- Miami Resort Demolition: Blowdown is an explosive four part series profiling some of the most challenging projects of Controlled Demolition Inc of Phoenix, Maryland.
Each of the structures, some notable, others notorious is unique and present the team with challenges ranging from the structural, to the explosive and to the bureaucratic.
In this episode, the team from CDI travels to Bal Harbour, in Miami Beach Florida to take down an old resort complex set in the middle of some of Florida’s most expensive real estate. The Sheraton Bal Harbour Beach Resort played host to Frank Sinatra and John F Kennedy, just days before his assassination. Designed during the post World War II boom the Sheraton was one of North America’s first luxury resorts. Over the years the shine on the resort’s crown tarnished and developers purchased the property to make way for a billion dollar condominium/hotel development.
The stars of the film are the two major structures that make up the core of the resort’s property: a 17 storey hotel tower, and a 12 storey parking complex with hotel rooms on the top floors. The demolition team struggles with the proximity of the neighbors - one set are just 18 feet away - and the difficulty of undermining a structure built to withstand hurricane forces.
To bring the two towers down the team will use both dynamite and shaped charges - over 500 pounds of blasting power. The shaped charges are high velocity explosives - the same technology they employ is used in armor piercing shells and warheads. The team uses the charges to cut structural steel found inside the towers.
The team comes in to work the Miami job strait from another demolition: the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. They have just ten days to prepare, load and implode the resort complex. Major concerns are the proximity of the neighbors, undermining the structural steel in the resort towers, and the dust cloud created by the implosion.

This building, as well as being beautiful and extremely well designed and built, had a historical value for Miami...I cannot understand and accept that such a masterpiece can be demolished...
@Shelia Farmer Unlike that POC, this building was well engineered. You can see the difference by the thickness of the columns. The way it fell shows the build quality.
Man, I can't say enough about how well thought out and executed these demos are. Amazing to see how each section and material is carefully calculated, engineered and focused to hit a bullseye like a top level marksman. The timing is as good as a professional musician! Good work all!
Never thought I'd be so invested in a demolition film. Loved every minute. The expertise is impressive.
Yeah, never knew it takes so much expertise. Very cool.
No substitute for experience. Great to watch people who know what they are doing.
I think the science of demolition is amazing!
I've known a few demolition contractors and it's not as glamorous as it looks. In fact, it's actually a very dirty and boring job that most people would want..
I have always known how complicated it is to do this but that really showed the mechanics of it. Will help other people see that these are really the best way to safely bring a building down.
Been enjoying these videos. I’m learning a few things from them. Thank you for sharing them. Professionals at there best. Stay safe and may all your jobs be safe. God bless
hmmm interesting.. I was looking for footage on the collapse that happened a few days ago in Miami and this came up..
It's in the same area
Me too! I actually found this companies videos after watching other videos of the other day -the building that “fell down”. I slowed down one of the videos frame by frame and found this company name stamped in the corner really quickly on a frame! So I looked them up and this was linked to on their website. I found many interesting things when video was slowed down..
8:10 "How did they build this here? Is this code?"
I was looking for footage but now I have an addiction to watching demolition videos 😂
@@Profphizx I heard that too!!
this guy is the best of the best he knows his stuff when it comes to explosives and controlled demolition guess he is a master at his craft
There always has to be some last minute drama, lol.
That slow motion capture was awesome though. The amount of planning and work that goes into this is quite insane, wow!
Truly amazing - great expertise. This man, Mark, knows his stuff!! Great admiration for you and your company.
I WORKED IN THE COFFEE SHOP IN 1982.....
9601 COLLINS AVE. ACROSS FROM THE SHOPS AT BALL HARBOR MALL....
GREAT HOTEL, GREAT TIMES.......
I love the shots of the collapsing building on/in the building as it falls
Yes it's pretty heckin cool
I see it as very sad, but I greatly admire the engineering skill involved.
It’s amazing how much effort goes into making these building fall straight down into their footprint. It reinforces my suspicion that buildings don’t collapse that way on their own.
?
pure craftsmanship. awesome.
I’m pretty sure it’s the opposite of crafting something ??? xD
Sad to see the demolition of once wonderful historic building, but leaving an eyesore up is wrong. Well done again.
A gift to Europe, why people like me who enjoy visiting beautiful old cities with great buildings in human scale fly to europe to do so. That's billions upon billions spent every year.
Now it’s an even bigger and better hotel
@@QuarioQuario54321 I wouldn't be so sure...In a society where such masterpieces are knocked down, and where there are condos that collapse for no reason there is something wrong...!
been watching CDI demolitions since the Discovery Channel featured them back in the mid 90s. Still amazed at how they, as accurate as possible, do their job.
That was entertaining. I watched the whole thing.
It was very well made
I love watching these kind of documentaries
It is better to have the building come down in one time instead of a wrecking crew taking months to do the same job. Great job guys.
Yes, but ppl died, and they could have let them know. Referring to the building that just fell, and they claim it collapsed on its own. Killed over 100 ppl.
Wow THAT was awesome to watch ‼️who knew that this kinda thing would peak My interest . I'M JUST loving this 💗 I could watch implosions everyday.🙋🏽💯💯💯💯👍🏽.❤️
Who’s here after the miami disaster?
Me. Seems so sad to demolish great built buildings like this when the one that should have been demolished wasn't
Building Implosions are just a work of art...
That is an incredible thing to do, love it from Baltimore
Impressive example of engineering, geometry, and gravity.
They only needed to place the explosives on the beams and the corners..
Brilliant job guys 👍👍
For those who read through the comments, there is a brief discussion of a casualty. In 1997, in Canberra, AU, there was a controlled demolition of an old hospital. 100,000 people had gathered to witness the event. Nine people were injured and a 12 year old girl was killed instantly when steel shrapnel flew 430 meters from the demolition site. CDI was NOT the demolition contractor.
Great job. Behind every success is a lot of good planning.
Nothing built since the mid 50's to 60's is anything to cry over. But the wealth of classic redeemable structures that have been razed to be replaced by this kind of junk is tragic. Glad to watch it come down.
That building looks mid sixties to me.
@@robertwoodpa6463 : yeah probably, on the cutting edge of non-descript.
Have no noticed how calm and professional they all are, not silly tantrums for the camera unlike some motor programs.
At first i was like, 50 minutes long..!!! Then I watched the whole thing and will watch some more.
thing were made good back then, all with real strong steel, the florida Miami condo that fell the other day , was just a demolishen job with a tragic story!
... but also the demo guy asked how it was built this way and whether it was up to code and Mr. White shirt said "I'd hate to sit here and comment on that.."
@@tierneyk88 he just wanted to sound important. It was built in 55-56 of course it wasn’t up to the modern code. Shame a historical building is destroyed by soulless developers
That building went beautifully
this gives a really good and educational look at how they brought down the Surfside Condo building. Such a sad situation in Florida.
RUclips: "surfside condo collapse, watch this next"
Seriously RUclips, fix your recommendations
I have no idea that Sheraton is gone . I got married there 32 years ago . It was a beautiful property
Things come and go so fast. Especially in the States. Seems cheaper to demolish than to renovate

This was the Americana!!!!

Lapidus is now being recognized for his unique Miami style. People one day will shake their heads and wonder what they were thinking when the tore this down.
What do the neighbours want? A derelict building steadily reducing the value of their properties or a nice view from their balconies. The implosion option was the best one. It was either that or months of noisy, dusty demolition.
well there's always the option of refurbishing and restoring.
@@watchgoose That's just not true. Some buildings simply cannot be restored.
@@MissLexiMarie You are both correct. Yes, you could restore just about anything, but sometimes, it's just not economically viable. When Seattle tore down the Kingdome, we (as King County taxpayers), owed more on it than we paid to build it (partly due to the roof issues). We could have renovated it to work well as a football only stadium, but it was cheaper to just call demolish it and build what is now Centurylink Field. I was about 6 years old at the time, so I don't remember the exact details, but I've heard that we looked at all possible options and decided that implosion was that safest and cheapest demo method, not to mention quickest.
@Anthony Ellis
What the neighbours want is to complain.
Knock it down and they'd complain, but leave it up and they'd also complain.
They could have brought in a couple of thousand low paid (immigrant?) workers to take it down piece by piece...but the neighbours would complain.
Always a "Karen" to hold up productivity
Those are some very very smart people.
This was the best of these type videos I have seen, by far. Thanks.
When the old legends die the building comes down too.
Expert job beautifully synchronised to blow the whole precinct .. Good basic planning and everyone is a hit.Brains and Explosives at work. Good jobs.🏆💥
Give the nearby residents two choices. Let us either proceed with the implosion and get this over with as expediently as possible, or we will be using heavy equipment at night when it is cooler for our workers and will then be building Miami's first motorcross track.
Damn right
markenda1 people are ridiculous. Their condos will be worth so much more after this property is rebuilt!
@@vickyburton2434 And there will be more people and traffic in the neighborhood.
@@vickyburton2434 The stock market's getting ready to crash and another 2008 real estate melt down is just around the corner. No need to build even more condos that will lose value.

I'm so happy and proud of what you and your family do mark keep up the great work much love to you and your family and I love your shows ok
This is an incredibly interesting job!
I've known a few demolition contractors and it's actually a very dirty and boring job. Interesting to watch, but most people wouldn't really like doing it for a living.
@@kansasthunderman1 I'd would give everything to try this job for a while. If your family asks what my job is, I could say: Blowing up buildings.
This is Fascinating! The Discovery Channel always shows this stuff-along with the prep work, but not the Engineering involved. I always wondered what keeps the upper part of the blown column from just settling on the lower part, and why the rebar doesn't keep the concrete columns together. They explained that the rebar is supposed to flex. They also told what floors,, and how many, they need to place explosives on...
We ALL now know Too Much!
The Loizeaux family is absolute royalty in the demolition business.
Thanks for sharing this video!
Big kids play with big toys😎
This would be such a fun job!!
Amazing video. What hard dangerous work and but seemed safety conscious.
Thanks to this video. Trade Tower collapse is now clearly understandable.
Excellent video! Well explained, etc.
VERRY WELL EXECUTED TO PERFECTION.
Flipping cool
19 seconds and a dust cloud or? months and months of dismembering and loud construction work. One day of rain and the dust is gone
WTC only took 11 seconds and it was 16 times as tall

These guys and gals are GOOD! Nuff said....
Oh no, poor fancy condo owners/residents. You can't stop progress just cuz you don't want some dusty windows. I'm pretty sure the demolition company could arrange to have them washed for your precious little selves.
I am impressed. Great work. If you just look at the end you would think it was easy.
Legend has it that if you wait long enough these buildings self destruct.
RIP all who went to sleep that night and never woke up. God works in mysterious ways ...

Good
I’m here after seeing the video of the Champlain Tower Collapsing like a pancake . Anyone else? . I don’t understand how Champlain Tower just fall and collapse on its own without any types of explosions 🤔 I can’t wrap my mind around it ....how did it fall on its own🤔
Broken water pipes, water puddling where it shouldn't have been. The walls in the underground parking buckling under where the pool was. The pool didn't budge, the hot tub not so lucky. Shoddy inspections, not reporting things they found that were aiming for serious problems. Just before the building collapsed some people outside shot videos of broken pipes pouring water into the garage and all the getting drowned. Then BANG, half the building is gone.
@@annettedeem5252 no need to explain, some people just believe all buildings are indestructible by anything except by controlled demolition
Severe water damage. There were puddles of water all around on the ground of the under ground parking garage, that should NEVER have been there. An inspector who was there to inspect something else found deeper water where he was inspecting other things. He shrugged it off because he felt it wasn't his problem and never said a word to anybody. Where all the water was the walls up high were buckling. The water was coming from leaking pipes under the pool platform. Which leaked its way down into the garage and into the walls rusting the rebar and everything else that was in the walls. Just before the building collapsed some people were taking videos with their phones when water was pouring down out of the garage ceilings, under the first floor condos. It had been doing this for a long time and the building was damaged so bad it just came tumbling down. If the inspector who came to inspect something else had immediately notified somebody about what he found the residents could have gotten out quickly and safely. He found that deeper water two weeks before it fell. Imagine how many residents would still be alive if he had said something. I couldn't imagine carrying the boat load of guilt for the rest of my life.
learning that so much go into demolitions////////one time we stood 1 block away,NEVER AGAIN
just a bit of fence damaged not good in the safety terms but from a job point of view dam good job guys
The owner's daughter was beaned in the head by a pice of flying concrete. You can hear the sirens in the background when he talks about the damaged fence. Some kinda guy he is. Acting for the camera when his daughter is lying there half dead.
Thankyou'smuch
40 minutes longer than it needed to be.
The same i was looking for more on the Building that collapsed and this came up and i am sure i saw the building that went down recently in Florida.
Helen Garsed, on this video, it looks like the building tower that recently collapsed is probably at 0.42 sec. and at 1.17 min., approximately, for about 2 seconds, each. You would have to quickly stop the video at these times, but I believe these are that building.
2:22 5.5 meters from an adjecent high rise? Feet to meter conversion error or is there a building the camera is not showing us?
The residents around these 2 buildings need to keep their mouth's shut & stop complaining the residents don't know how dangerous these 2 buildings are if they don't tear the 2 buildings down.
I give you a destroyer gold medal 🥇 from Cambodia 🇰🇭
Mr mark, your some man God Bless you and wife always. 🙏🇮🇪🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
Good job bro
Fire in the hole. When you reach for the Preparation H and get the Ben Gay by mistake.
Every apartment complex one day will end like this and New designs and technology change the land scape for more modern buildings
Awesome!
What a mean, thankless job these destroyers have! Architects, builders leave behind a memory in the form of good, interesting structures, and these only know how to destroy for the sake of the bourgeoisie. The building being destroyed is the most interesting in appearance among the others.
Whoa. Just incredible
CDI IS THE BEST OF THE BEST I WATCH THEM TAKE DOWN THE i-90 BRIDGE IN CLEVELAND OHIO
Also, I do love the engineering cat and mouse game. On one side are civil engineers designing buildings that resist being destroyed, and CDI trying to do just that, with as little collateral damage as possible.
When I was in the Navy a radio tower in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico was blown down. It was about 1200 ft. A wind storm had come in during the night. The antenna snapped about half way up and tore out the support cables. Naval and other traffic had to be rerouted around us. It came out well considering that it didn't have the planning of a company like CDI.
This could have just a 15 minute show!
I wish a video would appear showing them preparing the un-collapsed part of Champlain Towers south for demolition. That's what i want to see.. 👀
You think the lizard people did it?
Clever stuff.
👏👏👏👏👏
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Very very good job
I guess they don't build em like they used to. Look at the size of those columns and of the rebar. Some buildings take all this work to bring down, others implode with no work at all, at just a nudge
They had a job and did the job well done
7:12 how can he hold on to that cigarette while running that huge beast?
If you ask me - Those dinamite professionals gave it all they got simply proves that it was a shame to knock down that building.
The Champlain Tower should have been built like this hotel. This thing is hard to bring down. Very well built.
This did not age well : /
Intense!
