We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Don't visit Dubrovnik by cruise ship ;)
Never done one, never will. I'm not knocking those who choose to but a cruise would seem like a sanitized view of the world. That and my wife doesn't like the ideal of being that far from land in an emergency so that seals the deal for me.
Yes, yes a million times yes.
I just booked a Trip and I’m not going by cruise and I am extremely excited
There's no better way to travel than by cruise
The wall walk is must, great City.
Will be staying in Dubrovnik this September! Honestly can't wait. My dream destination.

How was it?
@@chryzos3091 cancelled due to covid of course! 😅 This comment was 4 years ago.
If you want to explore the place without the crowd, visit early in the morning. Thats what we did last time. We were able to have nice photos without photobombers and we witnessed the beautiful sunrise in the port❤️
This is one of the best videos I have seen with actual helpful tips for tourists coming to Croatia 🇭🇷. Great job!
Dubrovnik is one of my favorite places. We rented and apartment for ten days as our base camp and then travelled to Kotor, Bosnia and Split. It's so beautiful and the Croatian people are the best. So fun!!
rm brooklyn I have two days in dubrovnik and want to do a day trip. Which was better between kotor or Bosnia
@@MrLaxsavage Definitely Kotor. It's gorgeous.
Hey, Mark. I love ypur videos. I am from Croatia and have been a subscriber for a long time. I realy want to point out that Croatia is not just Dubrovnik, Split and the Islands. Istria, Zagorje, Dalmatian Zagora, and Inner Croatia and Slavonia all have magnificent nature, castles national parks and so on. I would love it if you came to one of these places and expperienced the charms of continental Croatia. Cheers from Karlovac (a wonderful town to, BTW)
Krunoslav Kovacec YES! Istria is one of the BEST places in Croatia to visit!!! I think the olive oils, black and white truffles are some of the best in the world!
@@bd111906 Thank you Bella.
We will get back! We have gone a few times and my parents have too. We all have enjoyed our visits. Big hug to you my Croatian fellow traveler!
I spent a few days up in Pula and absolutely loved it! And then I drove along the coast to Dubrovnik and I highly recommend people do that! It was soo beautiful!
@@stma05 Dubrovnik is very overrated. Locals don't realy like tourists, seeing as they overcrowd the city every day of the year. Its pretty but so is the rest of Croatia.
Watching all your Croatia videos because I’ll be going there in September! Can’t wait!
Yay back in Croatia
Pro tip: go to Dubrovnik in winter
Also fall.
I was in Dubrovnik for a school trip in 8th grade and Im never coming back there during summer
@@neptuneseye7832 why not during summer, I was thinking of going this summer...
@@sethroganlegend Its too hot there. The cheap hotels are garbage. Its overcrowded there. Cafes are expensives,...
Im not saying Dont go to the summer. Go there whenever you like but for me going on winter is better
@@neptuneseye7832 👍
Dubrovnik is a beautiful city but it's distroyed from mass tourism and also from game of thrones. I know it's filmed there. People should respect Dubrovnik.
Good video and I'm croatian
Mark ti praviš dobre videi i radi dalje tako.
Mark you make good videos and go further like tihs.

God Bless Croatia
Too many tourist ruin places and drive up prices for the locals. Many examples. Countries and cities could limit this but they love the money too much.
When is the best time to go? I am American but my family comes from Croatia and I am going to go there one day.
September, it’s less crowded and yet you can still go swimming!
@@thefreeman8791, I 've been to Dubrovnik twice. Once in the end of September and once in May. Both times temperatures were pleasant and it was not as crowded. Though in May the water is still cold.
Visiting it was expensive, but I have to say, it was definitely worth it for the views. There's also a cool small island nearby, with a monastery, peacocks and a botanical garden.
Lokrum Island! Mystery surrounds the island too - a nice place.
Good shoes are critical nearly everywhere! Great tips as always, Mark!
Tucker: "Have you been to Dubrovnik?"
Healy: "Twice last year!"
I'm here now and barely any tourists. Forget Summer. I love this place.
I was here in July of 2018. Beautiful city
going to Dubrovnik in July mega excited and thanks for this video mark!!!

Great video with lots of great information! Thank you for all you do and all the best from the west coast of Florida USA!!!
Cheers!
Love your videos keep them going
It's good to know about the water shoes. There's been too many times that I wished I would have had them.
To the point. You can enjoy the town in winter too as the town is nearly empty. Lokrum is only accessible in summer since it's a protected island
If you are a Game of Thrones fan, don't miss the tour! It was fabulous and a major highlight of my travels!!!
Dubrovnik je skup, ali za dobar burek, to nije problem.
You raise a good point on the walking shoes and pavement. I walk a lot and have really good shoes for that but I've found in some of the older cities the cobbled pavement can get really slippery. Since I like looking up when walking around this tends to be a problem (I've also nearly fallen a few times)😎
I have broken my ankles so many times I dont mess around
Just epoxy some of those bathtub anti slip thingys on the bottom of your shoes, you'll never slip on cobblestones again 😆😆😆😆
Thanks again Mark.
You are very welcome
Great video!
Wonderful video thx for posting that , best regards from Canada .Thx . 👌💕🍁🍒🍸✌

Hi thkz for the info👍I'm going there oct2020😊
Love it!!!!
Hello from Croatia😉💕
Great as ever. Loved Dubrovnik. A yomp up those stairs is def worth it. Not only is it cheaper but also the food gets better!. Kotor is one of the most beautiful places ive ever stayed at in my life and Mostar well those bridge divers are something else
We spent our time there in February and it was really great, almost no tourists xD
Went to Dubrovnik last September was only a handful of people there due to covid was amazing without the crowds
Sometimes I'm not especially interested in the place, but I'll still watch all the videos because I enjoy Mark's personality so much :D
That is really nice of you. Thank you
Good information thanks. Also, is it mandatory to have car seat for 3 yrs old child bus travel?
I’m going to Dubrovnik in september, is it still going to be a good weather then? Can you still go to the beach in September and swim? 😃
All really great tips and a great video! We can confirm not worrying about your place until a few days before and a day trip to Kotor, Montenegro is well worth it! We also found that leaving the city center to eat suddenly cuts the bill sometimes in half! 😳 One final tip we would add, is if you do go to Lokrum island, watch out for the nude beach. Can be a shock to stumble upon 😉
Seriously half
Fortunately it was pissing rain and November when I was there, so there weren't many other people. Had some good solo time in back lanes. And I agree about going into churches, everywhere :) I stayed in a good little homestay opposite the bus station. Was nice to 'get out of town' and go home after a few hours in the centre. Your vid's made me want to go back when it's sunnier
I'm glad you had a good time
I think you also need kuna for the boats to Lokrum Island. Not this video, but several years ago, the first Mark Wolters video I found was Dubrovnik. After searching "Rick Steves Dubrovnik" with nothing coming up, Mark's RUclips videos were there. I watched it and thought, hmm, Mark provides practical information for tourists and now have watched his videos since then (around 2016).
That is awesome to hear Len. And now we chat on various social media platforms 😄
Okay 👍 best suggestions ever 🤠💟
Kickass music at 5:24

Highly recommend people do the day trip to Mostar! It stops at a beautiful national park similar to Krka (which is an absolute see but if farther away). And Mostar is unlike any city I have ever seen before! In Mostar they will take their currency, the Croatian Kuna and the Euro (when I was there in 2018 anyway).
I agree about Mostar! and it's a beautiful journey up the coast to get there. I was there a few months ago and I recommend travellers staying over there rather than day tripping, if they have time. Mostar's so pretty by night.. .walking around the river markets, crossing the bridges . Btw Mostar's in Bosnia/Herzegovina, so European data network/SIMs won't work there.
Good before you go to learn a bit about a the history, what happened there in the war.. this is a good start.
ruclips.net/video/XX3Fcu0uA8A/видео.html
After Mostar, It's a wonderful early morning train ride up to Sarajevo- stunning scenery. Sarajevo's great to visit too
BTW.. Mostar and Sarajevo are in Bosnia/Herzegovina, which isn't in EU. Many places accept use Euro i but your European data network/SIMs won't work there.
Thanks for the tips wolter! I'll remember to bring my trekking shoes 😉
Wolters, we are still waiting for Bulgaria/Romania!
Actually, if you go in the morning 6-8, you should enjoy decent time with way less crowd.
Dubrovnik was great and better after 5pm.
Hi Mark, great video coming from you. I just have one question: how come you have never booked an airbnb? Because you are traveling with the family, maybe it will be more convenient for you. I am from Croatia but I have never visited Dubrovnik as this is a city on the expensive list.
We've booked dozens of airbnb. We prefer VRBO though
Doesn't have to be expensive: a few months ago stayed at a cheap lil homestay near the bus station, was great, even had a kitchen plus a restaurant next door. :)
looks beautiful!
It is. You and terry would like it
The shoes advice goes the same with Zadar.
Even in the early 1980s, Dubrovnik was hot and crowded in the summer.
What are your top 10 destinations for food
Love you Wolter!
Thank you
A lot of the foods better the higher up you go, the places in the bottom bit don’t have to try as hard due to the captive market down there.
top tip: don't eat or drink on stradun, they will rip you off. go somewhere in the side streets and you'll get local service at normal local prices. also the taxi drivers are famous for ripping people off too. visiting the city in spring or autumn is better, less people and still good weather.
Todella hieno paikka, olen käynnyt vuonna 1980.
Pro tip. Get the Dubrovnik Card! It is really cheap for what it offers you will return the investment almost on city walls price alone. Trust me I live here and make my living from turists.
I assume the point about currency is now obsolete?
Dubrovnik is such an amazing city! I went there in May 2017, and I absolutely loved it! Those are some great don'ts you have listed. I agree 100% about the one where you should have kunas with you. I remember seeing signs such as, "No Euros," when I went there. I also have one don't which I will share:
Don't forget to pack light when staying in Dubrovnik especially if you are staying in the old town. Otherwise, you will have a lot of fun hauling heavy luggage up and down the steps to your Airbnb!
or stay outside of the old town...;-)
and when stay at a slopy site there, do yourself a favour and take a taxi to a street above your accommodation and walk a few steps down with your luggage. there are plenty of taxis in Dubrovnik.
Try the Dubrovnik Ghosts and Mystery Walking Tour. The owner, Marija, does a great job of guiding you after dark thru the old streets and back alleys of Dubrovnik carrying her lantern and regaling you with tales of lost love and reported haunted history. The price is reasonable and it's a nice diversion.
Thanks for the tip!
Since 2023 Croatia has joined the Eurozone, from then on Euro/€ is the country's currency . Happy travels
We had our honeymoon in Dubrovnik in 1981 and the place was beautiful. Had intended to return but its far too busy and i think it would only spoil our memories of the place.
Do that in october and you will refresh your memories on the best way
Slippery streets and toddlers seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Also, great tip on the currency!
It never hurts to have $100 of the local currency on hand for small transactions, such as a newspaper, drink(slivovitz), or a quick snack (keflas or strudel and a coffee).
It's slippery only when it rains. And that happens 2-3 times in a season lol. Dubrovnik is great but better to wander the city after 5 or early in the morning.
If you want to stay in Dubrovnik and not pay to much then you should stay in Ivanica. Ivanica is on the boarder to Croatia but in Bosnia. You are only 8 km away from Dubrovnik old town
Great tips, as always. I was actually in Dubrovnik in early January this year, and it is a totally different experience than what I read about from the summer months. It is practically a ghost town. While the lack of tourists sounds like an amazing opportunity, it was actually quite miserable, for me anyway, because nothing was open! It is not an exaggeration to say that 99% of the stores/restaurants were closed, but the worst part was that Google said they were open.. You can imagine my surprise when I would walk around and find the shops bordered up!
Worse still, I expected the few places that were open to be cheaper because of the off-season. Not true! The 3 restaurants I found that were open were still just as expensive as it would have been in June (except for the place I stayed at, which was ~1/2 the price as it is in peak season).
I also couldn't find any grocery stores in walking distance at night whatsoever, so I went several nights rather hungry. I did find a nearby convenient store with more day hours.
So aside from seeing the walls (which only stay open until 3pm in the winter) and maybe seeing the Rector's Palace, it really isn't worth visiting in the winter.. There was so much history that I wish I could have learned, but there weren't even any walking tours around either. I would spend half a day here, tops.
(Now Zagreb on the other hand was a totally different experience. I absolutely loved it there in early January!)
Hey! B-Roll at the end!

Am I going crazy or did you re-dub the audio?
It's the alley stone walls
Don’t go there on a cruise ship. Stay overnight and enjoy it after hours. We had the walls to ourselves later in the day.
I see you're speaking in a narrow alley but with the sound quality of the video I could swear you sound like you were recording the audio indoors in a room with a ceiling. It's not bad it just sounds unusual. Nice touch though ending with some music and street life.
The alley was like a sound proof room. It was so loud that when I found this echoey back alley I knew I had to film there
What a beautiful place, I was on a cruise ship 😂😂😂

Dear Wolters at 2:06 you posted a picture of soparnik...the thing is the only real soparnik you can get is in split by someoen you now...this is just spinach pie
I was in Dubrovnik in 2013 and to pay I simply used the credit card (and two euro coin to buy a bottle of water, never again!) to pay everything.I don’t think that withdrawing krunas from an atm is a good idea, especially if you’re in a touristic area (where commissions are insane) and stay there only few hours.
nicknickbon 22 Commissions are only insane at Euronet atms and small regional banks. Go to larger multinational banks and commission is the price of a coffee.
That's right - stay away from theses Euronet ATMs.
I once witnessed an incident in a restaurant in Dubrovnik where an American tourist really got angry because they didn't take American Exprress - just Visa or Master Card. For my taste he really reacted arrogating.
I'm local and I'll explain you why it is so over crowded. Because of NO NOs the tourists keep doing.
1st NO NO, don't walk zig zag. We use the right side in Croatia and would appreciate you all do the same thing
2d NO NO, don't stop in the middle of the street to take a picture. Imagine if everyone did the same thing
3d NO NO, do not go inside of a house if you see the door open. It's someone's home.
4th NO NO, why are you so loud? We are not deaf. Please keep your tone down
Dubrovnik is a town where people still live and please respect it like that.
Have hakuna matata when you visit
Ich habe ein Video von dir gesehen wo du Deutsch gesprochen hast :D.
Euros are fine these days people, i'm in Croatia rn and Euro is the currency, nothing you cant buy with it now, kunas not needed anymore :)

It would be good if you used title like: Important things about Dubrovnik

I try :)
You can cut your expenses in half by walking a block out of the tourists areas.
Don’t forget to pull your hair back into a flowing, majestic Man-bun!
It's a ponytail. I'm old school ;)
My point is: tourist traps are quite the same all around the World. Overcrowded, over-priced, noisy, etc. I prefer the uietness of a less theatralized small town in the surroundings, with authentic people who are not overflowed and angry about tourism.
I wish I was there right now. The girls look pretty and blonde. I love the Franciscan and Dominicans and I love real monasteries. Even though I am of john de Baptiste.and jesuit. Croatia sure looks cool .
Back in the golden 80s we had lot of space with no f*** cruise ships 🤓
