Over the last few days, we have shared some of the invaluable video footage we got with Jim, while spending a week visiting with him in Maine during his summer market season. We offer these special highlights as our gift to the growing community who are working together to create an even better grass roots food movement.
Jim has been a pivotal role model of ours since 2011, not long after we first began to grow food. We can truly say that he was a big catalyst for change in our lives & we owe the foundation of our success to Jim's influence. Now it is your turn to spend a week with Jim, at your own pleasure.

Each year in late spring, Jim travels up to a little town just outside Eastport, Maine, to grow the most delicious, clean & vibrant food you can find. Then in early fall, he packs up & heads down to Florida to repeat the same plan.
Jim does not follow rules, He creates his own evolving adaptations; a mixture of pure refined classic agriculture (the scythe), techniques passed along by elder growers, elements from books that have proven their worth & the intrensic download from living with the land & slowing down enough to read it's own suggestions.
He is able to make an honest living doing this very thing he loves so much. His days bring him joy, purpose, connection & peace. The insights & techniques he has collected are invaluable. He plants, harvests, preps & markets in a way that naturally flows & the whole natural farming process is just waiting to be shared with you.
We have been to visit Jim before, but had never been able to come during the best & most productive time of the year for Jim. Everything is growing, blooming, ripening & the scenery around his camp is pure magic.

This video makes me remember when I was a kid and I had a lime tree that never wanted to grow much fruit or new branches. Some day I stole a huge bag full of cut grass from the public workers of a park, then emptied it next to the lime tree and wanted to compost it later, but rain season began and I turned lazy, so it composted by itself over the ground and the lime tree grew up like crazy, it was awesome 😁
That winter was too cold and my lime tree died though ☹

It is so interesting to watch, how Jim has really thought about some details, that he encounters daily. For example the way he sets his feet, while planting. I immediately thought he really thought this through: one knee supporting his spine, and by lifting his feet just a little bit he is easily able to move around in between the salad plants: a posture with which you can plant for hours without straining your back. The same goes for the scything: The technique he uses is so, that you could work for hours without getting tired.(I always thought golfing was invented by somebody who knew scything and who also knew how to use a hammer)

I love this, wood chips are great but being rural I just cannot get enough without spending lots... I have seven hectares of pasture and graze someone else's cows but there are not enough to keep on top of growth. Time to keep one paddock for trees and veges, three for the cows and one for grass... I wonder if I should get a scythe, no petrol required, it won't breakdown... yes!!
Eventually I would love to have no cows and all trees!

The gloves culture in north america has always intrigued me, is there any reason why you guys wear gloves to work with dirt? Is it too cold or something?
I'm from Brazil and I don't know anyone who wears them for gardening, even in our community garden near home where a lot of diverse people come to work, maybe it's just a cultural thing, but if you know of a reason I'd like to hear it :D, Thanks, loved your videos

I'm here after watching scything videos - I realised my technique needs help!
A question - a lot of what I'm scything is more than just grass - dandelions etc. If I put this n my veges will I be planting dandelions!! There will be seeds everythwere in the air in either case.

Everything took a beating here in Houston hoping my plants that got knock down come back. Thinking I could take cuttings from the knock down plant and just replant.

I love the Salanova's and if I cut them leaving a few leaves in the rosette It grows back with like 4 mini heads I can cut again.

Jim, I am brand new to growing food at home. I am gathering stuf for my first concrete block. Raised bed. How much hay should I buy to get things rolling along? I am here in Deltona Florida.

Also, how is it that you don't get grass seeds from the cut grass mulch making weeds in the veg garden ???

I eat way too much processed food, I wish I had my own garden so I can eat fresh greens and vegetables everyday.
