Simone was the rightful winner because:
Katie was heavily talked about and was expected to win several gold's
Maya was expected to contend for a medal after coming in 2nd to Katinka in a different race
Lily was also expected to win her race
Simone upset the world record holder as well as her sister, who represented Australia! So yeah that was the race of the Olympics

Great for Simone, but I hope she, others in the USA and around the world stop labeling her achievement as first African-American or first black athlete; it's so undeserving and should not be singled out in this way. Her heritage and color has nothing to do with her achievement. She achieved it the same way Phelps and Ledecky achieved it: hard work, dedication, discipline and love for the sport. If one wants to highlight how exceptional her achievement was, it's better to say that she is the first among the group of underprivileged female American swimmers to win an Olympic gold medal. The same applies to Lia Neal of course, who pioneered this and many more will follow.

agree. But her swim was so amazing for the African American swim community which is why they mentioned it. No hate to anyone! Just spreading love

While I understand your point, it's also important to note that representation matters. Now that she has done it, other black girls will realize they can do the same. Plus, her win draws attention to the fact that the stereotype that "blacks can't swim" has more to do with economics and lack of opportunity than actual ability. Money being funded into certain programs can give more black people opportunity -- much like what has been going on in tennis and gymnastics.

Why didn’t they let her accept the trophy when she went up on stage?...

Well, when this sport is dominated, was dominated, by white males and females, its important to note this huge accomplishment for her as a Black woman. Being the first black woman to win such an amazing thing is HUGE!!!
Same with Tiger and other 'first' black athletes. And, If she is OK stating that she is the first AA woman, then I luv it!!
She has made history, black history and we are proud of her, very proud.
Hell, i wdv never heard of her had i not decided to watch olympic trials and im so glad i did!!
GO FOR THE GOLD SIMONE!! ❤

Simone wasn't even known before this but she took FOUR medals. Katie obviously smashed it that year but that can't take away that Simone deserved an award. Four medals is just.....huge accomplishment,
