    Epiglottitis is an inflammation of the epiglottis, which is a small flap of tissue at the base of the tongue that covers the windpipe during swallowing to prevent food from entering the airway. This condition can cause severe respiratory distress and is most commonly caused by a bacterial infection, particularly Haemophilus influenzae type B.
