Thanks so much for making this video! I'm in my 50's and started trying to learn trials on my full squish bike about a year ago. I haven't made nearly the progress you have, but I'm so encouraged seeing what you've been able to accomplish.
Get a trials or street trials bike with good brakes if you can! things will get so much easier and clearer that you will see progression from day to day!
This video inspired me so much. Been trying some stuff for years but never fully committed and most of all never been in touch with anybody who can learn stuff from. I'm 50 now, in good shape and mentally ready to try this time for good. Thanks a lot.
In the same boat - 51 this year, been mountainbiking since I was 20. I've always wanted to be able to back hop, but never really managed it. I think learning on something smaller than a FS 29er will be a good start. Lots of good info in this video!
This is simply THE best video I have watched on this subject. THANK YOU! I have been mountain biking for over 30 years but trials is the most impressive discipline to me and I litterally dreamed of being able to do it. Only now in my mid 40's I am able to pull super long wheelies, short fakies, 180's etc. I have been able to do back wheel hops for about 2 years, but i can only do about 4 hops. Now I know why, it has to do with the crank moving up a little with each hop. Now I will be trying to unlock my brain to unlock the rear wheel haha Thanks a lot for this
Thank you very much! The kind words are greatly appreciated! Keep with it and you'll be hopping and gapping line a pro eventually! Just got to get in the reps!
I find this so exciting. I bought a trials bike but have yet to figure out that pedal kick. Soooo sexy. It’s a goal for this year for sure! Great video!
Right on! I just got a used trials bike as well. I was starting to find that I was having more joy just playing around in parking lots trying to do silly little "micro-trials" moves on curbs than out trail riding. It helps me feel like a kid again. If you manage to figure out some good ways for us old dogs to learn some trials skills I hope you can put them out on video.
You know what you did sir?.. you give me and many others our age hope and inspiration. Please do more tutorial videos, btw, i love the bench idea and im gonna use that to learn too. Thank you so much!
Thank you! I'd love to do another tutorial...but first I need to figure out if there are more skills that I think i understand enough to share my thoughts on how to learn them.
Older bearded to older bearded... we made a vital health choice to start trial! One can never be to old to start but could become too old by whining away from discovering fun, self-discipline and self-control on as many different activities as possible! I could get on the back wheel easily and reach my half minute hopping after 12 hours of training on a trial bike. Hopping backward came very fast, as you mention, as it just needs simple leg flexion then extension. Short distance sideway hops came under funny almost controled appearence after 20 to 25 hours. Forward hops... ouch! I couldn't do more than a few centimeters until more than 60 hours of practice. Realeasing brakes and synchronizing pedaling with precompressing the tire and with pulling the handlebar was a difficult ability to get. I practiced alone here in Quebec (Canada). I had to watch many tutorial videos like those of Ali C because the scare of falling on my back (also due to past experience... with tools in my waist-pack... and bruises along vertebra) caused a blokage from trying to release that monstrous back brake! Thanks for your nice, simple, and right to the points video!
My biggest mistakes on my last month (3 month ago because I broke a part I can't find. I do a bit of hand machining here and there now and then to make my own at a very slow pace) was to try to forward up to higher obstacle while starting the hop to close by that higher obstacle so bumpimg back the back wheel every time. I need to get confident on being able to reach the obstacles end start from as far back as I can to allow a curb up and forward to actually get high enough before being at the horizontal displacement required to touch the top of the obstacle! So for now I'm far from overjumping to flip on my back... instead the wheel bump almost make me flip forward to land on my face!!!! We look all funny until we get the proper sequences for each tricks!
Awsome It is so much easier to learn from other people lesrning pricess process ,and from the understanding of the phisical process. Thank you so much friend .
Thanks alot for this video. I just asked my friend who I bought my bike from, how to jump forward, the this video came up in my flow. I was driving MC Trial when I was young and now I am 50 I will try biketrial :)
Wow! Sir, you're an inspiration. This is a reminder that trials need not to be athletic. You just have to learn the basic skills. In this sport, you are your own competitor.
Thanks, Mark! All it takes is time and dedication! I totally agree with your comment. Its a battle against yourself. Trials is so much fun because you can always find something to challenge yourself and progress your skills.
Thanks for this tutorial. I just got a inspired hex last week and I'm going to give this a shot. The bench method looks very doable and I appreciate the insight from someone who's newer rather than a pro who doesn't think through HOW they actually learned it. they just try and teach it as if you already had the skills. 👊. Nice edit too btw. Good overlaid videos to visualize what you were saying. 👌
Thanks, man! I appreciate the kind words and am happy to hear the video was user friendly. ;-) Your comment is exactly why I wanted to do this video. I've watched a lot of videos where the rider is so good that the skill is like breathing for them. It's definitely not like that for a beginner so I wanted to try to share some of the things I thought were helpful as I was trying to learn these new skills.
You're a beast old man! I'm learning on a full squish mtb and seeing all these videos really makes me want a shorter dirt jumping type bike. Your how to stands out from the others bc you are teaching toward the goal of clearing obstacles as opposed to just hopping in place to show off like the others. Great explanation, thanks for taking the time. 🤘
Epic video, thanks. Great skills! This is next on my list once I’ve got the manny sorted (just need ANOTHER 2 years…!!). Did you have any issues with your wrists? Last time I messed around with hoping my wrists were in bad shape afterwards (clicking and hurting!!).
This was a fantastic video Todd - thank you for making it! I will readily admit that I'm stuck on step two (lack of practice of course...), but I'm going to go back to step one to practice repositioning the pedals due the natural 'roll-back'. Btw, your gap @13:11 was AWESOME!
Thank you very much for the kind words. Good luck on progressing to step 3. It took me a couple months and may hours of practice to move from step 2 to step 3. You’ll get there! Figuring out the pedal position will definitely help. 👍🏼 Thanks, again, about the gap. At the time, that was my longest gap and (as the text in the screen indicates) it going me 277 attempts to finally land it! Trials is great b/c, at whatever stage you’re at, when you put in time and effort you can see little measurable gains, and then you can just keep building on them! Good luck! 👍🏼
Hahahaha!!! Good to hear! He’s a *bit* better than me, but I did feel that maybe there was some value I could provide as a beginner. Most tutorials I’ve watched are from guys who have done this do long that it’s like breathing to them. Good luck!
Fantastic video and advice, thanks for taking the time to make it and show the steps you used. I’ve been trying to do a track stand “pop” into a manual position on the pedals to initiate getting on the back tire, but I’ve also got that fear of going over the back and I’ve been stuck with 1-2 hops for now. Hoping to use your advice of the park bench to start getting myself more comfortable in the upright position. Thanks!
Thanks! The bike I'm riding in this video is a 24" Inspired Arcade. If you watch my other videos, I also have a 26" Inspired Hex and a 26" comp bike. I don't have a 20". They're not for me.
Great video I’m trying to kick up to the back wheel right now think I’m leaning forward too much like u pointed out, I looped out hard early on and it’s set my confidence back some but onwards and upwards as they say 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I hope it helped a bit. Big loop outs definitely can mess with your mind and set things back. But if you stick with it, you'll get more comfortable with your braking and your confidence will grow. Good luck!
Hi Todd, thanks so much for this video. It is very helpful. I am at the beginner stage with the bench trick but my issue right now is my side balance. Could you explain how to achieve the side balance because I’m struggling to even stay on the bike for a single hop before falling to either left or right.
respect bro, my dream was learn this, im 34 YO so i start and make this first small jump, now can almost 10 jumps but its still long way to do Your work
Will this training using a bench be helpful when learning to ride an enduro bike? I'm super excited about trial tricks that can be done on a heavy enduro bike, thanks for the idea with the bench, it's awesome!
I haven’t tried the bench with an enduro bike, but I think the bench would still hop. You can back hop any bike with the right technique. Good luck! 👍🏼
Great tutorial. Good job learning the skill. I am still in the process of getting this down. My goal isn’t to become a trials rider per se, but to add trials skills to my MTB experience on the trails. I am learning on a diet jumper and would prefer not to invest in a trials bike. Do you think I can get the hop/gapping down with a dirt jumper or does this make it too hard to learn?
You can absolutely learn it on a dirt jumper. I can gap almost as far on my 29er hardtail MTB as I can on my trials bike. A dirt jumper should be a nice substitute for a trials bike. Good luck! 👍🏼
@@todd_on_bikes thanks again for the inspiration. I am 51yo old school XC mountain biker who never learned the fun street/trials/BMX skills. It’s fun to explore a whole new fun part of the sport!
I guess there is at least one more way to get to back wheel without proper pedal kick (and most likely that's the one I use now). You do an endo-pull and jump, but in the mid-air you pedal a bit so you land with kinda right feet position. Looks like now I can get to rear wheel and jump a bit, but it's still scary to lean back much and do a kick. 8-(
@@todd_on_bikes Partially (or "partly"?) because of your video, partially because of SuperRider's now I can lift the front wheel up and jump a few (sometimes 5+) times on it. But looks like now I have the same problem as you did - I lean too much forward when trying to pedal kick. On video looks like I stand almost vertical. And I even manage (sometimes) to jump... for 5-10 cm. But it is really hard. So thanks for helping me.
Great stuff Todd! So inspiring. I'm 48 year old family man.. trying to learn trials on my Santa Cruz Chameleon Mullet ( 29" front, 27.5" back tire). Thinking of getting a 24" inspired flow to progress a little faster. I am 5'11" and trying back wheel hops on the rather tall Chameleon is challenging. I think it's more of the rider's limited abilities than the bike, but wanted to check with you if going to the Inspired flow will help. I practice about 30-60 min 4-5 days a week.. focusing on trackstands, hops , rocks, huffing and puffing away 😆 Noticed that you also have a competition trials bike. Any advice for about my thoughts on getting the Inspired flow 24" would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi, there! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I think that it would definitely be easier to learn trials on a Flow over a Chameleon. I ride a Chameleon as well. It can be back hopped, but its definitely easier on a trials bike. Focusing on track stands is a great idea! Also, I think that two wheel hops up stairs can real help learn balance at the beginning of a trials journey. Good luck!
@@todd_on_bikes Thank you Todd. Will do. one more thing, did you feel the need to wear protection for your back (spine )? I do wear knee, shin and elbow guards, and a helmet of course.
@@sambarjack i haven't worn any spine protection. really, my only protective wear has been my helmet. but if you feel like you want to, i'd certainly support wearing back protection, etc. i never wear shin guards and i have a decent collection of scars on my shin. more protective gear is never a bad thing.
@@cartermuszkiewicz9933 it will be more difficult on your MTB and with an MTB hub. Much easier with the geometry, weight, hub and brakes that come with an Inspired trials bike. But keep it up and you’ll get it.
Why did you choose a street trials bike vs a comp bike starting out. Would you make the same decision if you had the choice? I’m looking to get into trials myself. Thanks!
Hi Todd, thanks for inspiring us, i am begineer to on this sport and have problem to back hop the obstacles, still try and trying :) i have questions, may i know what psi you use on your tyres. Thanks bro!
Hi, Fazry! I ride at 40 psi, which was recommended to me by other trials riders when they saw one of my Instagram clips with where I had really low psi and some guys thought I might damage my rims. Good luck as you start learning trials! Have a lot of fun with it! 👍🏼
I learned this at age 44 and I can do it on MTB as well. So I am confident you can learn similar stuff on MTB if you put in the time and effort. Good luck! 👍🏼
@@todd_on_bikes Thank you for the adviced you have given. I've always wanted to get into it but never had the confidence or a trials bike. Just wanted to learn we what I have got and slowly progress.
No worries. Take your time! I was hopping in place and not kicking the pedal for months for the exact same reason. Eventually, you'll get more comfortable and you can work in the pedal kick. You got it!
BY THE WAY WHAT BRAKES DO YOU USE? I HAVE SOME MAGURA MT5 BUT I DON'T SEE THEM GOOD, I HAVE ORDERED THE MAGURA MT7 PRO HC3 STORM HC 203 I HOPE THESE NEW BRAKES GIVE ME MORE CONFIDENCE.
I believe it's really hard to learn this stuff when you're not a teenager anymore. At my 34 I can jump on back wheel... literally couple of time and then I fall. Feels to my I loose my momentum somewhere. Like the Earth pulls me much more standing on back wheel then standing on feet.
Even 3 years after filming this video, I still can’t manual. At this point, I could manual about 2 feet max. Just roll in, pop that tire up, and the bench catches you. That’s all the manual skills you need for this. 👍🏼

@@sambarjack i haven't worn any spine protection. really, my only protective wear has been my helmet. but if you feel like you want to, i'd certainly support wearing back protection, etc. i never wear shin guards and i have a decent collection of scars on my shin. more protective gear is never a bad thing.
Great video. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed! 👍🏼
Don't you have pads and ride bike parks? I couldn't imagine falling backwards on concrete without wearing a spine/tailbone protector
A ver si en esta semana que viene soy capaz de hacer ese truco , ya subiré mis resultados y te etiquetaré para que tú lo veas.un saludo crack
Thank god I can back hop now!!
Now you'll be extra steezy. ;-)
@@todd_on_bikes I hope so I haven’t been able to do more than 2 at a time
@@cartermuszkiewicz9933 it will be more difficult on your MTB and with an MTB hub. Much easier with the geometry, weight, hub and brakes that come with an Inspired trials bike. But keep it up and you’ll get it.
Why did you choose a street trials bike vs a comp bike starting out. Would you make the same decision if you had the choice? I’m looking to get into trials myself. Thanks!
Hi, Jon! I just answered your question on Instagram. Thanks for checking out my video. 👍🏼 good luck as you start your trials adventure!
U are a handsome old man.. 😄
🤣🙏🏼
What size wheel are you riding? 24" or 26"
24" It's an Inspired Arcade Pro.
Ha! Going 40 and just bought my first MTB in 20 years to learn the pedal hop! A 24" NS Suburban...
Nice! Good luck!
I am in me mid 30's. Am I too old to learning tricks on the bike? Would I be able to learn on a MTB?
I learned this at age 44 and I can do it on MTB as well. So I am confident you can learn similar stuff on MTB if you put in the time and effort. Good luck! 👍🏼
@@todd_on_bikes Thank you for the adviced you have given. I've always wanted to get into it but never had the confidence or a trials bike. Just wanted to learn we what I have got and slowly progress.
Check.. Good Video
Thanks! 👍🏼
Im getting better at back hops and staying in place, but I'm always so scared to push on the pedal to move forward cos I'll always fall back.
No worries. Take your time! I was hopping in place and not kicking the pedal for months for the exact same reason. Eventually, you'll get more comfortable and you can work in the pedal kick. You got it!
BY THE WAY WHAT BRAKES DO YOU USE?
I HAVE SOME MAGURA MT5 BUT I DON'T SEE THEM GOOD,
I HAVE ORDERED THE MAGURA MT7 PRO HC3 STORM HC 203
I HOPE THESE NEW BRAKES GIVE ME MORE CONFIDENCE.
I use Hope Tech 3 Trial Zone brakes. I love ‘em.
I believe it's really hard to learn this stuff when you're not a teenager anymore. At my 34 I can jump on back wheel... literally couple of time and then I fall. Feels to my I loose my momentum somewhere. Like the Earth pulls me much more standing on back wheel then standing on feet.
Keep with it! You can do it. But it takes a lot of practice!!
I stay 15min away from the diepkloof square shopping centre
I feel like I’m never gunna get it, i will keep trying until i do tho!
@@Crackeras620 I like that attitude. keep at it and your body will figure it out with enough reps. It will become muscle memory. 🤙🏼
The bench tip is great. I found one today and messed around on it for a lil bit! Thank you!
I have hurt myself trying to do one of the tricks that you demonstrated. Can you please give me the name of your Lawyer. Thank you.
When the guy said that one can use manual to get on to the bench it became obvious that he has some serious background for a beginner )
Even 3 years after filming this video, I still can’t manual. At this point, I could manual about 2 feet max. Just roll in, pop that tire up, and the bench catches you. That’s all the manual skills you need for this. 👍🏼
@@todd_on_bikes yes sure thank you for the tutorial ;) btw I saw your old 180 bmx video and wish I could have same level as a beginner here
great explanation , better than han´s rey tutorial
Ah, you’re too kind. Thanks! 👍🏼
Por fin amigo, logré desbloquear la rueda trasera, habré visto este video como 10 veces, buscando tus consejos, te lo agradezco de veras, maestro, saludos desde España, te dejo mi progreso, gracias de nuevo.
