    As a Brit, living in the US in quite a soccer town (Seattle), I think the MLS will always struggle with the lack of promotion and relegation. There is no tension. There are too many games that don't mean much, in England, every single game matters for most teams. The standard and the atmosphere is not too bad, but it's the lack of jeopardy.

    • @DannyXXXXX
      @DannyXXXXX 2 месяца назад +9

      They are going to get to 40 clubs, then split it into a premier league and a 2nd tier championship sorta deal and have relegation between the two.

    • @grantdowling8550
      @grantdowling8550 2 месяца назад +10

      In the US, sports franchises are all about making money for the league and each other. Relegation would pop that balloon. So that’s a big hurdle the MLS must clear somehow that goes against American business.

    The biggest problem is the lack of support for soccer here in America. From the grass roots level a lot of players need to pay a big fee to play for the academies over here. On top of that, the popularity of the sport over here. It’s came a long from the ‘94 World Cup but it’s still maybe the 5th most popular sport at best. Hopefully with coach like Pochettino could bring more interest to the game

    • @davidnoriega8723
      @davidnoriega8723 Месяц назад

      You don't mean "in America," you probably mean in the US (or "in North America," if you wish to include Mexico and Canada) because there is support for fútbol (soccer) in South America and in Central Amêrica, as indicated by the World Cup Championships achieved and the fact that neither the US nor the Canada teams are a match for either national or club teams from those areas (though Mexico sometimes has been at a higher technical and execution levels).

    The biggest hurdle the USMNT have and will always have is the pay to play wall. If you don’t have the resources to pay your way into top level academies, you won’t make it very far. The immediate goal should be to introduce relegation and promotion. See how quickly clubs / managers / players put effort in for 3 points when they know they can be relegation fodder in any given season!

      Promotion and relegation will never be introduced into MLS as long as all of the current owners and governors of the league are where they are, the newer owners especially have zero desire to put their investments (San Diego FC's owner paid half a billion dollars for the franchise) at risk like that.
      Now on the other hand if they scrap the damn salary cap, MLS could give the Saudis a run for their money in terms of getting big players over here.

    For US being a top 5 jobs... I think it is for being hosts. It's also for the upside. There is enough talent in the US pool to take them higher than they've been in a long time. If Qfinal is doable, then semifinal is doable... because anything can happen in a 1-off match. US has a history of outperforming expectations, but we've drifted from that in more recent years. Poch has done that with sides before, and has struggled to do that in recent positions. I think the material is there to make a run. It always takes a bit of luck too.

    Carragher's bar in New York will get a lot more than just Scouse fans as it will be mistaken as an Irish bar by New Yorks huge Irish/American population given the name Carragher, as for Neville describing Pochettino as one of the best coaches in football where exactly is the evidence for that silly statement?

    • @MarkWestHam

      the evidence for it being a silly statement is the fact it was uttered by Neville 🤣

      @@MarkWestHamthe first two spurs seasons set the narrative. They were beloved and Neville gushed about them. The UCL final run was good. But it did run out of gas but that was mainly because they didn't buy any new players. Poch is good. Especially for the USA. It's a coup.

    The USA reached the quarterfinal in 2002 so it isn't unprecedented. The issue is, if Poch only gets out of the group at a home world cup & that's it, he's only equaled what every manager before achieved (Berhalter, Jurgen, Bradley)save for Arena in 2002. The key difference is they did it away from home.

      Imagine they'll make short trips over and film 2-3 weeks worth of content in a few days. I might be wrong but it's probably about maximising their time when they are in the US to keep the content flowing regularly.
      They must obviously think the interest is there and also have the world cup in USA, Canada and Mexico coming up in just a couple of years.
