Most of them have been clunkers of one flavour or another, and all the ones built last century relied on special rituals to start, keep going, and other functions. I'm a skeptic, an atheist, a man of science - and yet I have behaved like a tech-priest or wiccan or Catholic at times to make sure the machine spirit was appeased.
Imperial Ships 'killed' during a battle are disabled but rarely destroyed. They've found ships 'abandoned' centuries earlier, only to find the decedents of the crew continuing their duties aboard ship in perpetuity. Communicating with them might take some work but the ship hasn't degraded and in some cases limited repairs done.
While not the Navy, the Of Mars trilogy takes place for most of the series pages on board an ancient Ark Mechanicus, of indeterminate age, named the Speranza, found and unearthed beneath a forge world. It is described as a "microcontinent". It measures around 130 km long, requiring a fleet of attending vessels, and serving as a shipyard for all of them. While there is a mag-lev hyperrail running along the spine, the ship features *teleporters* for especially urgent travel. When it was unearthed, and retrofitted back to functionality, it was (somehow) moved into space; this process took 5 centuries of the forge world's entire production. Once in space, the noospheric dataload of the ship's systems merely coming online turned the forge world below into a magma waste, as all of the nuclear reactors failed simultaneously.

The roleplaying game Rogue Trader had rules for orbital bombardment and lances are described as such: "When used in a planetary bombardment, the initial impact area of a lance weapon is relatively small, typically no more than a few metres. Anything directly hit by a lance is completely annihilated, with no chance of survival. However, the ensuing blast wave affects an area of roughly one square kilometre, setting buildings afire, boiling away bodies of water, and leaving little behind but ashes and molten stone". It then goes into the mechanics which amounts to: anything directly hit by a lance is just gone, game over. Anything within a 500m radius of the lance strike will take heavy damage. Fortified buildings might survive and heavy vehicles like a Leman Russ might take some damage. Lighter vehicles will likely be at least disabled, if not destroyed outright.
There is something truly special about these guy's ability to make you feel like you are just hanging gout with your friends nerding out and joking about lore you either know or are learning about.

I love the Warp-Drive refuelling being likened to a funeral procession, with the fuel being delivered in big metal coffins, so the chems that are pumped into you and "protective gear" you are wearing can make you last until you reach the reactor
The Ravenguard have had my interest since you guys went over the 20 primarchs. Love you guys work, I've always heard about 40k and it's influences in different fiction, but never could find a way to get into it proper. You've been the best way to get some form of understanding of the lore and setting.

I remember a short story I read years ago about refueling the core of a ship. Rather than forcing a slave to do it instead an elderly crew member who spent his entire life in honorable service is chosen by the captain to preform this final act of service. It was a whole ritual where the guy chosen is draped in the red of Mars as tech priests chant their binary canticles while waving incense, no one noticed the tech biologist stick him with a needle that turn off his pain receptors, he is given the 'holy vessel' as the tech priests kneel and bow their heads to him. Any one of them would have jumped at the chance to interface directly with the heart of the ship but the captain couldn't spare them. As he is about to enter the core room he looks back one last time at his family and his captain, who is saluting him, and smiles a content smile. The outer door shuts behind him and his name is engraved on the wall of the corridor leading to the core room joining the thousands of others who performed this honor before him. It was a nice story, one that I think would be the norm cuz using a slave for this is stupid, why give them one last chance to defy his master and sabotage the heart of the ship?
As for why a slave woundn’t sabotage, my gueds are twofolds: - The slave doesn’t know how to do it in the first place so his sabotage would only consist in not inserting the fuel rod (maybe hiding it somewhere but I doubt he’d have the time). I’m not even sure that a techpriest in these conditions could sabotage the core. - Most importantly, the slave likely has friends or family on the ship, why endanger their lives from your actions? Also I imagine they can use servitors for this task instead of unaugmented slaves Fun fact, Space Marine Terminator Armour is based off DAOT Protective Suits to interface with Plasma/Fusion cores
