I do my best to switch it up no expense spared. I had a few people that offered encouragement earlier on when I started cycling and honestly it helped me massively. Just turning up sometimes is an achievement.
There are some great vids of climbing Hardknott but this is my favourite. The commentary overlay (recorded outside!) and the words of encouragement are fantastic. Five weeks and counting until I face off with Fred.
Nice one, did the Fred a couple years ago, got to the very last section of climb, and the wind was blowing down it so had to unclip , couldn’t get going till the top, did it again a year later on coast to coast and made it up ..🔥🤜
I Love this video.. and I totally agree with the correct gear ratio - I have completely changed mine for this years Fred Whitton.. I've installed a 30t - 40t front and 11t - 40t rear.. I have tested it out on 20% inclines and so far it's been great.. slow but i didn't have to climb off and push.. Thanks for sharing brilliant
@@BeardonaBike Thank you Mucker.. I'm also undertaking this event to raise money for St James Leeds where I was fortunate enough to receive a liver transplant - I'm also doing the Lakeland Loop this weekend just to get a feel for the hard passes 🙂
Wow props to you Ian, all the best this weekend praying for good weather for ya. The Lakes has a habit of catching us out when we least expect it. Keep us posted on how you get on.
Great video and agree with everything. Unless you going for the kom the first bits a lung buster, steady and recover in the middle then try to dodge the cars on the 33% bit. For me the 33% was short and sweet and wasn’t that much of a challenge but the bottom section was
Well done again on your 2nd go at this hill.👍🏻I noticed you take the bends wide like what I do. I think when you take the shortest route on a bend its the steepest part of it. Thanks for another good video.
Great stuff, chapeau sir! I did this last week. I failed on the Fred a few years back- someone fell off in front of me😢. I had a full compact with 11-34 cassette - at my age (63) I’ll take any cheat I can get!
I hope I’m still riding at 63 👏👏👏 It’s particularly tough on the Fred with all the miles in the legs and people getting in your way. I wouldn’t call a 34 cassette cheating. Just getting out there to attempt it deserves a thumbs up. Are you going to go back and tick it off that’s the question?
@@BeardonaBike I live very close to pendle hill (nick o pendle climb), it would be great to see a vid on that, apparently it’s number 72 in the top 100, not very long though so possibly not RUclips video worthy lol.
Much appreciated Kev, it takes time to think about what goes into the commentary and recording it can also be a nightmare with kids running around etc. If somebody finds it useful I’ll be happy.
Amazing effort, well done 👏 I did it and then Wrynose as part of the Coast to Coast in a day event and was happy to get up them both. Now run by Sportive HQ, who run some great events. Highly recommend that challenge if you haven't done it. Seascale to Whitby. Enjoyed your videos of Maratona Dles Dolomites. Gave a great insight into the event, really helpful. Booked on that for 2024.
@@BeardonaBikeno .. don’t think I’ll get up there even on a ebike .. hats off to ya Mashaa Allaah hit over 200bpm I didn’t know that was humanly possible
Absolutely cracking video!! Well done dude. One comment if I may...it would be really interesting if in the overlay you had a percentage gradient graphic.
Well done, great effort. The camera does not give a good indication to how steep these climbs can be, but seeing your heart rate figures tells a better picture.
Nice one again - see you at the Fred 2024? Also - what gearing are you using? I'm changing mine ready for next year as I'm 36/30 for 'granny' and couldn't sustain the 400w needed to keep moving.
This bike had compact 50/34 with 11/30 cassette. If you’ve got an easier set up take advantage of it. I’ve seen people going up with MTB gearing during Fred.
@@BeardonaBike I'll be 52/36 and 11/34 - got a mate (on his TCR) running a 42 out back to keep spinning! I've managed it on a 34/28 on my old titanium, but was only 50 miles into a ride that time. Step 1 - more strength but change the gearing anyway!
I think Hardknott because the beginning saps your legs and then you have the last qtr to contend with. Where as Rosedale it’s the middle but that’s a killer and then it eases off. Have you done either?
Well done! I have yet to make it up in one go. I almost did a couple of years ago - I was almost at the top and had to unclip or fall off. It was a pretty windy day and I had clipped a stone. I'll have to do what you have done and just ride from Eskdale up then back down. This was a day when I almost made it up, ruclips.net/video/-z7vjFDMlqc/видео.html I will do it one day!!
It was definitely harder on Fred because I had the miles in my legs and people were falling off all over the place. That was my first time and I was nervous, 2nd time around you know what to expect and how to ride it. Deffo take it on again l, take your time and do not unclip, just think about the sense of accomplishment at the end.
Great video and brilliant commentary - thanks for sharing. It's on my to do list for sure.Well done by the way.
Please report back and let us know how it went.
Great words of encouragement/advice at the start, also liked the random phone box intro 😂

Some very kind words, save a few matches for this one and watch out for people falling off 🤪
Just discovered your channel absolutely love it now a follower great bunch of mates aswell 😀
Awesome, thank you! I presume you’re reconning for Fred?
I wish my friend I know my limits I cycle Cornwall but I'm wise enough to know up north is another level big respect to you and your mates .
You'd just done the climb, absolutely knackered, and the kid at the top says, "good luck". Bless. Sweet but funny.
🤣🤣🤣 I did giggle myself
This is the best video of this climb on the internet, and just what I needed. Actually feel more confident now I know what to look for.
Just remember the pain is temporary, keep pushing. The pedals that is 🤣

Might have done it when I was there, I can’t imagine doing it on the coast to coast though 🤮

That phone box intro! 🤣🤣 Great vid mate, the commentary works really well too. Well done getting up it again, impressive HR numbers!! 💪💪
Phone box was minging, can’t wait for your feedback after Fred 2024 😉
@@BeardonaBike Yeah, hitting that with 100 miles in your legs is going to hurt!

I think most people get fixated on the 33% section and over look the first qtr. Took me by surprise to be honest first time up.
Well done again on your 2nd go at this hill.👍🏻I noticed you take the bends wide like what I do. I think when you take the shortest route on a bend its the steepest part of it. Thanks for another good video.
In Fred I took the 33% bend on the inside because of a rider to my left. Definitely not recommended 🤣

Fantastic video....doing this on the Fred in a few weeks time. Very encouraging to see that it can be done.
Best of luck on the Fred!

11/30 on this bike could have done with a few more gears as I kept checking if there were any clicks left in the lever
Brutal! Wonder who the oldest person to do it was and how old. Would love to think I still had a chance to try.
