my fav tune is cavatina so beautiful and emotional then everything else from this man i love but cavatina is my fav. i love being transported to diff scenery in tunes, this vibe always remind me old spain village where there no phones but generations of family having fun in the candle light and having food, wine, good family time on a warm summer evening. Like a scene from a romantic book i think off. love this man music.

I have been checking out their work and as an old metal head myself I think the guitar work is great...not a fan of the growling but I've listened to their more progressive work without that feature and I'm enjoying it...and yes I can hear the slight Al Marconi influence in their music...lol
Keep on listening man! i know a lot of people that hate death metal (and even metal as well) and they love Opeth. Seriously, it takes some time, but hopefully it will grow on you and you'll be amazed! Still Life is another great album to listen, but it's more "romantic" in terms of melodies and riffs and all that stuff. Maybe it'll be a good starting point for you!
And now that i listen, the first arpeggios reminds me of the song "Death Whispered a Lulaby" from Damnation. Check it out if you can, it has no growls!
I'm not sure about a starting point...I was there many years before these guys were around. I gave up playing trash metal in the 80's! No plans to return to electric guitar now...I much prefer my own direction but I have enjoyed listening to their albums and what I like is the complexity of the guitar riffery, better then most and definitely more typical of the progressive movement.

I immediately think of the silent hill game The Room when I hear a dark guitar. I think the song was called The Last Mariachi or something like that. The soundtrack for the silent hill games are the best! The game was hard for me to beat but I enjoyed the challenge even after all the rage quits.
