This fictional movie tells the story of Saketh Ram (Kamal Haasan). His wife Aparna (Rani Mukherji) is molested and killed during riots in Calcutta. He is convinced that Mahatma Gandhi (Naseeruddin Shah) is responsible for all the problems happening in the country and sets out to kill him. The rest of the movie shows whether he succeeded in his mission or not.

Kamal hassan almost included all cultures of India in a single movie ...casting was perfect probably because the language and caste of the actors in real life is same ... Tamil(kamal,vaali,vasundhara,hema Malini,sowkar janaki,yg mahendran scenes), Marathi (Atul kulkarni,maharaja scenes),Bengali (rani mukherji), sindhi (lalvani), punjabi muslim(sharukh),nasruddin shah (as gandhi - gujarati) sikhs(in riot scenes), kerala (nair in ram's house in calcutta in a scene), kannadiga ( person who escorts ram to hotel in delhi)...costumes,art direction was perfect .....worth for oscar .. probably the first (of its kind )pan indian movie....
