- Apple rival Xiaomi, the world's third-largest smartphone maker, launched its first car earlier this year in China. The SU7 starts at less than $30,000 and has proved popular, with the 2024 production run selling out in days. Is the SU7 worth the hype? Business Insider takes a closer look at the EV, which is only available in China.

Test-driving The $30,000 Chinese EV That Ford's CEO Loves: Xiaomi SU7 | Business Insider
He came with a determination to spin everything positive into substandard.
He's biased and favours American and European cars, for political reasons.
@@TrevorWebb-ck2yv In reality he isn't that much biased because I've seen his reviews. Here he's following the editorial policy of Business Insider
jealousy to china advantage compare to american shit car
I didn't finish watching his video as I heard him saying the range would be about half of what's claimed, I was like "are you serious or what? This car has been tested by SO many people and confirmed about comparatively high level of realistic range percentage, definitely higher than 50% at least when not in winter", then I scrolled down and saw your comments lol.
😂
When he has a bias in his heart, none of his words hold any water
is that a chinese proverb lmao
I would say, as European, that if I had a 673 HP EV available for the same amount of money I paid for my 180 HP Audi A5 eleven years ago, I'll buy it in a blink... Meanwhile, the pathetic Q4 Etron which is much more expensive, uglier and slower, still comes with drum brakes in the rear wheels...
This is the temu version of Tesla
@@Ronmexico211 "When he has a bias in his heart, none of his words hold any water"
@@kunchen3278 he’s not bias, he knows it’s already inferior to that of other EV’s.
Truth be told. Non of the german EVs can compete with this. It looks better and the infotaiment is insane compared to anything the german brands have put out so far.
Tesla: hold my beer.
Tesla almanmı😂😂@@KP-xi4bj
the car it copied from? The Taycan?
@@RomanticPopPunk the car that clocks in around 120k with actually less range and less good infotainment?
@@RomanticPopPunk Dude the Infotainment on Taycan is PAINFUL to use. No one Should to copy that junk.
I've driven both taycan and Su7. In terms of smartness and autonomous capability, this Su7 is much further ahead. it is also seamlessly sync with Xiaomi's phone, part of Mi ecosystem. This is what most other car makers simply cannot compete with. The germans simply rely too much on their Tier1 suppliers for the subsystems . Therefore the development is rigid and slow.
only works with Xiaomi phone though, if you want seemless integration. Like if apple made a car. Most people in the world have either an android or an Iphone. Might be comparable to carplay 2.0
@@abc123fhdi I've driven the car as well and you don't really need any integration. The car itself is a phone that runs the apps. Voice assistant is intuitive. HOWEVER it supports Carplay on its 16" screen...wild for a car made by a competing smartphone manufacturer.
@@abc123fhdi not true , it also support iphone
@abc123fhdi Xiaomi Phones use a version of Android.
@@abc123fhdi Apple can never make a car. It's not in China. Only phone companies in China can make cars. Apple tried to avoid getting involved in the Chinese supply chain. So it failed inevitably. No company in the world can make EVs without being a part of the Chinese supply chain.
WiLl iT mAkE iT gLoBalLy!? yeah.. Asian EVs are the popular option virtually everywhere in the world, apart from the US because of its protectionist measures..
South Korea and Japan have sold EVs in the US for years
@@arion9696 Newsflash: They aren't the only automakers in the entirety of Asia...
@@Unhomiee Fine. VinFast is selling EVs in the US as well. Tata, Mahindra, Perodua, and Proton are however absent from the US market. The Mahindra Roxor is not even street-legal
@arion9696 This is Chinese, though. The upcoming president has been vocal about Chinese imports. Even if it does come to the US, it's not going to be this cheap if increased tariffs go into effect. And I'm sure the direct competition against Tesla will not be welcomed here either by Musk and others. Hope I'm wrong about all this, because then the consumer (including myself) wins in the end.
Canada wants to be a leader in the green transition.
So they put a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. 🤦🏻♂️
Canada wants to be green but Canada wants to be their US master's barking chihuahua first and foremost.
why that’s Merican logic 😂!
You might not understand how tariffs work and that's okay! If Canada wants to be a leader in the green transition, they need to protect their local EV industry. To do that, they put a tariff on Chinese EVs to encourage Canadians to purchase locally manufactured EVs. Chinese EVs with low production costs due to poor labor compensation would outcompete local EVs otherwise.
@@KaiBurley Tariffs protect nothing. Tell me you know nothing about economics without telling me you know nothing about economics.
@@KaiBurley You mean protecting the U.S. auto companies.😂
Not good reporting. You ignored or purposely missed the some important features. For example, while driving on the road, you see a car in front of you, you can ask the car “what car is it?” The car will actually find it out for you. Or if driving by a scenic place, say a lake, you can ask the car “what is the name of the lake?” “Are there vista points around here?”. I haven’t seen a single car that smart in the USA. Not my $70k Lexus. Not my wife’s $90k Mercedes Benz.
And if you see a bicycle or motorcycle on the road ahead of you, can it also find out which bicycle or motorcycle it is, or is this only for people who are interested in other cars?
@ yep, that works too. You can also find out the business names around you. You can also tell it “navigate to the closest movie theater” things like that.
@@manimalworks7424 I highly doubt it can tell me what brand or type of bicycle someone riding (unless it takes a photo of the logo/brand and just uses text recognition).
@ yes, it actually takes the photo, send it to the AI server for processing and send the result back to the car.
I doubt most western consumers care about any of that, it’s like the go pro or drone fad you use it once and in the draw it goes.
I have a Xiaomi SU7 Max electric car, and I've been driving it for more than a month. I feel very happy and worry every day that I don't have enough reasons to drive it. I think the reason Xiaomi can make such a market-popular car is actually quite simple: Xiaomi's CEO, Lei Jun, put in 100% sincerity, with no deception, no excessive markup, just making a good car and selling it at a price that allows the company to continue to develop. This is just like SpaceX's rockets by Elon Musk, which are excellent and affordable. This kind of strategy is only possible in companies led by founders with deep passion and vision, and where the founder has complete control over the company.
Chinese car designs and tech are decades ahead of all others
lol no. The designs are clearly copied from other established brands as has always been the case. But the tech is impressive, especially at those prices.
@daudimasinde6280 okay 😂

I'm Europen, I don't believe that everything from China is high tech (plenty of cheap garbage), but so far they have became a industrial powerhouse in lots of sectors, and putting tariffs alone will be as sucessfull as was putting them against the Japanese cars in the 70s...
XIAOMI it’s a mobile phone company, and they started their efforts in the EV sector for the first time like 3 years ago and this is the product that shocks the world. How its US gonna compete with this kind of “competitor” 😂
It's going to shock ⚡⚡ the world literally 😂
Tariffs.
Its not only mobile phone company
By not letting Chinese car companies into the USA. Biden said so before he was not allowed to run, Harris said she wouldn’t let them in and so has Trump. The two factories that were being built in Mexico have stoped construction as of now.
Because it’s made poorly, just google Chinese EV battery fires. The US will have no problem competing with self combusting cars
The appliance and phone company was able to make a car. Meanwhile, Apple tries to reinvent computing with VR headsets. Have we (the West) lost our ability to compete and create products people want?
apple could make an ev easily, but, they want 50% profit margins
It was unwise to announce it, knowing the margins are thin. Apple could have developed the software but never did.
Also, it's just sad that we have Rivian struggling to keep costs low, while our government, on the other hand, doesn't know how to shield us from the influx of Chinese EVs.
@@JogBirdThat's where the West (USA, Germany) the Likes of Apple and VW will lost. The days of 50% margin is over! The Chinese are way ahead, a lot faster, cheaper and people are poorer. Either the West Catch up or become Irrelevant.

Hey give Apple some credit. Apple also tried their hand at making a "iCar". Sure Apple spent almost 10 years and 10 billion USD and ended up with nothing while Xiaomi spent 3 years and 1 billion USD and ended up with a smash hit, but at least Apple tried!
Model 3 = The base car, estimated at 377 miles of range on the CLTC cycle, comes in at a more conservative 272 miles on the EPA. then
Why when it comes to SU7, it becomes half of that ? pls explain.
Soon these EVs will sweep the markets of developing countries like they did with smartphones.
Us,canada added 100% tariffs on them
Probably not. We dont even have enough charging stations in America in most places. How will they get charging in developing countries?
Um no. The West isn't even buying the EVs we make, why would we buy Chinese made crap?
@@PatTube99 Why would developing countries use the same outdated infrastructure as the US? Decentralized electicity generation is easier to scale and deploy than fossil fuels, and that's a good fit with battery-electric applications.

One of the most politically biased videos I've watched about a tech/automotive product
The cool thing about this car is that it supports an assortment of first party and third party accessories that connects directly to the car's system. The row of buttons underneath the big screen and that speedometer above it are accessories. There are connector pins in the back of the screen to attach them and they sync with the car's system once detected. So for those who want physical buttons instead of just interacting with the touchscreen can get the physical buttons unit. I think there are also ambient lights you can attach to the sides of the screen.
The guy appears really pissed off.
The standard version of cltc at 434 miles is mega impressive but the guy is saying it will only do 250 miles ay all times?
You didn’t mention the Napa leather seats ( heated, ventilated, massage ) , the 15 spkr sound system , the glass roof , the space , card access, super fast centre screen , self parking , voice command , AWD, Brembo brakes, etc etc etc.

Crappy Tesla has no chance. This is far better than anything American!!
What did Fords CEO say? I never heard anything in the video.
Ford CEO imported this car and has been driving it daily for six months. The video is the interview where he said it.
Jim Farley said he didn't want to give the car back.
He's been driving it daily for at least 6 months and he said he would not let go of it.
100% Tariff……so won’t see here on the US for 30k……like many future Chinese products🙄🤣
This is probably true, but why the laughter? One of the main beneficiaries is a billionaire ceo who is still seeking an additional $55 billion compensation from a company with only $15 billion net profit in it's entire existence, after ruthlessly firing tons of Americans while blatantly lying to the public about "full self driving" and "every car will earn you $30K a year passive income as a taxi". How do you feel positive about us getting inferior cars at inflated prices rather than the consumer getting the best car for the least money? Let me guess, you have stock in the company... Sell it now bc the largest EV buyer market in the world is China and cars like this are going to eat tsla alive by Q2 2025.

What i admire about this car is that you can attach buttons to the screen (they're connected on usb-c port), many car makers just stuck a giant screen and call it a day (which could work, if you make the UI easy and quick to use, and the animations don't glitch but i still prefer some buttons).

That’s a Biden tariff
You do understand that many of these companies are government backed so they can sell them at lower price-point and outcompete competitors that are not government backed?
As soon as an industry is gone it takes decades to build it back up during which time one is completely dependent on in this case China and they can set the prices when they have a near monopoly
Why are you complaining that you can get a car which is good and affordable? Who could care less about the profits when the customers is getting the benefits.

The case AGAINST electric cars:
Need gas? 5 minute fill-up stop. Need charge? 5 HOUR fill-up stop.
0-80% in half hour. And its cheaper
@@andrean2247 The most affordable models (and that's being generous) do not do that, nor do they have the capacity of the 100K models. The location and scarcity of charging places makes electric cars impracticable for the next 20 years. All the Dem "strongholds" that SAY they champion electric cars are actually just scamming the public. Take California, they siphoned off 7.5 BILLION dollars for charging stations.....in TWO YEARS they built EIGHT charging stations...and the rest of the money gone. So here is the hard truth about electric cars: The Republicans would back them if they were practical (if they could compete in the marketplace without billions of dollars in set asides). The Dems have (so far) been using it as a political scam for diverting taxpayer money. BOTTOM LINE is that NOBODY is supporting electric cars for the sake of electric cars.
