilation. There were several I've never seen. And Thank You for a vocabulary lesson, had to utilize my dictionary.com app, I didn't know what contralto meant. I listen to your playlists while I'm at work they make my days so much more enjoyable! 😘💖
P.S. I just love Claudia, that is one of my all time favorite auditions..
Thanks AK007 Campbell, I'm happy to make your days more musical and thankful for the words : ))
Adele isn't contralto though 🤔
I guess the song was low enough (?)
“Unbreak My Heart” was superb!
Diana Ankudinova, a russian singer, is also a contralto!
Wow discovered recently that I can actually sing but in the lower ranges 😮😮😮😮been delusional all my life
Adele is a mezzo with a good timbre, she’s said so herself 😊
The one of south África.... That is a true contralto!!!
FANTÁSTICO!!!
Bravo!!
São todas incríveis!!!!
Que nível, Pureemotion, e que grande presente você me deu! Eu adorei!!
Muito obrigada!
🤭😘😘
Obrigado Musik!
😘🙂
Contraltos should try metal (every controlato xD)
They shouldn't limit their voices to a specific genre
ANYONE THAT CAN SING SIA SONGS MUST BE AWESOME
24:53 Olha Balandiukh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Bei Bei the best voice in sing sound
I got goosebumps. I'm not even sure what's my voice type. I think I'm an alto but can reach notes because of belting. I always admire soprano but this compilation made me love contralto singers😐❤
Rita Kron - It's Raining Men fantastic cover👍👍👍🇸🇰
Adele in the voice Holland. Omg, that woman is gonna make it one day
Some of these are obviously just darker Mezzo-Sopranos and even Sopranos, but the Contraltos were killing it.
Which people did you identified as non-contraltos?
@@marrallo Russian one is for sure mezzo
The only true contralto here is Giorgia Alò.
Great compilation! Loved it very much. Thank you pureemotionmusic!
David Hakobian, thank you! You're always welcome : ))

Q. whatever happened to "Bei Bei" from China? she has such a powerful voice_ hopefully she went on to a successful singing career?
8:11 Giorgia Alò - "Fast Car" (The Voice of Italy)
Cosi celeste is her best performance in the voice 🔥
Thank you for this compilation!!
Holy shit that Sound of Silence ❤️

My god!!!!!! Tina.....that’s where you where hiding.
Wow!! All these ladies are amazing singers after my own heart!! As I mentioned to you before that I have a deep singing voice for a female (guess I’m technically a contralto, though I often sing with the baritones in choir), I’d like to think that you did this one just for me, Pure. 💁🏻♀️😉 😍👏👏
Of course he did! for the other post!
MikeEgypte, oops I didn’t realize that my comment had posted twice! 🤦🏻♀️

@@ithilnin123 You know one of the saddest parts of the day is when the video ends--and then you have to wait until next Saturday. (but don't change it--I love it)
I like it
Because she is so beautiful😉
I have bass voice. Contralto voice is higher in one octave. Bass can sing contralto songs.
Lina Mund is unstoppable
Mina Lund?
@@olegsol5070 😂
Mercy me just breathtaking
And holy cats!! I believe I'm speechless
What the world needs now is for you to be a coach on the Voice of your Choice.
Please excuse me 'll be back when I find my words...
Yes you are right! If Pureemotion were one of the judges, it would be wonderful!
Thanks Alice Lookingglass, I'm flattered by your words : ))
I would say Pure is already a coach or judge at least in how he selects the ones for his videos--no matter how many chairs they get add 1 if they show up here. Pure is just about the only one I know who agrees with me so often when someone only gets 1 or 2 chairs--if he likes them he will put them into his video, many or most others require 3 or 4 chairs--talent.
😱😱😱 MARAVILHOSO LINDAS VOZES👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😍😍
Obrigado, muito obrigado
Maravilhas , sempre palavras pra definir tanto Talento!
Trying my very best not to cry in the first song, but bursted into tears on fast car
