    She is a true alto, effortless and melodic. Tragic story. Such an incredible talent. I loved the carpenters when I was a kid.

    the layering of their vocals is called over-dubbing, just like you said - recording their vocals over each other multiple times, and brilliant results!!!!!

    Karen is the voice. Clearest of all. Im on my late 60s, so remember Carpenters very well on the radio and TV specials. 5'3 KC had a haunting timber in all her songs. Did you know every female harmony in all of her songs was hers as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard ? She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard, her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's voice was discovered by Herb Alpert, A&M Records, in 1969, which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best, beautiful, female voice ever. She had quite a voice range. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with haunting, mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she/they received 4 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. Check other songs such as 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hideaway', 'Rainy Days and Mondays',' 'This Masquerade', 'I Can Dream Cant I'(a big band era song), 'Hurting Each Other', 'All You Get From Love Is A Love Song', 'A Song For You' ,'Superstar', ' I Need To Be In Love', 'We've Only Just Begun',' Goodbye To Love', etc.. She had a few friends including Petula Clark, Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick. She had anorexia with a serious onset in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Married a guy in 1982 that was broke, didn't tell her he had a vasectomy, and mistreated her. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. Her solo album was released some years after her death. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday"]

    OK man, you did Karen good. Thank you. I wasn't her friend or a family member, I was simply a fan. I was 27 when she died. And like many other fans, I feel a strange..., brother vibe? Like I want to protect her. At least what's left, her memory. Sure she doesn't need my help but hey, feeling. It is what it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Early career Carpenters particularly featured that marvelous multitracked harmony (inspired by Les Paul and Mary Ford circa 1950, BTW). It's heard most vividly on the 1970 Close To You album. But Richard never dropped the idea, even after Karen's tragic passing. Check out When Time Was All We Had, from Richard's 1987 solo album Time. You'll love that. Nice work on the a cappella cover of Close To You, too.

    Richard has stated numerous times he loves the maj7… I obsessively try to transcribe their songs to finger style guitar arrangements .. the vocal melody lines are enchanting and complex
    The chord progressions are more complex than people give credit for .. pop music today is all 1645…. Here you see diminished and augmented and chromatic movements and passing tones used in almost every song

    • @JelaniStokes
      @JelaniStokes  2 года назад +1

      Yeah and I think this is why I was drawn to this song. I love songwriters who love to use extentions and creative chord progressions. Like for me, one of my recent favorite chords to incorporate is a bVIadd9 (flat major 6 with add 9). I love how it comes out of nowhere but still fits perfectly (when used correctly) within the progressions.

    Thx! Yes their harmonies are spot on, and the arrangement is top shelf, but it’s also technically advanced with the layered voices! There’s something about family harmonies that are different. Perhaps it’s genetics and a history of singing together. A great example is The Everly Brothers! Or The Jackson 5! Definitely The Carpenters!

    Beautiful, great voice, plays drum at the same time! Yet somehow she hated herself enough to starve herself to death. Wonder what her babies could have become. Shame.
    Btw. Nice discussion.
