As somebody who has opened a private practice and loves it (and am now expanding it) I say this life isn’t for everybody. It takes a lot of creativity, grit, and self confidence. Now with that said, I’m on the opposite end of this video. I truly cannot imagine ever returning to an agency or if I do not returning as a a director of some kind. I love the fact that I am creating a workplace for my clinicians that I have always wanted as well as one that they have always wanted. I love that I control the speed at which I advance services in my practice. Also, I love the fact that I have create a place for neurodivergent folks and their families to receive the competent care that they need because there are very few places that truly understand ADHD and neurodivergent people.

    Hey colleague
I love how you've summed up your reasons for not wanting to go into private practice. I'm from South Africa, and there ratio of employment opportunities versus the number of Social workers is so imbalanced, it's hard to get a job actually. Pretty sad. So many of us find ourselves having to venture into Private practice, just to make ends meet.
But my personal reason for private practice, is also related to my love for helping children, and that there aren't many black Social workers doing what I'm doing, so African child clients are able to relate to me and be assisted through their trauma, in their language and understanding their African context.
All the best to you too! ❤

Fellow social worker from Florida, got my MSW in May and I love it! The whole “not rushing to the next finish line” is huge for me now that I graduated. I’m working on my licensure but I’ve felt a lot of pressure to rush this stage and transition to private practice at the first opportunity! I’m in an inpatient hospital role and I also couldn’t see myself transitioning to private practice anytime, I love what I do with the population I work with!! I love your videos, thanks for sharing all your experiences xx

Thank you so much for this video!! As always, they are so informative and transparent. I am also a school-based therapist (MSW, in TN I can function in this role until I get licensed) at a high school and oh my goodness the honor it is to serve those kids!! Like you, I am also in an underrepresented population and it certainly matters when those kids see people who look like them. Once upon a time I considered private practice…that decision lasted for about 5 seconds!!😂 I’m just not built for that and would much rather be where I am!!! I always look forward to your videos and again, thank you for what you do!!
