      Are you going to do the whole pilgrimage? Or just part of it? Be very careful if you do it by walk there are many sections that are not made for people to walk and you will have to go through tunnels where cars zip like hell.

    How are bodies even buried in Japan? Japanese cemeteries look like they so densely packed that there seems to be no room.

      I am not 100%, there may be some exceptions but we normally do not bury ppl in Japan

      The bodies get cremated and the ashes put into urns and placed under the graves, stored in special facilities (there are a few in Tokyo, because of little space of some temples) or could be taken home to put them at the home altar.
