  • Northside College Prep's Filipino dance troupe, Isang Hakbang, has been the most consistent high school competitor in Battle of the Bamboo. This year they won the competition, making history as the first high school to do so.
Their performance, known as "The Legend of Mount Kanlaon" is a Visayan folktale following the sacrifice of Anina, a Visayan princess. In the story, a seven-headed dragon terrorizes the village in search for an unblemished maiden. All of the villagers cut themselves, disqualifying them from the sacrifice, and Anina offers herself to the dragon to stop the violence. As Anina is rushed away, a man named Khan Laon appears to slay the dragon and save Anina's life. Using his ability to talk to animals, Khan Laon summons ants and eagles to help him defeat the dragon. In gratitude, Anina marries Khan Laon and the village rejoices. The Philippine volcano, Mount Kanlaon, receives its namesake from the heroic deeds of Khan Laon.
The dance was choreographed by Stephen Guerrero, Christine Oliva, Cyan Balantac, and Prim Duragos with music composed by Maanas Bhatt.
