There is a chance in the near future if the situation in Russia continues as it is currently. They were both kept in place by Putin, but all are mortals. If Russia can hold itself together there is no chance of independence.
Just wrote a paper last week analyzing the novel Hadji Murad for what it can tell us about the Russian war against the Murids. This video is incredibly well researched. The way you put together this complex and nuanced history is nothing short of amazing. You fit all the pieces together in just the right way to give a detailed overview of the conflict that is both easy to follow and concise. During the American Civil War, Walt Whitman wrote, “The real war will never get in the books,” One such episode was the Sunni Awakening a decade ago, which began as an initiative of Captain Travis Patriquin and the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Ramadi, commanded by Colonel Sean MacFarland. In Ramadi in late 2006, at a crucial juncture in the war, Captain Patriquin and Colonel MacFarland reached out to Sheikh Sattar of the Abu Risha tribe and figured out how to make him an ally in the war against the Al Qaeda insurgency in Iraq.[2] Their actions changed the terms of the fight and started to turn the tide against the insurgency. The ensuing Awakening that turned the Sunni tribes of Iraq against Al Qaeda, along with a new counterinsurgency strategy and the surge of additional U.S. forces, dealt a severe blow to Al Qaeda in Iraq that created a window of hope that a stabilized Iraq would be possible. Qaeda assassinated Sheikh Sattar in September 2007, robbing the Sunni Awakening of its charismatic leader The Maliki government’s sectarianism and rejection of the Sunni Awakening would open the door for the rise of the Islamic State and its conquest of most of the predominantly Sunni Arab areas of Iraq in 2014.[3]

Hardest part about making these vids is getting the balance right between detail and "drama" (making it entertaining enough) - this requires me to very selective with what info I put in; and that creates its own headache cuz I can't really fail to miss out important details but I also can't put everything in! The Apache still lost their land like so many tribes before them. Hell, a lot of the natives in general literally lost their language since they had multiple languages forced upon them. At least some like the Irish still have a chance to revive theirs
@@elseggs6504 they all lost their land they all lost languages and then got it all back it's the ebb and flow of time. My point is that these peoples aren't worth conquering because eventually they'll rise up again and regain what was lost then some other group will come and try to do it all over again and lose thousands doing it. It's a cycle on repeat the only thing that changes is the invader who eventually leaves because it's to expensive or bloody to continue the struggle. In a perfect world you'd leave these people alone on their Mountains in their Glens and their Jungles. Incidentally in the Apaches case this is exactly what the US government did they gave the tribes autonomy on their reservations it wasn't perfect but eventually it worked as no native American war party has gone on a rampage since the 1920s and most tribes are racking in the denero threw casinos ownership.

Alsaice Lorraine, known for having lots of germans, never seperated from France and in fact felt more comfortable with them than the Prussians. When I was young I read Anna Politkovskaya : A Dirty War and wrote a report for school. Idkw but I have always been very interested in Chechnya. It's a sad story. I wish I knew more about their pre Islamic history. I am really enjoying this channel, thanks for the uploads.
It is strange how some of the most beautiful places in the world are the most troubled. Those green valleys look like top mountian biking country or motorcycle country to me. I hope this region finds peace and can open itself up to that sort of tourism, for everyone's mutual gain.

Which is that Kadyrov wants to act like chechens & russians have had good relationships despite the wars - which thankfully is true at least to a certain extent - but he wants people to focus only on the good parts of their history & forget the ugly parts of it. The ugly parts dejustify his collaboration with the russians. For Dagestanis it's similar, except they don't risk as much as chechens (thank god) when they talk about these things.
I'm glad to hear you mention that the Imams were not typical Naqshbandis. Bcs russians & the Naqshbandis of today like to argue for themselves that they were in an attempt to gain more prestige, while at the same time criticizing the Imamat for fighting russia. The Naqshbandis often even cooporated with russians when there was fighting going on. Imam Mansur had to fight with that problem.
Yes you are right. Imam Shamil's teacher Said Harakani (Саид Араканский), a Naqshbandi sheikh, was secretly meeting Yermolov and collaborating with Russians.

Inaccurate on Avar khaganat part. They didn’t rule over all the avar villages , in the ancient times maybe , but not in this period. Agars often didn’t acknowledge them and created Free communities, where lived by their own laws and no one touched them. All three Imams were Avar. Also, Dagestan as a whole was never part of Persia , maybe Lezgistan , but definitely not the other parts. There is zero traces of any kind of influence in Avar , Lak, Dargin etc. Ethnicities of any kind of Persian influence.

Hello..Thanks for making a video about the Caucuses and Chechen liberation movement which starts in Chechnya about 400 years ago..and while i commend you for your efforts..I do have some issues with your video that you fail to mention..and that's about the great figure "Imam Mansour"who was a foundational and integral part of the Caucasian liberation movement for freedom..and any mention of Caucasian history is seriously deficient without him being mentioned.. I urge you to make a video of this figure and his fundamental principles in the resistance of the russian invasions of the caucuses. "Imam Mansuor" or Ushurma [his chechen name] was born in 1732 OR 1759 [historian different opinions ] in a chechen village called Aldy.. 'Indeed,for Chechens Imam Mansur is the forefather and pre-founder both of the main ideas of the [Chechen] National Liberation Movement and of the aspiration for a political unification of the North Caucasian people, He is also regarded as the initiator of the Chechens long National-Liberation struggle which is still being waged. [ The Lone Wolf and The Bear: Three Centuries of Chechen Defiance of Russia Rule, Moshe Gammer, Pg. 27 ] ' Mansur, it seems was the first to realise that on their own the different mountain communities would have no chance of resisting a great power such as russia. Hence his grand strategy (adopted and developed by later leaders of resistance) of following two separate but parallel paths: one, to unite all the mountaineers (and also the steppe nomads) in armed resistance to russia, and two to obtain ottoman assistance'. [ The Lone Wolf and the Bear Pg. 28 ] All Caucasians followed Imam Mansur from Chechens, Dagistanis, Circassians..etc. He defeated the russian military many times, one of his famed battles was the battle of Sunzha in 1785 which shocked the russian empire. He lead Chechens and Dagistanis and defeated russians in Kislyar. He lead armies in Kabardina and Circassians in Anapa. Finally after years of fighting unequal battles outnumbered many times, russians shot a Canon close to him which caused him to fall unconscious and was captured, and imprisoned for the rest of his life and died in the prison.

@Hikma History: Thank you for an interesting video, as always. I am assuming you are based in Turkey. I wonder if you can find info about an Afghan named Charkhi څرخي. Forgive me, I have forgotten his first name. He seemed to have gained the title of Pasha with Ottomans, was appointed governor of Daghestan. The word “Pacha” in Afghanistan means King, so the rumors started in Afghanistan that he had become king of Daghestan. Many Afghans joined him. He will be continuously attacking Iran, till Nadir Afshar defeated him. He and his Afghans then hid in Caucasus mountains, and was a thorn to the Iranians, attacking them continuously. I first heard of him in a piece Farsi poetry handwritten on first page of a dictionary given to my father by an Afghan scholar. The poetry complains of Charkhis cruelties ظلم on Iranians.

Dagestani here. The person you described did exist during same time, except he was not Afghani. From what you described here I assume the story is about Surkhay (Dagestan version of name Sergei), Khan of Gazikumukh. His ethnicity is actually Lak (one of the local ethnicities). He ruled over Laks, Avars, and partially Dargins and Kumyks. Ottoman empire didn't appoint him, but recognized him as a Pasha of Dagestan just to get some influence in the area and gain ally against the raising power of Nader Shah. In reality it didn't really mean anything as he was already the most powerful ruler in Dagestan at that point of time. Same as if the pope called Biden the ruler of USA today. The invasion of Nader Shah into Dagestan in fact was caused by constant raids of Surkhay into persian controlled Azerbaijan, and he was eventually defeated and captured when capital city Gazikumukh failed. The Nader Shahs victory though was not conclusive and the retreating army of his sons united with Avars and Dargins later gave another battle defeating the army of Nader which pushed him outside of Dagestan once again. Though there might have been some afghan fighters in his army during that period, but probably not many. The only connection with afghan people I can find is that his son Muhammad who inherited the kingdom, had afghan wife, daughter of one of the Persian generals, who I guess was highly respected.

Imperial Russian army forced to emigrate muslim Ossetians . Russia did not immigrate the Christian Ossetians and saw them as an ally in the region for religious reasons. Today, Ossetians seem to be allies of Russia, but Ossetians in Turkey are distant from Russia because of genocide

I found another mistake. In the video it says that the start of resistance and first imam was Gazi Muhammad. It wasn't. First movement was from Chechnya and the first imam was Shaikh Mansur - declared as an imam of whole Caucasus. Gazi Muhammad was second imam of Caucasus. Not the first. Correct this! It insults our memory! I'm going to watch further to see if there are more mistakes...

Sheikh Mansur was the first imam of the caucasus also uniting circassians into his army. Sheikh Shamils Army at a point consisted of a majority of chechens and cowardly betraying them at the end. I can‘t kinda blame you for your mistakes since for outsiders of the Caucasus it’s hard to get information about us and a lot of knowledge was destroyed for example through Stalin too and it is harder for outsiders to get knowledge but we did a good job to still keeping a lot of important knowledge and a good portion of is not accessible for outsiders. But you as a (true) muslim brother shouldn’t spread false informations about our own culture and history.
@@maxmusterov2870 Sheikh Mansur led a rebellion against the Russians which was damn near identical in nature to Imam Ghazi & Shamil's one but the Caucasian Imamate was an actual state that was formed in in 1828. Sheikh Mansur did NOT establish the Imamate, he led a rebellion but no exact state was established! I am aware that I could be wrong but I did put a great deal of effort into researching this topic and nowhere in my reading did it even hint that Sheikh Mansur established the Imamate. He died in 1794 and the Imamate was established in 1828. I don't really understand why there is confusion here!

Chechens appeared in the Caucasus only 250 years ago in the form of a Russian project to divide the world's oldest Ingush (or Ghalghay) people into parts. Thus, Chehen is a baby tribe compared to other nations. The formation of the Chechen tribes took place in 3 stages: 1) Migration in the 16th century of some Ingush (or Ghalghay) teips to the East, where they began to be called Loamaroy or Tavlintsy in Kumyk. This place is called Ichkeria in Turkic (Vedenskaya and Nozhai-Yurt regions of modern Chechnya). 2) The migration of the Avars to the West in the 17th century and the foundation by the Avar Khan Turlov of the village of Chechen-aul (Chachan) - the capital of his Avar Khanate - south of modern Grozny. The settlement of the region by Cossacks, Kumyks, mountain Jews (tats) Avars, deserted Russian soldiers, Nogais, Georgians, Circassians. They began to be called Chachans. 3) Descent from the mountains of the Ingush-Loamara (Tavlintsy) and their mixing with the Chachans of the plane. At the same time, fugitives and criminals from all over the world are being accepted into the Chachan society following Chechen custom of “Stubina vosh”, including Russians and Cossacks, who get chechenized over time. As a result, today we have modern Chechens. Next comes the chechenization of these peoples, largely due to the promiscuity of tsarist officials and generals, who called everyone by this name indiscriminately for their own convenience. The fact is that the name "Ingush" in the 18th century has not yet taken root, and the name "G1alg1ay" is difficult to pronounce in Russian and European languages. The word "Chechen" is easy to pronounce. For this banal reason, the Russians began to call the Ingush (or Ghalghay) as Chechens. And as you know from the fable about the lion, if you call a lion a donkey for a long time, then he will eventually start sounding like a donkey. This apparently happened to the Ingush (or Ghalghay) living in Ichkeria and on the territory of modern Achkhoi-Martan, Urus-Martan, Nadterechny, Itum-Kalinsky, Shatoisky, Sharoisky, Galay-Chozhsky and Grozny regions, which are the national territories of the Ingush (or Ghalghay). One thing I noticed is Afghans, Dagestanis, Chechens have very strong noses (Sometimes big too). A sharp strong nose does have a role to play on what kind of a person it might be.

The fact that the ethnic groups in Caucasus formed a united front against the Russian Empire made me question one thing: Why the Central Asian Khanates did not form a united front and alliances with the Afghans and the British Raj of India to fight off the Russian Empire?
Because they were in an area far too sparsely populated. By the time negotiations would have started with the Afghans, the Russians would have made gains that would have made the negotiations invalid. In addition, the Central Asia area is largely flat and doesn't provide a natural battlefield that advantages the defenders. In short, they were handicapped by the area they wanted to defend.
The Brits wanted to conquer them too and add them to their Raj. Afghanistan was invaded by the Brits long before Russia. All of it was part of their Great Game. Not just for Russia to get closer to India but for the both of them to make Persia their bitch.
Central Asia is less populated. And they have been fighting each other since ancient times. The people of the Caucasus were isolated between the tribes because of the geography of the mountains, thus maintaining little contact with each other until Tsarist Russia came.
Unfortunately there was no united front. Many Caucasians fought against their brethren during those wars. Russia implemented "divide and conquer" strategy very effectively

It’s a misconception unfortunately. Chechens and Dagestanis like the Avars are the very natives of the Caucasus and one of the oldest nations like the georgians who are also the natives of the caucasus.
There is a false legend that people tend to believe that because Chamil was Dagestani, the Dagestani fought fiercely against the Russians, but this is not true, as for the Ossetians, they were the best allies of the Russians (especially to get more territories). The Chechens fought the Russians long before and after Chamil betrayed the Chechens They were inflicting monumental defeats on the Russians in a position of overwhelming inferiority long before Shamil and even when Shamil joined them after being driven out by his own people in Dagestan, Shamil's main forces were not the Dagestani but 90% of the Chechens and the rest were not even Avars, they were Lezgins and Koumyks who unlike the rest of the Dagestani people fought against the Russians The Chechen people (Vaynax, which means "our people" -> Chechen and Ingush) were united but divided into clans, that's why their distribution on all maps is distorted. They lived on territories known today from Dagestan to the Caspian Sea, where there is even an island called the Chechen Island. Today, Chechens live on only 50% of the territory where they used to live, because their territory was ceded to the Dagestanis, who were the allies of the Russians from the beginning to the end (the same is true for the Ingush, whose 50% of the ancestral territory is held by the Ossetians). The Chechens are the most courageous people in the history of mankind. They are the only people, with a numerical disadvantage of 1 per 1000, who defeated not one, not two, but three monumental invasions of the Mongols (even though it cost them dearly), while only one of these invasions destroyed entire empires. Tamerlane had to unite with other Mongol hordes (with whom he was at war) who had threatened the kingdom of Simsir in order to defeat the Chechens after very costly defeats after the Mongol invasions. During the Bolshevik revolution, they crushed the White Army and the Red Army one after the other. They repelled and crushed the German invasion of the Caucasus during the Second World War. Only a small division of Ingush-Chechen soldiers managed to stop the advance of the German offensive towards Stalingrad for two weeks during the Second World War, which allowed the Russians to fortify the city of Stalingrad.

My point is that these peoples aren't worth conquering because eventually they'll rise up again and regain what was lost then some other group will come and try to do it all over again and lose thousands doing it. In a perfect world you'd leave these people alone on their Mountains in their Glens and their Jungles.
Incidentally in the Apaches case this is exactly what the US government did they gave the tribes autonomy on their reservations it wasn't perfect but eventually it worked as no native American war party has gone on a rampage since the 1920s and most tribes are racking in the denero threw casinos ownership.

Inaccurate on Avar khaganat part. They didn’t rule over all the avar villages , in the ancient times maybe , but not in this period. Agars often didn’t acknowledge them and created Free communities, where lived by their own laws and no one touched them. All three Imams were Avar. Also, Dagestan as a whole was never part of Persia , maybe Lezgistan , but definitely not the other parts. There is zero traces of any kind of influence in Avar , Lak, Dargin etc. Ethnicities of any kind of Persian influence.

All Caucasians followed Imam Mansur from Chechens, Dagistanis, Circassians..etc. He defeated the russian military many times, one of his famed battles was the battle of Sunzha in 1785 which shocked the russian empire. He lead Chechens and Dagistanis and defeated russians in Kislyar.
He lead armies in Kabardina and Circassians in Anapa.
Finally after years of fighting unequal battles outnumbered many times, russians shot a Canon close to him which caused him to fall unconscious and was captured, and imprisoned for the rest of his life and died in the prison.

In Ramadi in late 2006, at a crucial juncture in the war, Captain Patriquin and Colonel MacFarland reached out to Sheikh Sattar of the Abu Risha tribe and figured out how to make him an ally in the war against the Al Qaeda insurgency in Iraq.[2] Their actions changed the terms of the fight and started to turn the tide against the insurgency. The ensuing Awakening that turned the Sunni tribes of Iraq against Al Qaeda, along with a new counterinsurgency strategy and the surge of additional U.S. forces, dealt a severe blow to Al Qaeda in Iraq that created a window of hope that a stabilized Iraq would be possible.

@Hikma History: Thank you for an interesting video, as always. I am assuming you are based in Turkey. I wonder if you can find info about an Afghan named Charkhi څرخي. Forgive me, I have forgotten his first name. He seemed to have gained the title of Pasha with Ottomans, was appointed governor of Daghestan. The word “Pacha” in Afghanistan means King, so the rumors started in Afghanistan that he had become king of Daghestan. Many Afghans joined him. He will be continuously attacking Iran, till Nadir Afshar defeated him. He and his Afghans then hid in Caucasus mountains, and was a thorn to the Iranians, attacking them continuously. I first heard of him in a piece Farsi poetry handwritten on first page of a dictionary given to my father by an Afghan scholar. The poetry complains of Charkhis cruelties ظلم on Iranians.

Dagestani here. The person you described did exist during same time, except he was not Afghani. From what you described here I assume the story is about Surkhay (Dagestan version of name Sergei), Khan of Gazikumukh. His ethnicity is actually Lak (one of the local ethnicities). He ruled over Laks, Avars, and partially Dargins and Kumyks.
Ottoman empire didn't appoint him, but recognized him as a Pasha of Dagestan just to get some influence in the area and gain ally against the raising power of Nader Shah. In reality it didn't really mean anything as he was already the most powerful ruler in Dagestan at that point of time. Same as if the pope called Biden the ruler of USA today.
The invasion of Nader Shah into Dagestan in fact was caused by constant raids of Surkhay into persian controlled Azerbaijan, and he was eventually defeated and captured when capital city Gazikumukh failed. The Nader Shahs victory though was not conclusive and the retreating army of his sons united with Avars and Dargins later gave another battle defeating the army of Nader which pushed him outside of Dagestan once again.
Though there might have been some afghan fighters in his army during that period, but probably not many. The only connection with afghan people I can find is that his son Muhammad who inherited the kingdom, had afghan wife, daughter of one of the Persian generals, who I guess was highly respected.

I found another mistake. In the video it says that the start of resistance and first imam was Gazi Muhammad. It wasn't. First movement was from Chechnya and the first imam was Shaikh Mansur - declared as an imam of whole Caucasus. Gazi Muhammad was second imam of Caucasus. Not the first. Correct this! It insults our memory!

Sheikh Mansur was the first imam of the caucasus also uniting circassians into his army. Sheikh Shamils Army at a point consisted of a majority of chechens and cowardly betraying them at the end. I can‘t kinda blame you for your mistakes since for outsiders of the Caucasus it’s hard to get information about us and a lot of knowledge was destroyed for example through Stalin too and it is harder for outsiders to get knowledge but we did a good job to still keeping a lot of important knowledge and a good portion of is not accessible for outsiders. @@maxmusterov2870 Sheikh Mansur led a rebellion against the Russians which was damn near identical in nature to Imam Ghazi & Shamil's one but the Caucasian Imamate was an actual state that was formed in in 1828. Sheikh Mansur did NOT establish the Imamate, he led a rebellion but no exact state was established! I am aware that I could be wrong but I did put a great deal of effort into researching this topic and nowhere in my reading did it even hint that Sheikh Mansur established the Imamate. He died in 1794 and the Imamate was established in 1828. I don't really understand why there is confusion here!

Chechens appeared in the Caucasus only 250 years ago in the form of a Russian project to divide the world's oldest Ingush (or Ghalghay) people into parts. Thus, Chehen is a baby tribe compared to other nations.
The formation of the Chechen tribes took place in 3 stages:
1) Migration in the 16th century of some Ingush (or Ghalghay) teips to the East, where they began to be called Loamaroy or Tavlintsy in Kumyk. This place is called Ichkeria in Turkic (Vedenskaya and Nozhai-Yurt regions of modern Chechnya).
2) The migration of the Avars to the West in the 17th century and the foundation by the Avar Khan Turlov of the village of Chechen-aul (Chachan) - the capital of his Avar Khanate - south of modern Grozny. The settlement of the region by Cossacks, Kumyks, mountain Jews (tats) Avars, deserted Russian soldiers, Nogais, Georgians, Circassians. They began to be called Chachans.
3) Descent from the mountains of the Ingush-Loamara (Tavlintsy) and their mixing with the Chachans of the plane. At the same time, fugitives and criminals from all over the world are being accepted into the Chachan society following Chechen custom of “Stubina vosh”, including Russians and Cossacks, who get chechenized over time. As a result, today we have modern Chechens.
Next comes the chechenization of these peoples, largely due to the promiscuity of tsarist officials and generals, who called everyone by this name indiscriminately for their own convenience. The fact is that the name "Ingush" in the 18th century has not yet taken root, and the name "G1alg1ay" is difficult to pronounce in Russian and European languages. The word "Chechen" is easy to pronounce. For this banal reason, the Russians began to call the Ingush (or Ghalghay) as Chechens. And as you know from the fable about the lion, if you call a lion a donkey for a long time, then he will eventually start sounding like a donkey. This apparently happened to the Ingush (or Ghalghay) living in Ichkeria and on the territory of modern Achkhoi-Martan, Urus-Martan, Nadterechny, Itum-Kalinsky, Shatoisky, Sharoisky, Galay-Chozhsky and Grozny regions, which are the national territories of the Ingush (or Ghalghay). One thing I noticed is Afghans, Dagestanis, Chechens have very strong noses (Sometimes big too). A sharp strong nose does have a role to play on what kind of a person it might be.

The fact that the ethnic groups in Caucasus formed a united front against the Russian Empire made me question one thing: Why the Central Asian Khanates did not form a united front and alliances with the Afghans and the British Raj of India to fight off the Russian Empire?

Because they were in an area far too sparsely populated. By the time negotiations would have started with the Afghans, the Russians would have made gains that would have made the negotiations invalid. In addition, the Central Asia area is largely flat and doesn't provide a natural battlefield that advantages the defenders. In short, they were handicapped by the area they wanted to defend.
The Brits wanted to conquer them too and add them to their Raj. Afghanistan was invaded by the Brits long before Russia.
All of it was part of their Great Game. Not just for Russia to get closer to India but for the both of them to make Persia their bitch.
Central Asia is less populated. And they have been fighting each other since ancient times. The people of the Caucasus were isolated between the tribes because of the geography of the mountains, thus maintaining little contact with each other until Tsarist Russia came.
Unfortunately there was no united front. Many Caucasians fought against their brethren during those wars. Russia implemented "divide and conquer" strategy very effectively

PERSIA was never a modern state that enforced centralization, their rule over most of Iran was rather soft, lax, and even tolerant of nomads. so many of modern conflicts in the region can be linked towards the Westphalian states' colonization of the world, which is something that russia was experiencing in the west, and had to enforce in the East too.

But it was not Russia alone that defeated Persia. The British invaded from the South and East. They divided what remained of Persia udner British and Russian influence. This is the same Persia that rivaled the Ottoman Empire.

There is a false legend that people tend to believe that because Chamil was Dagestani, the Dagestani fought fiercely against the Russians, but this is not true, as for the Ossetians, they were the best allies of the Russians (especially to get more territories).
The Chechens fought the Russians long before and after Chamil betrayed the Chechens
They were inflicting monumental defeats on the Russians in a position of overwhelming inferiority long before Shamil and even when Shamil joined them after being driven out by his own people in Dagestan, Shamil's main forces were not the Dagestani but 90% of the Chechens and the rest were not even Avars, they were Lezgins and Koumyks who unlike the rest of the Dagestani people fought against the Russians
The Chechen people (Vaynax, which means "our people" -> Chechen and Ingush) were united but divided into clans, that's why their distribution on all maps is distorted.
They lived on territories known today from Dagestan to the Caspian Sea, where there is even an island called the Chechen Island.
Today, Chechens live on only 50% of the territory where they used to live, because their territory was ceded to the Dagestanis, who were the allies of the Russians from the beginning to the end (the same is true for the Ingush, whose 50% of the ancestral territory is held by the Ossetians).
The Chechens are the most courageous people in the history of mankind.
They are the only people, with a numerical disadvantage of 1 per 1000, who defeated not one, not two, but three monumental invasions of the Mongols (even though it cost them dearly), while only one of these invasions destroyed entire empires.
