Another fun fact from Russia: distribution trough the internet of the original death note was recently banned in Russia (it probably won't stop anyone from getting it from torrents but still). Now watching this vid i realized that netfllix adaptation is technically still legal.
When will people learn that anime and manga live action adaptations DON'T WORK. They will never work. Even Japanese have problems with turning anime into live action(Fullmetal Alchemist), they should just stick to the battle royal and horror genre...
the director (or however it was) saying that light is both a hero and villain depending on your point of view is hilarious to me cause the original manga's creators basically knew from day one "yeah, this guy's the villain of the story', or so I heard.
I hated the movie- I was yelling at the TV screen- They made Light an idiot. My friend watched death note (the anime) and the one reason she doesn’t like the movie is because they didn’t have the blondie in it- I forgot her name- Miss Mika or something.
I just got to say the only entertaining part about this movie is when light was screaming like a bitch when he saw Ryuk for the first time yeah it was cringey but it was funny
The only entertainment I ever got from this was Light screaming like a bitch when Ryuk made his appearance. Speaking of Ryuk, that actor is a fucking mad man whenever he is an antagonist. Love his work
One of the things that irked me the most was that writing Watari in the Death Note worked. Couple this with them trying to copy the FBI agent writing the names on a paper from the notebook more or less wholesale, means that the rule of needing the true full name and keeping the face in your mind should still be in effect in this adaptation. So the two scenes go against each other
Regarding your point about the gun man's death (16:47), it's a good comparison between the original manga/anime and the Netflix adaption in how they carried out a specific method of someone dying. Like how you explained here, the gun man was standing in the street for such a long period of time that it's impossible the truck driver wouldn't notice. While in the original Death Note, a biker named Takuo Shibuimaru was hit by a truck because he sped into oncoming traffic on his motorcycle. The driver who hit Takuo had literally no time to react, which made them hitting him possible without them being controlled. While the truck driver who hit the gun man had plenty of time to brake or swerve away.
10:05 okay, this is just a small thought, but I wanted to say it anyway. What L says here, to me at least, is just another trap. L has shown himself to be incredibly intelligent and to be one hell of a planner. It wouldn't be out of his reach to try to pull at the heartstrings to see if it made Light fold. Granted he could be genuine right here, but I just feel like he wouldn't allow himself to become emotional over anyone. I could be wrong, but I digress.
before the video I will make a preassumption: deathflix failed because the plot was poorly written, rules weren't properly set up (looking at physically possible), and the climax ended via lightflix quite literally writing the events which by the way as E;R pointed out it's extreme convolution, I wont get to that. also L being extremely stupid in the movie compared to the actual show for example L knows lightflix is 99% likely to be kira so why not do the wiretap+camera combo when james and light are at out. Personally what I would have done for deathflix would have been to set it many years after the original deathnote following the ideas of the oneshot, mainly ryuk purposefully chosing light turner due to taking inspiration from Light Yagami, Near just sending a replacement because he isn't remotely interested into the case and because light turner plays extremely safely so the L we see (and it should be extremely clear BY THE WAY) is fake or a fanatic who works alone. I would end the movie via fake L winning perfectly and then having Near come in contact with netflix L and giving him an offer for formal training to being a detective and there we go the plot now looks more interesting. if I were to make specific changes and change as little as possible to the main plot: 1) I would cut L's introduction and instead have the scene pan out to news of kira being reborn and then switch to the L emblem or a homescreen with same emblem. 2) have mia be the person that is most active to being kira and have mia straight out murder Lightflix in the finale while setting someone up with her charms to do the job for her while she has a solid allibi and then have said idiot die of a heart attack or suicide due to bullying she concocts 3) remove the entire end of the movie or alter the end of the movie heavily, have lightflix die instead of mia, have mia literally use lightflix as a tool similar to how live action light used (I forgot her name) during the 2nd(?) deathnote live action 4) enforce the obvious rules of the death note and keep the idea of criminals dying of a heart attack as light did that for 2 obvious reasons as light's goal was to kill as many criminals possible with the time he has so adding cause of death is a waste of time and heads and because it gives kira a signature so it is clear that heart attacks are done by kira's hands. 5) the ending can go 2 ways, L catches mia's dummy who promptly dies of a heart attack creating a bait for a sequel if they really want to or Mia kills L as the scene pans to her with shinigami eyes
I was not happy with this adaptation of one of the best animes ever. The only compliments I will give it is that Willem Dafoe was freaking perfect as Ryuk and I still laugh hysterically at the scene where Light screams like a little girl when he sees Ryuk for the first time. But again, those are my only compliments. The rest just has me going "why??".
What’s funny is I just rewatch death note and I think it’s funny that you make a death note video right I finished rewatching the show but great video and I remember watching the live action movie which is so bad
Ah yes I remember when my mom and sister saw the movie before the anime and they didn't like it. When I told mom about the anime and how I wanted to watch it with her since she doesn't really care for the animes I watch. (I'm rather fond of shojin myself MHA RWBY are shows I could watch anytime.) So when I learned more about Death Note I thought it would be a good anime for us to watch and I was right but I had to practically beg to get her to watch it because the movie was such a turn off. But the Netflix live action adaptations can work mom and I liked the Winx Club adaptation and hey it got me interested in looking into the original anime sometime.
Eh, I'd actually say that L's emotions were what caused his downfall in the original. He knew 100% that Light was Kira, but he wanted to win their game more than he actually wanted to stop Kira. However, he knew that he had already lost the game. That was what the foot washing scene was supposed to convey, I think.
As a kid, I always liked Alex Wolff better than Nat. His songs were better and he had a more enjoyable personality (though I guess that's because he actually _had_ a personality). Also -Gill- Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is the one saving grace of this movie.
The best way to show that death note can be done in live action is to just show people the actual live action movie of death note that was made by the japanese. It captured the feel and tone of the series way better.
An easy fix for some of this adaptation's biggest problems really would have been to just start with a whole new set of characters but in the same world that the story of the main series took place in, possibly making Light/Kira into a legendary Boogieman figure in the backstory of the movie. That way, there is no direct comparison to previous characterizations or plot events. Sure, people would inevitably compare the quality of characters but that could have been addressed in the work itself, having the shinigami of that part pointing out what a meathead the new Death Note user is compared to the last guy or what have you.
I've been wondering how Ace Attorney (2012) is viewed in terms of video game/anime adaptations. I watched it after watching RTGame's playthrough of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2-3 times and then finally playing the game for myself and thought it was pretty great. I'm not keen on what they did with Larry Butz and Redd White, but I really liked it. I'm not a fan of anime/manga, but thanks to RTGame, I've been too busy playing Ace Attorney games to do anything else for the past 3 weeks.
i watched the anime recently and thank god i never saw this movie. thanks for making this video. i was told that this movie sucked but thank god i saw this to know how much i avoided that disaster. great work magmakamen
This movie could have easily been the light shinigami if it actually was him from the end of the story, coming to earth and doing what ryuk did, seeing if he could find anyone who could live up to what he did with the death note, or just being bored as shit like most shinigami
They have NO motsuda and L is a polar oposite of his anime conter part in all ways. Ryuk is the only thing they put effort into and he not there but HA
Ok, I haven't read death note or have gone back through the rules of the death note in a few years so apologies if this is wrong, but isn't there a rule in the death note saying that while the death note can kill people, it can only directly kill those who names are written in the death note? You can't write X will drive a car and kill passengers A B and C and himself while crashing into a tree. Because that is not the intended person unless if you write A B and C also in the death note. However death can be influenced by the death note, you can drive someone to kill themselves based on the influence of the death note. Maybe I'm wrong, probably am, but if im right then the writers ignored the rules. And this ie why I will not watch this movie, death note is something that I really do like.
That just pisses me off more. Death Note is a series that I hold dearly to me as what got me back into anime and manga. To see them piss on the rules angers me. The rules aren't optional, it's how the book works. Guess I'll have to sit down with my brother and watch this to see how far we can get without cringing
While I don't completely hate this movie, the characters irk me, particularly Light and L since we're forced to then compare them to their manga/anime counterparts since they share the same names and same roles. We're supposed to sympathize and root for Light in this version since he's the underdog who's been bullied for standing up for other people (like Mikami), had his mother murdered (like Misa with her parents) and wants to make the world a better place (like Light Yagami before he crossed the line in [insert chapter/episode where you lost sympathy for him here]), and there is a market for underdog characters who have done some shitty things to try to improve their lives (Veronica Sawyer, Seymour Krelborn, Scott Pilgrim, etc.), but he comes across as a sanctimonious coward who only started doing what he does either out of petty anger or because he wanted to impress a girl, there's never really a moment where he's called out for his garbage behavior (at least not by anyone who matters according to the director), and (unless it's revealed in the sequel that's currently in development Hell that L killed him or that he's spent time in prison between films) doesn't face any consequences for his actions. And as for this L, while Keith Stanfield got the mannerisms down and I don't mind that L is a little more emotional and likely dealing with PTSD from the abusive training he received from the not Wammy House as a child, the writers seemed to have forgotten that L's not supposed to be some smart but eccentric amateur detective that happens to have money and "friends in high places:" L is supposed to be the greatest detective in the the world (and also the second and third greatest since he has two other detective pseudonyms), is very careful about who he allows to see him and Watari (often getting people like Naomi Misora to act as his "hands"), has access to highly sensitive information, and has A LOT of control and influence over the police (to the point that he all but owns them) and likely other parts of governments worldwide which has allowed him to get away with many things that weren't exactly legal or ethical (surveillance cameras placed in homes without consent, kidnapping, torture, setting up experiments like the Lind L. Tailor broadcast or the fake execution to get results, allowing professional criminals to walk free and continue committing crimes in exchange for their services in future cases, etc.). This became a secondary reason for Light to kill L in the anime, Light wanted L's power in order to keep the investigators from finding out he's Kira and to have access to more criminals to kill. The Netflix L either doesn't have that power or didn't think to use it against Light (surveillance was put in way too late to do anything, the people hired to tail Light are bad at keeping a low profile and got fooled by a kid wearing a top hat during the homecoming dance, and just decided to threaten Light with violence toward the end instead of something more subtle but still damaging such as interfering with aspects of his life [higher education, career, financial security, etc.] once he leaves high school) which, when combined with his intelligence being nerfed and him being more easily angered, makes him come across less as a genius detective and more like an angry man-child with a gun (which likely has unfortunate implications, but I won't get into it here).
I will forever say this, if Warner Bros of America had done this remake than we wouldn't even have had Ryuk. Every time a director for the WB project that included Ryuk they were no longer the director. Just be thankful this wasn't a Warner Bros of America movie it would suck WAY WORSE
I started rewatching Death Note for the first time in years. During the scene where Lind L. Taylor gets killed and L reveals that he was planning on broadcasting all over the place, but didn't need to because he got it on the first go in the Kanto region... I couldn't help but think that it wouldn't have worked if he didn't get it in the first go. Word would spread quickly that L wasn't killed on TV and with repeat broadcasts, L's plan would likely become obvious to Light. I think the original Death Note survives on a lot of coincidences and falls apart when you stop being impressed by its initial impression. I still enjoy it a lot.
To L’s credit, even he himself said that it was kind of a gamble. And given that the show takes place in 2006 (with the manga taking place in 2003), it would more plausibly take off then than it would’ve now given that the internet wasn’t as sophisticated as it is now.

You know it would be cool if they made a Death Note spin-off/sequel with more than one protagonist(?), it would probably take place after the reign of kiru/light, and (Not a big Death Note fan, but I know the basics) it could have new death gods and characters. And they can branch out from there.
netflix light is a shallow cringey version of actual light, without the smarts or the looks netflix L went from a japanese shut in geneus to a black jock guy and his character goes from smart and reserved while netflix L has no control over his emotions and is a completely different character...they also made misa even more useless did i mention netflix deathnote doesnt even follow the story?
6:24 In my personal opinion (again not big Death Note fan) I think light started with good (slightly egotistical/ego fulling) intentions, but at the end, he thinks he's a god because of the Death Note until his name is written in the Death Note by Ryuk (Presumably because he went insane).
15:47 I totally forgot Turner killed The Bully Yagami at least had Standards and didn't do something as Petty as killing a School Bully ( *Although the world will be better off without them!* )
Okay so what whether instead of that dumpster fire we got aka the movie... I was sort of thinking. What if maybe the Death Note was just dropped in America by Ryuk in the modern eara bescue again he was board. He wanted to see what happened inside of a modern day with social media and how people would react to Kira again. I mean that sounds like a decent idea. I mean it dosnet sound too good and having Ryuk wanted to explore modern day. Then I was thinking about how maybe he dropped it on another teenager named Light by coincidence as he thought maybe they would act the same or just a teen with similer qualities. Just a random idea sorry if it is bad lol and I agree with you in this video.

misa in the netflix live action film: is basically just 'eviller light', doesn't really do much beyond things the movie light refused to do and ends up becoming a final act twist villain for light to defeat but is otherwise unremarkable.
can I be kinda honest? I read that "You're the only friend I've ever had" scene in the anime as L b*llshitting Light
@@Mangakamen but I also agree with your point that L is way more emotional than people give him credit for
it can be interpreted a few ways, but there's a very interesting twistedness for L considering a horrible murderer he's determined catch no matter the cost to be his only friend and equal.
Well, the creator of Death Note confirmed that L was just lying right there
@@joseantoniovargas6548 yeah, I still think both interpretations are valid, but lying through his teeth to get a reaction out of Light just sounds like L, that little gremlin. I think Obah just really knows what kind of character he's writing.
@@victorianeechan Yup, that is why Death Note is so good
I was excited for how the movie would portray Misa when I first saw this on the front page of Netflix, just to see she's kinda just some random cheerleader and they removed her gothic clothing :((( They also remove the Shinigami eyes concept. Also these guys clearly didn't watch the anime when making this. And I'm surprised this movie didn't replicate the potato chip scene or when L reveals himself cuz both are unintentionally funny. At least they got Ryuk's voice and model correct.

*"This video has spoilers for Death Note anime and netflix"*
That's sweet of you to think anyone cares enough about that movie to warrant a spoiler warning.
If anything videos like this are how I see more of the Netflix adaptation, because when I tried to watch it, I physically starting convulsing, my brain wrecked with madness, and a rage one could not fathom, before I tend pause the movie, and literally go do anything else to forget my unpleasant experience.
I can only HOPE live actions never get their hands on Code Geass.
[edit] Also, I read the manga YEARS ago, but I still remember Light started out bored out of his skull and then went on a power trip when he found the book.
Oh god no

4:43 Fun fact from Russia: if he meant "kira" as a word it didn't exist in modern russian language, if he meant the russian name, its a female only name, and its origins and meaning in the past is disputed. It might have meant "sun" or "mistress" as well.
Another fun fact from Russia: distribution trough the internet of the original death note was recently banned in Russia (it probably won't stop anyone from getting it from torrents but still). Now watching this vid i realized that netfllix adaptation is technically still legal.
I thought as an adult, I would never have to deal with my anime getting 4Kids'd, again. I was wrong. This is my anime getting edgy 4Kids'd.
I would rather have a 4kids dub at least i could laugh at it unlike THIS abomination
You missed a serious point: DN lived off its cold tone of thrill while the Netflix writers had to dumb it down for the US audience - WITH SPLATTER.
Well it definitely works for teenagers who rate movies on the amount of gore
Can we just agree that Death note fanfics on Ao3 have better writing than this.
The best thing about this was the perfect casting of Ryuk. Loved defoe as him.
You think THAT's bad? Just wait until you see the live-action film of Fullmetal Alchemist.
He made a vid about it when it came out
@@PaintSplashProductions Ah shoot. Guess I've been living under a rock.
Well, it was a few years ago when the vid came out
Wait....THEY BASTARDIZED ANOTHER GREAT ANIME!? (One of the best ones infact)
He uses Fairy Odd Parents jokes because Light's last name is Turner like Timmy Turner.
Honestly, this movie is making me incredibly scared for the Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation.
And the Avatar one that isn't PG anymore
The fact that they're even attempting an adaptation is enough to scare me for the adaptation.
When will people learn that anime and manga live action adaptations DON'T WORK. They will never work. Even Japanese have problems with turning anime into live action(Fullmetal Alchemist), they should just stick to the battle royal and horror genre...
👀
If someone uploaded a "Netflix's Death Note but it's only Ryuk" video, please leave a link so I can watch him without paying for the movie.
Better yet, "Light Turner and Green Goblin vs Bully Maguire."
I hope if they decide to remake this, Ryuk is played by Green Goblin guy again. He was honestly the best thing in this movie.
While I didn't like the movie I will admit they nailed the right actor for Ryuk.
the director (or however it was) saying that light is both a hero and villain depending on your point of view is hilarious to me cause the original manga's creators basically knew from day one "yeah, this guy's the villain of the story', or so I heard.
I agree ryuku was definitely was the best part of the film
The deaths are so Final Destination
I hated the movie- I was yelling at the TV screen- They made Light an idiot. My friend watched death note (the anime) and the one reason she doesn’t like the movie is because they didn’t have the blondie in it- I forgot her name- Miss Mika or something.
Amane Misa.
In short watch the 2015 Japanese drama and movie trilogy from Japan
I recommend watching both despite the changes that were made.
I just got to say the only entertaining part about this movie is when light was screaming like a bitch when he saw Ryuk for the first time yeah it was cringey but it was funny
For me problem is that every charachter decited to drink bleach soo they were braindead.
The only entertainment I ever got from this was Light screaming like a bitch when Ryuk made his appearance. Speaking of Ryuk, that actor is a fucking mad man whenever he is an antagonist. Love his work
Willem Dafoe
@@crackerjack0349 thanks
Me: huh Ryuk sounds familiar *looks it up* OH MY GOD IT'S WILLEM DAFOE!!!
Same thing with the bus hijacker in Light's plan to uncover his spy's name.
L fakes his emotions. It's confirmed that he was lying in that scene.
@@nabeelnitro6447 Alright, nice. Thanks for the confirmation ^^
That's not death note, that's Diary of a Wimpy Grim Reaper
before the video I will make a preassumption:
deathflix failed because the plot was poorly written, rules weren't properly set up (looking at physically possible), and the climax ended via lightflix quite literally writing the events which by the way as E;R pointed out it's extreme convolution, I wont get to that. also L being extremely stupid in the movie compared to the actual show for example L knows lightflix is 99% likely to be kira so why not do the wiretap+camera combo when james and light are at out.
I would end the movie via fake L winning perfectly and then having Near come in contact with netflix L and giving him an offer for formal training to being a detective and there we go the plot now looks more interesting.
if I were to make specific changes and change as little as possible to the main plot:
1) I would cut L's introduction and instead have the scene pan out to news of kira being reborn and then switch to the L emblem or a homescreen with same emblem.
2) have mia be the person that is most active to being kira and have mia straight out murder Lightflix in the finale while setting someone up with her charms to do the job for her while she has a solid allibi and then have said idiot die of a heart attack or suicide due to bullying she concocts
3) remove the entire end of the movie or alter the end of the movie heavily, have lightflix die instead of mia, have mia literally use lightflix as a tool similar to how live action light used (I forgot her name) during the 2nd(?) deathnote live action
4) enforce the obvious rules of the death note and keep the idea of criminals dying of a heart attack as light did that for 2 obvious reasons as light's goal was to kill as many criminals possible with the time he has so adding cause of death is a waste of time and heads and because it gives kira a signature so it is clear that heart attacks are done by kira's hands.
@MangaKamen
I may have never seen the live-action Death Note, but it feels like it was made by and for emo people that get off to edgelord creations.
Tbh, the anime was edging on that same goth/emo demographic.

I like how they make L more villainess like he was
Even tho I haven't watched the Movie. I want my money back.
Talk about 2006 death note with the dub
I liked the Japanese version of the movie more than I liked the actual anime or manga.
To think the original creators actually liked this remake. Foolishness
If there's one good thing this movie did was get me excited about it and check out the anime which I love. I also got the whole Manga too.
i watched the anime recently and thank god i never saw this movie. thanks for making this video. i was told that this movie sucked but thank god i saw this to know how much i avoided that disaster. great work magmakamen

The only good thing about it is... Ryuk
He look in the movie was good and his reaction is mine to everyone who watched it for all time.

This movie could have easily been the light shinigami if it actually was him from the end of the story, coming to earth and doing what ryuk did, seeing if he could find anyone who could live up to what he did with the death note, or just being bored as shit like most shinigami
How to make your film 10x better, put William Defoe into it. The best bit of the film for me.

It’s been confirmed to have a sequel and it’ll be pretty interesting to have one

Death note was the first manga I read when I was in middle school.
I love timmy turner having a death note
The 2006 movie was good and it’s dub
when he said Netflix death note, I said: which Netflix movie the one where it's made in the USA or Japan?
Yeah, when L died in the original series, it just went downhill.
Not that I disagree with your idea that L could be emotional but Ohba himself stated that L was lying when he said that light was his friend
They have NO motsuda and L is a polar oposite of his anime conter part in all ways. Ryuk is the only thing they put effort into and he not there but HA
Do we even need to explain why its bad lol
Great video, although I'm kind of surprised that you didn't compare the Netflix movie with the Japanese live action movies.
Japanese movies are not that well known
"A smart character is just as smart as the people writing it"

You know it would be cool if they made a Death Note spin-off/sequel with more than one protagonist(?), it would probably take place after the reign of kiru/light, and (Not a big Death Note fan, but I know the basics) it could have new death gods and characters. And they can branch out from there.
netflix light is a shallow cringey version of actual light, without the smarts or the looks
netflix L went from a japanese shut in geneus to a black jock guy and his character goes from smart and reserved while netflix L has no control over his emotions and is a completely different character...they also made misa even more useless
did i mention netflix deathnote doesnt even follow the story?
netflix did not even succeed at making a film let alone adapting death note it even loosely
Some people say that Death Note is one of the most easiest to adapted
6:24
In my personal opinion (again not big Death Note fan) I think light started with good (slightly egotistical/ego fulling) intentions, but at the end, he thinks he's a god because of the Death Note until his name is written in the Death Note by Ryuk (Presumably because he went insane).
15:47
I totally forgot Turner killed The Bully
Yagami at least had Standards and didn't do something as Petty as killing a School Bully
( *Although the world will be better off without them!* )
It still had good stuff
