Oioi squelch squad! We really hope you enjoy this longer episode featuring some very juicy finds with pottery expert and Thames mudlarking legend: Richard Hemery! It’s our first ever collab and we had such a great time messing around together in the mud, picking up amazing pieces of history and learning from Richard. Big Apologies about some of the audio in the video, it was just suchhhh a windy day but we have done our best with overdubbing etc. Smash that like button if you enjoyed it and let us know what you thought! We will be meeting up with Richard again soon for a Mudlark on the Thames so stay tuned for that too! Thanks again everyone and thanks Richard for an awesome adventure. Make sure you check out Richard’s Instagram and RUclips site! Josie + Andy x
Don't worry about the audio... Those winds and lumps of mud make it hard for any kind of mic... The voice overs are well done and just watching you guys do your thing with so much joy makes you forget all about a few seconds of less audio. Great videos all the way and curious for the next one
Once again a top notch video! Richard provided a wealth of knowledge and such great finds. I tjink I had almost as much fun as you did. Thanks for another great adventure!
That was great, I loved it! Although am I losing that much hair on top? I didn't realise I was so honoured to be your first collaboration! Great edit, thanks, see you again soon!
@Richard Hemery love all your collabs : saw you with Nicola in the past and now you must be an honorary Mudpie with all that gooey mud covering you from head to toe! Loved the excitement in your voice as you saw each juicy find they brought you 😍 warmest regards from Washington state USA
Dear Richard, Don't worry about the hair loss. It's due to all the information you're stuffing in your brain. Room has to be created somehow, eh? LOL The joyous expression on your face makes you appear like a young boy in the muck.
Yayyy thanks guys! It was a bit of a nightmare to edit with all the wind but it was a fantastic adventure. Hahah it was so muddy in fact that the camera was completely covered and soaked! You should totally come down south this summer!!😍😃x
That has to be the biggest smile I have ever seen on anyone's face! Mr. Hemery was in pure 100% muddy heaven! What a great sport! Loved this video, you two are so much fun to watch!
Awh thanks Julianne! We all enjoyed this outing so much despite the crazy levels of mud haha..More next week and a Thames collab with Richard soon too!😀
You picked the best person for your first collab, I've got to say! I've been following Mr Hemery for quite a while and his pottery knowledge never ceases to amaze me. Well done, Mudpies, I thoroughly enjoy your videos!
Fantastic to see an expert such as Richard getting so excited with the finds, love the way you two are starting to fine tune the treasures you bring home. My favourite was the tamper
Thanks John! Yes it was really great to get validation from him on how remarkable it is the quantity and variety of all the Roman pottery gathered here. Just an Epic day! Pleased you enjoyed it 😀
I really enjoyed this and some superb finds. It also shows what a real sport Richard is after getting so muddy but still keeping a sense of humor and sharing his knowledge.
Yayyy love to hear it! Yes totally! He did not waiver once, despite the 6 miles or so in thick mud with multiple falls along the way lol 😂 kept us all going! Legend
Poor Richard, everytime we seen him the mud was creeping up him further. Loved that blue bottle . I could listen to richard and his knowledge all day. Hope he found some great finds.
Hahaha he fully champed it! Took on the mud like a boss and got some beautiful Roman pieces out of it. I must say, we are rather looking forward to a less muddy adventure with him on the Thames foreshore! What a change that will make😃😍
Sir Richard Hemery what a great addition to the fun in the mud. My faves are the blue glass jug and the green 3 piece glass bottle. Too bad we don't have a video of you all eating it in the mud. That would have been so fun...
Thank you, it really got very messy and undignified at one point! However no one lost their sense of humour, it was a lot of fun. Can't wait to meet up again 😄
How fun!!! First of all, please describe the "incident" that you all had in the mud!! It looked like Mr.Hemery rolled in it!😄 My absolute favorite find has to be the stunningly beautiful 💙blue bottle💙!! It's 92°F/33°C and I'm stuck inside because of my health. But your videos really are a genuine blessing to me! Thank you and happy mud hunting!!🤎😄
😂😂 we managed to all go down at one point where the mud was super thick! We became quadrupeds and crawled out on our hands and knees lol. It was quite a spectacular scene... awhh thanks for watching the videos we love sharing these adventures! More next week 😀😀 take care! X
These finds are amazing...bits of Roman history...just hard to realize. I had to take Latin and I was more fascinated by the pottery and jewelry of the Romans...I sailed back in time to Latin conjugation and also remembered my Latin project for a fair...nostalgia...oh my!!
Richard is amazing - a walking encyclopedia, and such a nice guy! And he coped SO well with becoming very much an honorary Mudpie! I think that might have been more mud than he'd come into contact with in those 15 years on the Thames combined, haha! Lovely finds as always - I love that bell inkwell especially. The shade of blue on that glass bottle is so pretty and so unusual. You really do have the coolest finds, always! Brilliant episode and looking forward to the next collab with Richard!
Couldn't agree more! He truly champed it and is totally a Mudpie at heart, he embraced that mud with open arms lol! what a legend. You're right, that bell inkwell is certainly something special and so pleased to add it to our collection. Thanks for watching Yvonne, we can't wait to bring you along to the Thames with Richard when we do meet up! 😃
Thanks Penny! It’s just remarkable how many sherds of Roman are sat out there in the mud! Leads me to think of the potentially complete pots that must be sat under the surface...😍 It was a joy to bring Richard along with us and we can’t wait to lark with him again! X
You guys just keep getting better with your knowledge and finds. That Richard is a treasure to have along. I think the ink wells were my favorite today. Keep up the good work!
What an interesting man Richard is, learnt a lot listening to him. You all found some lovely pieces . Well done to you all. Thanks for sharing. Loved the bell shaped bottle xxx
What an awesome day you three had! I loved seeing Richard with you. His face was really showing his enjoyment! 😊 I wish we had places to go mudlarking here in Western Oregon. We do go beachcombing on our beaches for agates and petrified wood, but ancient finds would be way more fun!
Thanks Sonny! Very pleased with the decorated piece... hopefully some more of that in the future! Richard has such an incredible knowledge base, it’s amazing listening to him... look forward to meeting with him again and sharing another video. Thanks for watching and happy hunting 😀🙌
Oh my 😲 It looks like the mud monster tried to swallow Richard whole! I'm glad you (and the treasure) survived! I LOVE the pale blue bottle 💙 beautiful!
Thanks Julie! Haha yes he was loving it! Soooo muddy but great fun finding juicy treasure. Thanks for watching and look forward to sharing next week's episode with you 😃
Wow what beautiful inkwells especially the bell. We so enjoyed learning so much from Richard about pottery.Amazing to think all that Roman pottery is.lying in the mud. Thank you so much.
Brilliant episode! I loved the medieval piece. That tiny green fragment has so much history. Richard coped well with the mud lol 😂 you all looked like you had a great day. Really enjoyed hearing about the history behind pieces. Stay safe and well in that mud x
*sorry about the wind* is something I also keep saying to my wife 😂. What a knowledgeable and nice guy Richard is, hope we see him again. Thanks Josie and Andy for another top adventure.
I love the way you use the wooden toolboxes in your kitchen. Fabulous idea…just beautiful? Great adventure. I would want to take all that pottery home with me.
Awh thanks Annette! Dad made those toolboxes from spare pieces of wood etc, think they’ve turned out lovely 😀 thanks for joining the adventure. Take care and catch you next week!
Well the mud didn't seem to bother Richard too much! I have been watching his channel for quite awhile. It was great to watch you all together. He knows his stuff!! Some great finds as well!! Loved the variety of ink wells!!
Thanks Nancy! So glad you enjoyed it. It was awesome to meet up with another mudlark, especially Richard who has helped and taught us so much about identifying finds! Really look forward to seeing him again on the Thames soon.. Take care and thanks for watching x
Thanks Gebrand! Haha welllll... 😂 we did all manage to fall over at some point in some particularly squelchy patches of mud! You’re right, Richard is the best and he does certainly know his stuff!
Incredible finds! I find native American pottery approximately the same age. But the natives here weren't nearly as advanced as the Roman's were. For example, the bow and arrow was not invented here until around 700AD. I would have a hard time leaving a single piece of Roman pottery behind! Looking forward to your future finds
I ALWAYS love your videos, and I am a fan of Richard Hemery's knowledge and generosity in sharing his knowledge!! I thought I had his book, but I search of my bookshelves showed otherwise so thanks to you, I just ordered a copy via ebay! Thank you again for another wonderfully muddy adventure from the dry, non-muddy comfort of my bed!
Thank you so much! It was a fabulous adventure with Richard, we’ve learnt so much from him and his book! So pleased you’ve bought a copy, it really is so useful and useable! So pleased you enjoyed the video, more muddy adventures next week! 😀 take care and thanks for watching x
I have Never Ever seen Richard so muddy!!! LOLOL But what a treat- and a real adventure out there in the deep and thick! And yer finds ain't too shabby neither 💜 Looking forward to seeing close-ups of those Roman pieces on instagram ; ) Cheers from Maine! p.s. Richard pointing out the dragging straw technique reminded me of when I was finding Native American pottery- shell-tempered, certainly rough. Often decorated by pressing on grasses or straw-- or an ear of corn!
Glad you enjoyed it!! Ahhh yes haha he truly embraced the mud it was magnificent to be out there with him! Such a fun and muddy adventure. Ohh that's wonderful to hear the similarities to the sherds you have found of Native American pottery! How cool x
This was so good, I had to watch it twice! I just love Richard! He's an amazing person and isn't the world a better place with him in it? Thanks Mudpies for including him in your lark! 😊
Oh how I envy you two. Out on the open air searching through the squishy mud for such exciting finds. Your anticipation is contagious. Well done. So good to see Richard there too. Your videos get better & better. Thank you.
This had to be your muddiest lark yet!! So funny! :D I like the "doorknob" ink bottle best. I'd say you've tagged it, Andy, for all future finds. ;) The blue relish/sauce bottle is also stunning, and of course, even a slightly damaged Codd is a great find. Such wonderful adventures, and there'll be another one next week!! What could be better? :D See you then. Take care & stay safe.
Ayyyy thanks Noralee! Mmmm yes the stoneware ink and blue jar are real beauties and we have cut the codd bottle down to give it a new life as a glass/storage jar. So pleased you enjoyed the adventure, looking forward to sharing next week’s with you! X😀
I think Richard loved his mud day with you! I’m so glad he “rescued” so many pieces, “can’t leave them there! “ Such a fun video. I really enjoyed it! I can’t help but wonder HOW on earth you got home covered in so much mud😁
Yayyyy thanks Marie! The bucket list is getting smaller that’s for sure! But our ideas on what’s possible to find keeps growing lol! So exciting hunting for treasure in the mud, thank you for joining the adventures 😀
That mud bath you three had takes me back to a fun experience I had in my younger days. Thanks for another entertaining video. Those finds were wonderful, especially the inks and that large blue bottle. Richard is good value. Sue and Ian, Australia
An absolute joy to watch! You two never disappoint and adding Richard's knowledge only enhanced the adventure. Thank you, thank you! My faves were the blue bottle and the tobacco tamper. And of course the decorated fine Roman piece!!!💗
I so enjoyed watching the 3 of you. My favorite part was the grins on all your faces while you were covered in mud. I've never seen Richard smile so wide! Loved all you finds!!
It was so nice when we cleaned it up and it's true beauty was revealed!😍 Makes me wonder about other muddy bottles i=I didn't bring home... You just can't tell when theres that much mud lol!
Isnt it an amazing feeling that someones hands, thousands of years ago, crafted those items for their daily use...not even remotely knowing how much sheer joy we would gain from them?❤
You’re two lovely, good and well meaning interesting people and a credit to this wonderful country we live in. If more people were like you two the world would be a much better place. I hope you have many happy years larking together, you deserve it. Keep it up 👌🏻
That is such a wonderfully kind comment, how lovely! Thank you. I'm pleased our good vibes come across in the videos as we do just genuinely love being out there hunting for muddy treasure and having a laugh in the gloop x Take care and thanks for watching
Very informative video today. It was brilliant that you had Richard Hemery with you to explain all the different varieties of Roman Pottery as well as other pottery. We will never see Richard that muddy again. How are you going to top the past few weeks now? Take care and be safe.
Hahaha it was rather spectacularly muddy this week! Pleased you enjoyed it, it really was fab to have Richard guide us on our finds and teach us so many new things. We can't wqait to meet with him again on the Thames soon, gonna be awesome! Out in the mud this weekend, hopefully continue our lucky streak. Thanks for watching and take care x
i loved this! What an amazing honer for you two to host Richard on your outing...you had amazing finds and I loved the information he shared! Thanks to you both and Richard for a delightful video:)
That’s wonderful feedback, thanks Kathi! It was great to meet Richard and use his incredible knowledge base lol. Looking forward to a Thames adventure with him soon.. thanks for watching and you take care! X
Wow Richard got caked in mud but it was worth it for some lovely finds. i love finding roman pot but i did like the bell ink. a super trip..stay lucky....V...
Hey Victor! Haha yes he was definitely the muddiest of us, however we did all manage to fall in it at least once haha 😂 yessss, the bell ink is definitely a special one. So kind of Richard to gift it to us! Thanks for watching as always and you take care x
I have been having a few bad days and as soon as I saw that you’d dropped the new video I started to feel better... ...and thats BEFORE I saw that you seem to have met up with the Creature From the Mirey Lagoon... The good thing, Richard, is that that mud washed off... eventually
Awhh that’s so lovely to hear our video cheered you up a little! Haha we had a lot of fun out there in the mud despite falling multiple times lol.. Great to meet Richard and learn from him, very much looking forward to next time on the Thames! 😀
Not so much for the phone. I had a little Kodak Brownie camera (pale green) that I was given when I was three or four and stood up to being dropped banged about in the bottom of bags, and worked tight through middle school. It did that despite gale-force winds blowing sand in every crevice during a trip to Brighton (1962) with the wind blowing sand into everything including seared jars for out picnic. My Brownie still worked despite a persistent grating sound when you pressed the trigger lever.
@@Mudpies Poor Richard appeared to get the worst of it. Baptism by goop. Have you thought of bottling the stuff as a slin-sodtening treatment... or, perhaps offering mud-bath excursions?
What a wonderful adventure we had. I always enjoy mudlarking with you. Richard had so much knowledge to share. Your treasures are fantastic. Can't wait for our next learning adventure. Thank you for letting me tag along. Stay Blessed, Safe and Healthy Grandma from Florida, USA
OMG 🤗 firstly, that was a great video in terms of production and I can appreciate it may have been quite a battle with wind and mud to get the shots you did. I love that you took Richard out to the Roman kiln area. He so deserves to have that chance and the three of you looked like you had so much fun. Plus the shared learning that you’ve now shared with us was very cool. Then the finds!!! Amazing, my favourite is the high end decorated piece that Josie found although there’s lots of great finds to choose from. Your channel is getting better and better. Did Richard have anything to say about the Roman pot you found in the last episode as yo what it would have been used for? My wish for you next is to find a Samian kiln area - ahh the drool 🤤
Just found this gem of a video! 🌝 What an amazing fun in the mud day you guys had with your amazing guest Richard H. ❤️ all the finds. But, the Romans was off the charts!!! 🤗
Oi, oi! Collab it! Wonderful to see a mud-dipped Richard Hemery beaming and so excited in the “Roman Zone”. More great finds; a legendary expert; excited Mudpies, and of course mud! What more could we ask for?
This was everything and more !! World class collab with the Mudpies and the master of pottery, Richard Hemery!! 🙌🏼 I cannot believe how muddy you guys got. But it looked like such fun. 🥰🌼 #SupremeSquelchSquading 🤣

I know it’s going to be a great one when you have the “board shoes” on!
Ayyy absolutely! 😀🙌
Click like immediately, then watch. MudPies guaranteed watching joy.🇨🇦☮️❤️

Your Bucket List must be getting ticked off... All these wonderful finds, so great to see. Love your Channel soooooo much 💕💕💕💕
Yayyyy thanks Marie! The bucket list is getting smaller that’s for sure! But our ideas on what’s possible to find keeps growing lol! So exciting hunting for treasure in the mud, thank you for joining the adventures 😀
1800 hundred years later and the mud gives up its magic...glad you are there to find it, sharing it with us - thank you!
That mud bath you three had takes me back to a fun experience I had in my younger days. Thanks for another entertaining video. Those finds were wonderful, especially the inks and that large blue bottle. Richard is good value. Sue and Ian, Australia
Thank you Ian and Sue! Over the following days we kept finding more and more mud !
An absolute joy to watch! You two never disappoint and adding Richard's knowledge only enhanced the adventure. Thank you, thank you! My faves were the blue bottle and the tobacco tamper. And of course the decorated fine Roman piece!!!💗
Thanks Nicole! 😄
I so enjoyed watching the 3 of you. My favorite part was the grins on all your faces while you were covered in mud. I've never seen Richard smile so wide! Loved all you finds!!
Awhh thanks Mary, we certainly had a lot of fun out there in the mud, despite the many squelchy miles and falls lol! More muddy adventures next week x
That light blue bottle made me gasp when it was revealed. That's beautiful!!!
It was so nice when we cleaned it up and it's true beauty was revealed!😍 Makes me wonder about other muddy bottles i=I didn't bring home... You just can't tell when theres that much mud lol!
Wonderful outing, really appreciated Richards knowledge. Josie is a legend for saying "posh legend " ! Thanks Mud Pies 🌸🌿

Awh haha thank you Steve! It is rather a long way out...
Very informative video today. It was brilliant that you had Richard Hemery with you to explain all the different varieties of Roman Pottery as well as other pottery. We will never see Richard that muddy again. How are you going to top the past few weeks now? Take care and be safe.

@@Mudpies BRILLIANT !
I have been having a few bad days and as soon as I saw that you’d dropped the new video I started to feel better... ...and thats BEFORE I saw that you seem to have met up with the Creature From the Mirey Lagoon...
The good thing, Richard, is that that mud washed off... eventually
It’s probably really good for the complexion!
Were there swan dives involved in the mud today? Some mud initiation rituals that Richard had to go through? Enjoyed ❤️👍🏼
Hahahah may as well have been! We had to crawl out of a rather thick and sticky section of mud lol, was rather spectacular! 😂
This episode is full of the most adorable dimples!! 😁 (And that blue bottle is gorgeous!)
Awhhh haha thanks Lori! 😀 smiles all round!
And forgot to say love the popping in the videos with the finds.
Ayyyy thanks Rachel! It's a rather satisfying noise we think lol x
Wow lovely day with Richard.SUPER JUICY finds.
How wonderful hobnobbing it with Richard Hemery, and some rather lovely finds aswell
Haha thanks Brett, it was a wonderful day out all together 😀
Great to see Richard joining you both. Great day on and apparently in the mud.
😂 At one point crawling.... off camera 🤣
What a wonderful adventure we had. I always enjoy mudlarking with you. Richard had so much knowledge to share. Your treasures are fantastic. Can't wait for our next learning adventure. Thank you for letting me tag along.
Stay Blessed, Safe and Healthy

Maybe we could take a trip to France or Germany as most Samian was made there. A small amount was made in Colchester and a kiln was excavated there.
@@richardhemery6916 wow that would be amazing 😃
I had the pleasure of meeting Richard last year,he confirmed my find of a Roman tile, with a dog paw print on it!!
He is a true gentleman and extremely knowledgeable. That's an epic find Charles! 🔥
I cannot believe how muddy you guys got. But it looked like such fun. 🥰🌼
#SupremeSquelchSquading 🤣
Have any of your finds been museum quality?
Fascinating history on the items!
