You can also buy a 2nd handle (shorter) that will turn the bottom piece into a stubby shovel (with the other handle for when you want a longer shovel).

Looks nice. Two things, 1) how sturdy once assembled? 2) how heavy is it? I use my shovel as a cane and a base to help me get up after digging. Would it be appropriate for these uses?
I would say to please email Casey directly at excaliburshovels.com - the weight of the shovel depends on the shaft length that you order. The joint itself is super strong. Again, please contact Casey directly. (I also use my Sir Kay Excalibur shovel as a walking stick sometimes due to my Vertigo. It has never let me down)
The connection locks solid in place like it isn't even there! Entirely made from high strength steel they are very light. The 31" that Liz has here weighs just under 3 lbs(2lbs 14oz). I use mine like a cane as well. Works very well as a cane.

Canuck's 31" Merlin D-Handle weighs 2lbs 14oz. A 40" Merlin D-Handle weighs 3.5lbs. They are very lightweight and fabricated entirely from aircraft grade steel.

I just got my first shovel, the predator pheonix, cost me $225 after everything was said and done to import it I could use a collapseable that would fit in my nokta backpack, the pheonix is just a tad to long to fit in with my legend I dont like the flat blade though, I got the Phoenix for the round blade

Just bought the new Stu Line from Kellyco. I like the breakdown and travel aspect of yours, but I think that joint will be a weak point ( vs. 1 piece ). I could be wrong.

How do you like the D handle I’m about to buy on of these shovels but not sure if I should get the D handle or T handle
The D handle is easier to carry in one hand for longer periods of time AND I get more leverage when prying something out of the ground with the D.
