The only member of ZB1 that I think Mnet didn't really want is probably Ricky, and imo they would've wanted Park Hanbin in ZB1 over Jay. That's why he was immediately put into Evnne over Jay. However, I do believe this show was still made for Jay (and Wumuti and Donghun). He likely fits the vision of a vocal-focused boy group more than ZB1, who has a more specific almost flower-boy adjacent concept. ZB1 just happens to also be a vocally strong group because the top 18 were all very skilled.
I don't know the scale of audiences/voters for Build Up compared to BP. It's probably a lot less but man Jay ranking P01 domestically while competing with 38 Koreans is very satisfying.
