Thanks for the RUclips shoutout MG! Since my last name is Smith and education is the role required, I named my book Locksmith Music Theory to UNLOCK the inner composer of the reader.
Loney Smith is my late dad and he is included in the title since it was his approach to his off the charts mechanical skills and hand-eye coordination that eventually opened my mind to receive the right analogy.
If he didn't get a physical sizing or space right the first time, he knew how to close the gap super quickly. I always thought it was magic:) Thanks again to you and CMP!

I think that maybe some of us aren't hearing the advice you guys are giving on how producers get down because it's a shock in a few ways. Firstly, we're emulating producers who aren't doing what we thought they were doing, and two, in order to advance it generally requires turning off the laptop and getting out there more. Online is an institution itself, and for a long time I fooled myself into thinking that I can insulate myself and continue to master my craft until one day I'm ready and something happens lol. Just sell my beats online, make my beats at home, and move on. Who needs the fame if I can get the fortune right?
However, most of these guys who are on, got on from knowing the right people and or networking. Old school ways are still around fuck what you heard. From busting their ass OUTSIDE of just music production a lot of those men are in better positions than those beatmakers who just spam instagram. They're doing it the old way, meeting people, showing their work, and working for free. For the rest of our community who does this as a hobby and want to sell beats on beatstars that's cool and all, but for those who really want something sustainable we need to get out more to eat. Do the music, and do the scene. Prop up and get in the ear of certain people. Meet others. Build a team. Earn a name. Use online as a tool and not as just the means itself. You need a page, you need online presence, but that's not going to be enough if you want to be big. Make videos, spread the word, do what it takes to show people that you believe in you and your product. That's almost half the battle in itself. There's more to it I know, but I'm just trying to get a grip with everything to be real. I ain't got all the answers, Sway!
The first part that we are having trouble with, however, is wild in itself since it says that producers are just sprinkling a little bit of spice over someone else's meal. Or vice versa. It's not what we've been picturing about our heroes and it's not what we've been telling ourselves for most of our lives. Even if we have read that a lot of our "super producer" favorites were composed of teams it's like we didn't get the message. They were made up of teams that had a room full of workers and others trying to help the squad, so they can later get on. It typically wasn't just one man making all the beats. Even guys like Large Pro and Q tip worked with each other, or different up and comers who were there to help, bounce ideas off them, or just plain donate. Dre always had help, Neptunes started out helping others, then worked as a team, Timbo started in the Basement and such until he got on and built his own team, etc. I heard Kanye worked with Premier, shit that you wouldn't know unless you dug deep. Big Name Producers today are using the same tenants, only difference is they use internet to swipe their melodies and doing the rest on their DAW or work station. Reheating some ready rock, pre-cooked up songs and living up to their names as a "Producer" and less of the composer or beat maker. The official definition of a "Music Producer" aka the man with the connects who puts the song together, was how it's always been before Hip Hop was ever spun on a turn table.

Same thing for singers. Vocals need room, these beats out here with like 5 hihat loops, claps everywhere, 3 diff snares, and bass, kick and 2 808s...like where is the vocal going to sit? Lol.
Good point on the b-sides from singles/tapes from the 90s, those instrumentals (and the "producer ABC mix" versions) were flames...

I use Arturia & it's Dope. I've used many of the Vintage keyboards and it's Spot On.
I think It's not just sample packs or sites, it is also they are copying the same RUclips videos, and then where did the RUclips creator get it from? Massive Snow effect. We are in a time full of sheep and not many wolves.
I was just thinking about the so called "RUclips producers" who never show their screen when making beats in their DAW.. who don't really make their own beats on the spot or PERIOD. like they taught you in.. SHOW YOUR WORK 👌🏽
