I've used the Fedora Xfce spin since version 28 with no real problems to speak of. I still have it on my backup laptop (in a dual boot with Windows so I can do my taxes once a year), but I moved my primary machine to Debian 11 Xfce (with the non-free network installer) because the constant kernel updates became tedious for me. (And I'm 75 and all those new-fangled things like btrfs make me nervous.) I have VS Code installed on both distros and it works the same, although language versions (e.g., go) are usually newer on Fedora. I added the VSCode repo to get it. Love Fedora but the constant kernel updates make you learn about downgrading kernels and freezing working kernels really fast. As you mentioned, it gets annoying. If Fedora had a LTS version, it would be my #1 choice.

I'd like a dual boot vid, and/or one that shows how to run off an external SSD. I really want to explore linux outside of a VM, but still worried about giving up my Windows setup.
Hey Veronica while you're at can you use two case pretty please 🙂 Case 1 - manual partitioning dual booting (with windows) with using the 2 drive (SSD+HDD) where you set SSD as the root partition and HDD as the home partition. We get fast system thanks to SSD combined with plenty of space on HDD for more user file. Eg a system having 120GB SSd & 512GB HDD Case 2 - dual booting with manual partitioned as most new window user would prefer this(atleast I do) as they use partitioned space from their drives for using linux as a 2nd OS so as they can oneday switch to it permanently if they choose , manual partitioned dual booting is more feasible because you don't loose data if done correctly

Have always been a Fedora + KDE user. Even when I try out some other distros, it is always their KDE variant except Solus - for which I used their in-house DE. KDE is leaps and bound ahead of its competition (for me) not because it is more 'Windows like' but more because almost all other DEs miss out of basic stuff. The most prominent case in point is Dolphin - I mean there is not one file manager which is even half as capable of it in Linux or Windows (can't say about Mac, never used it). As per Fedora team, they are working on an updated Anaconda Installer :-)

@@johncate9541 My daily OS is GNU/Linux for the past 12+ years, can't stand the keylogging/spying either but the military/DARPA created the internet and social media and has a back door no matter what you use. I come from military family.
Hi Veronica, great video as always, and I appreciate the deeper dive into KDE as a lot of the Fedora 36 content I’ve seen has focused on the gnome spin. One of the reasons I’ve tended to hew closer to Debian/Ubuntu-based distros compared to Fedora is my relative lack of familiarity with rpms vs deb packages. I’m a “capable beginner” with apt and apt-get but for command line futzing with rpm environments I’m much less familiar. If you could do a video comparing deb vs rpm based systems, that would be fun and interesting! Keep up the great work!
Conceptually they are very similar, just the formats are different. The rpm command is the equivalent of dpkg command and apt and DNF are functionally the same. So for apt-get install you type dnf install Updating all packages is dnf update instead of apt-get upgrade.
Adding onto the reply above, there's now a page on the Fedora Quick Docs detailing common APT command equivalents in DNF -- made it a lot easier to learn the latter package manager, as a relatively new Fedora user. 👌

Had some problems while running MX Linux 21.1 ahs but after watching your video, I installed Fedora 36 KDE, am happy to see that Fedora KDE has been running super smooth. I would have never looked at Fedora but when you said ''I think this distro deserves a lot more love from the Linux community and it does not get the attention that it deserves"; that is what inspired me to check out Fedora. I am glad I went to RHCSA classes about 6 years ago. I failed the exam at the time (this was before I went full linux) but I know how to use the installer and a bunch of other admin stuff so I was glad to see it was not changed too much. I have distrohopped for a while and kept coming back to Fedora all the time so I just stuck with it. groupinstall is a must-have.

I stared out with PopOS, then hopped around for awhile before I landed on Vanilla Fedora. While I liked Fedora, I just couldn't get behind Gnome, and it sent me hopping around again. Once I found out about Fedora KDE, I stopped looking. It is a pronominal distro! However, I agree...the Anaconda installer isn't the best, although I do like the ability to implement LVM and LUKS across the two hard drives on my machine. Great video, thanks!
As a recent Windows refugee who struggled to tolerate the klunky default Gnome that came with F35, it was a ginormous sigh of relief when I tried out the Plasma spin. Thanks Linux Mom! 🙂

Gnome is pretty awesome for trackpad use. With Wayland at least. But plasma does look gorgeous! You don't even need the spin, btw, dnf will readily install the entire DE. Gnome does seem to source its theme from the same settings file though, so changing your icons in one will also change the other.
Great demo of Plasma desktop for those who are using something else and aren't familiar with it. I'm actually running it under PCLinuxOS, but I'm not surprised Fedora does a good job with it.
Oh hello! Nice to hear from you again! I've actually been running Fedora 32 on my Dell PE R710 because Ubuntu jammy builds were making corrupt ISOs. Ended up installing KDE for just in case I want to use the desktop for a bit. It just flies through everything, despite the low spec GT620 I've got in there. (Yes, I threw a GPU into a server to sometimes use desktops on it. 😁)
Ten years ago I loved Fedora KDE but their current obsession with Wayland is a killer. I was excited by the reviews and hoped to that the hype was true this time. Alas it wasn't to be ... I couldn't log in to X11 with NVidia drivers. I was very disappointed, but the afternoon of frustration was not in vain. I realised that OpenSUSE proved more reliable on more modern hardware. No Wayland but the NVidia drivers worked and I could logon. Not as fancy but functional. And for development, Ubuntu 22.04 continues to be advanced and easy to use.
I recently came across your channel and it's a lot of fun! Very "sage Linux hippie" in the nicest and best way. Keep it up O, and I love the C64 episode too
Excellent review! I have been using Fedora 35 with cinnamon and I love it. I will give Fedora 36 KDE a try. On F35, I had issues with Wayland and KDE. Looks like F36 works better. Keep up the nice work :) Cheers!
I would like to see your modern windows dual boot method. You're very good at explaining things and I enjoy observing what methods you use during your work.
I have tons of hard drives in my computer. Some for storage along with USB, storage. But I chose which drive at start up because I have Fedora, Windows 7,8,10,11, Debian, Arch, etc. All installed to different drives ready to boot. I only keep my old windows around for certain programs that are just not supported good enough yet, like Davinci Resolve Black magic 18, few games that only windows run, Xbox Live PC. I have to get my daily dose of Linux or I get sick. It's my drug of choice. Hahaha. Just installed Fedora 36 a couple weeks ago to see what changed since 33. Really loving it and DNF. Great video, keep up the hard work. I know how much time you put into it.
I see you've got the iFixit manifest on your wall. Love that! I'm a board member of the danish Repaircafé organization with 70+ local cafées all over our small country (Find Repair Cafe - Repair Cafe Danmark). I see there's something similar in The Fix Studio in Minneapolis. We do offer users to get a "renewal" of their old computer by installing Linux on it, but so far I don't know of any, who has gone for it.

I laughed half way through it after that speed up scat singing, and I replayed it at .25% speed in RUclips settings and recognized it from the beginning of the video. I know you're doing a presentation here but that got a giggle out of me. Fedora was my first GNU/Linux experience and I keep coming back to see how it's doing, but I'm still a Windows codependent. If it weren't for Raspberry Pi or live Linux distros on a thumb drive, I'd still be frustrated with just the one OS. But Fedora sure has gotten a lot better though. I like this KDE Plasma Spin.

I installed Fedora just yesterday (dual boot with Win10) on my 6-year old laptop after testing Ubuntu 22.04 and now will probably try KDE, thanks in part to your video! I think I got the hang of GNOME and its minimalist style is very sleek but it seems KDE is more of what I was having in mind. I've already seen some custom themes I'd love to try... as a 25 years linux user, fedora is it (also suse is good) at work we don't like ubuntu (or any debian) so much, it has an annoying instabilities, after 3 years of fight we got rid of all them debians. if you never userd fedora, you're up to a treat. that said for beginners i do recommend mint, elementary and ubuntu. because they have the most desktop userbase and their more likely to find solutions to their questions. ps - you explain very well, I am going to point people to your videos... so thanks a ton for that.
Spot on Veronica! I threw the towel on Windows when they stopped supporting Windows 7 and moved to Fedora KDE. Been here since version 30 and have never looked back. Totally agree with KDE being the desktop environment that is easiest to transition to for Windows users. I don't really get neither GNOME nor the Mac-style dock 😅, and that's OK. I love it that Linux offers people choice and I love that I have found the right DE for me in KDE.
Amazing vide. I gave this one a space as I never tried KDA plasma spins before like it but trying gnome out too and I'm like the unique feel to the flow of it.
I've found that creating a separate grub partition and not messing with the windows boot partition makes dual boot with windows pretty "stable" as in "won't break for no reason" stable.
Great video! New sub here... I moved from Fedora 36 Gnome to KDE version, just installing the latest KDE Package from Terminal. It's awesome how accurate and faster feels, I mean I can run my daily tools without feeling the memory blows up or that annoying unexpected closing windows.
I got this video recomended by youtube. Your video is very professional. I upgraded my fedora in late december and early january installed budgie and kde my user experience with it was terrible. It was buggy system froze, then i couldnt boot the only good thing was the dark theme.

Thing with screensharing, it worked because you used the browser version. If you use actual applications like discord or zoom, because their clients don't support wayland yet, you won't be able to share the whole screen, only specific applications.
I keep both of those tools in their web-based iterations, mainly because I don't like cluttering my system if I can avoid it (I'm also not big on chat in general, but that's another story). When I do a deeper dive, I might try the full fat versions on the desktop, just to see how it goes!
Thanks! Trying out Fedora is on my to-do list as the last Red-Hat based distro I daily drove was Mandriva, about 15 years ago! What's the memory footprint like using Fedora with Plasma? I do love Pop OS but it can use up 4 or 5GiB with just a browser open.
I never have to run root but if you need to drop certain folders in the kde and plasma theme folders, you’re going to have run root to do it. Its protected to prevent inadvertent or deliberate messing around with critical system files but once in a while you have to modify them to configure the desktop the way you want it.
I like your videos. Please do more on Fedora KDE, as I too think it is under supported. If I can find all the apps I want, to work on Fedora, I'm going to switch to it from Arch. I love Arch, but I have to be careful when updating, so I need to keep making TIMESHIFT snap shots, for when it breaks the OS. I get the impression this happens much less often with Fedora, but you still get a rolling release!
I drifted away for Fedora years ago when the powers that be reduced the lifecycle to what I considered ridiculous. I understood what they were trying to do, but for me, moving over completely to CentOS made more sense (for RedHat based distros). I'm dealing with too many distros to have to upgrade Fedora all the time. So has the lifecycle changed?

Dual booting works like a charm on my win11+Arch laptop. No issues so far.All I did was partition from windows, install arch, install grub with os-prober enables, it picked up the windows install automatically,

kde plasma is the gui mac and windows wish they could be. Low memory, fast, innovative, THE MOST full featured. I have watched its development and have used it full on for going on 7 years now. now. it is my default when I want a gui. LOVE IT Fedora is kool too

I wasn't aware that Spins provided full ISOs of Fedora plus the specific desktop. I installed vanilla Gnome Fedora from getfedora, added KDE Plasma with 'sudo dnf group install "KDE Plasma Workspaces"', and then switched to KDE Plasma (Wayland) from the icon at the lower-right of the signon screen. Is there any difference between what you did and what I did? BTW: I tried and tried to get used to Gnome. But, the total inability to use any of my desktop space for anything useful just drove me nuts (that, and my mouse wheel scrolling very slowly in all my browsers).
It would love to see a video on dual booting with windows 11, since that is something I could not figure out how to do that properly because of the TPM and secure boot requirements (having a nvidia GPU certainty didn't make it any easier). Anyways your videos are awesome and l hope you get a lot more viewers and subscribers because you truly deserve it!
I've been trying to find a distro to replace Mint because it doesn't have a KDE version, and I don't like having to install it after the base install. I started using Linux with Redhat 5.0 or 5.1. This video leads me to think I should give it a try.
I love your videos! You are fantastic! I really like KDE, but for some reason istalling my printer (CANON)on KDE is a mission impossible. I can install on the same distro using any other desktop environment except kde
I used Fedora for about 10 years, and most of that time I have been on KDE. I never was a fan of GNOME 3. My main issue with Fedora since about 2019 has been that they switched to using systemd-resolved, which does not like ISPs that do not support IPv6 at all and caused DNS lookups to hang. I was unable to find any good fixes for this that would stick and wouldn't break something else. Finally was able to switch to a better ISP so I'll have to try it again.

If you can work with an orthodox file manager, you might want to try Krusader. It integrates with KDE very well and has a lot of useful features.

I've actually been running Fedora 32 on my Dell PE R710 because Ubuntu jammy builds were making corrupt ISOs. Ended up installing KDE for just in case I want to use the desktop for a bit. It just flies through everything, despite the low spec GT620 I've got in there. (Yes, I threw a GPU into a server to sometimes use desktops on it. 😁)

Totally agree! I haven't distro hopped in years since switching to Fedora KDE. The Fedora community could indeed advertise the other spins a bit more.
Ten years ago I loved Fedora KDE but their current obsession with Wayland is a killer. I was excited by the reviews and hoped to that the hype was true this time. Alas it wasn't to be ... I couldn't log in to X11 with NVidia drivers. I was very disappointed, but the afternoon of frustration was not in vain. I realised that OpenSUSE proved more reliable on more modern hardware. No Wayland but the NVidia drivers worked and I could logon. Not as fancy but functional. And for development, Ubuntu 22.04 continues to be advanced and easy to use.
I recently came across your channel and it's a lot of fun! Very "sage Linux hippie" in the nicest and best way. Keep it up

Excellent review! I have been using Fedora 35 with cinnamon and I love it. I will give Fedora 36 KDE a try. On F35, I had issues with Wayland and KDE. Looks like F36 works better. Keep up the nice work :) Cheers!
I would like to see your modern windows dual boot method. You're very good at explaining things and I enjoy observing what methods you use during your work.
I have tons of hard drives in my computer. Some for storage along with USB, storage. But I chose which drive at start up because I have Fedora, Windows 7,8,10,11, Debian, Arch, etc. All installed to different drives ready to boot. I only keep my old windows around for certain programs that are just not supported good enough yet, like Davinci Resolve Black magic 18, few games that only windows run, Xbox Live PC. I have to get my daily dose of Linux or I get sick. It's my drug of choice. Hahaha. Just installed Fedora 36 a couple weeks ago to see what changed since 33. Really loving it and DNF. Great video, keep up the hard work. I know how much time you put into it.

I see you've got the iFixit manifest on your wall. Love that! I'm a board member of the danish Repaircafé organization with 70+ local cafées all over our small country (Find Repair Cafe - Repair Cafe Danmark). I see there's something similar in The Fix Studio in Minneapolis. We do offer users to get a "renewal" of their old computer by installing Linux on it, but so far I don't know of any, who has gone for it.

That goofy old laptop is the exact model I'm using. I think it's awesome.
I laughed half way through it after that speed up scat singing, and I replayed it at .25% speed in RUclips settings and recognized it from the beginning of the video. I know you're doing a presentation here but that got a giggle out of me. Fedora was my first GNU/Linux experience and I keep coming back to see how it's doing, but I'm still a Windows codependent. If it weren't for Raspberry Pi or live Linux distros on a thumb drive, I'd still be frustrated with just the one OS. But Fedora sure has gotten a lot better though. I like this KDE Plasma Spin.

First video of yours I watched and loved it! I installed Fedora just yesterday (dual boot with Win10) on my 6-year old laptop after testing Ubuntu 22.04 and now will probably try KDE, thanks in part to your video! I think I got the hang of GNOME and its minimalist style is very sleek but it seems KDE is more of what I was having in mind. I've already seen some custom themes I'd love to try...

I'm on Kubuntu thinking of moving up Fedora for the semi-rolling nature it has.
as a 25 years linux user, fedora is it (also suse is good) at work we don't like ubuntu (or any debian) so much, it has an annoying instabilities, after 3 years of fight we got rid of all them debians. if you never userd fedora, you're up to a treat. that said for beginners i do recommend mint, elementary and ubuntu. because they have the most desktop userbase and their more likely to find solutions to their questions. ps - you explain very well, I am going to point people to your videos... so thanks a ton for that.

I threw the towel on Windows when they stopped supporting Windows 7 and moved to Fedora KDE. Been here since version 30 and have never looked back. Totally agree with KDE being the desktop environment that is easiest to transition to for Windows users.
I don't really get neither GNOME nor the Mac-style dock 😅, and that's OK. I love it that Linux offers people choice and I love that I have found the right DE for me in KDE.
Amazing vide. I gave this one a space as I never tried KDA plasma spins before like it but trying gnome out too and I'm like the unique feel to the flow of it.
I've found that creating a separate grub partition and not messing with the windows boot partition makes dual boot with windows pretty "stable" as in "won't break for no reason" stable.

I moved from Fedora 36 Gnome to KDE version, just installing the latest KDE Package from Terminal. It's awesome how accurate and faster feels, I mean I can run my daily tools without feeling the memory blows up or that annoying unexpected closing windows.
btw, is installing the Fedora KDE spin and installing KDE environment to a GNOME Fedora?
I got this video recomended by youtube. Your video is very professional. I upgraded my fedora in late december and early january installed budgie and kde my user experience with it was terrible. It was buggy system froze, then i couldnt boot the only good thing was the dark theme.

Thing with screensharing, it worked because you used the browser version. If you use actual applications like discord or zoom, because their clients don't support wayland yet, you won't be able to share the whole screen, only specific applications.
I keep both of those tools in their web-based iterations, mainly because I don't like cluttering my system if I can avoid it (I'm also not big on chat in general, but that's another story).
When I do a deeper dive, I might try the full fat versions on the desktop, just to see how it goes!

What's the memory footprint like using Fedora with Plasma? I do love Pop OS but it can use up 4 or 5GiB with just a browser open.
I never have to run root but if you need to drop certain folders in the kde and plasma theme folders, you’re going to have run root to do it. Its protected to prevent inadvertent or deliberate messing around with critical system files but once in a while you have to modify them to configure the desktop the way you want it.
I like your videos. Please do more on Fedora KDE, as I too think it is under supported. If I can find all the apps I want, to work on Fedora, I'm going to switch to it from Arch. I love Arch, but I have to be careful when updating, so I need to keep making TIMESHIFT snap shots, for when it breaks the OS. I get the impression this happens much less often with Fedora, but you still get a rolling release!
I drifted away for Fedora years ago when the powers that be reduced the lifecycle to what I considered ridiculous. I understood what they were trying to do, but for me, moving over completely to CentOS made more sense (for RedHat based distros). I'm dealing with too many distros to have to upgrade Fedora all the time. So has the lifecycle changed?

Dual booting works like a charm on my win11+Arch laptop. No issues so far.All I did was partition from windows, install arch, install grub with os-prober enables, it picked up the windows install automatically,
I'd definitely be interested in seeing a dual-boot tutorial!

kde plasma is the gui mac and windows wish they could be. Low memory, fast, innovative, THE MOST full featured. I have watched its development and have used it full on for going on 7 years now. now. it is my default when I want a gui. LOVE IT Fedora is kool too

I wasn't aware that Spins provided full ISOs of Fedora plus the specific desktop. I installed vanilla Gnome Fedora from getfedora, added KDE Plasma with 'sudo dnf group install "KDE Plasma Workspaces"', and then switched to KDE Plasma (Wayland) from the icon at the lower-right of the signon screen. Is there any difference between what you did and what I did?
BTW: I tried and tried to get used to Gnome. But, the total inability to use any of my desktop space for anything useful just drove me nuts (that, and my mouse wheel scrolling very slowly in all my browsers).
It would love to see a video on dual booting with windows 11, since that is something I could not figure out how to do that properly because of the TPM and secure boot requirements (having a nvidia GPU certainty didn't make it any easier). Anyways your videos are awesome and l hope you get a lot more viewers and subscribers because you truly deserve it!

I've been trying to find a distro to replace Mint because it doesn't have a KDE version, and I don't like having to install it after the base install. I started using Linux with Redhat 5.0 or 5.1. This video leads me to think I should give it a try.

I used Fedora for about 10 years, and most of that time I have been on KDE. I never was a fan of GNOME 3. My main issue with Fedora since about 2019 has been that they switched to using systemd-resolved, which does not like ISPs that do not support IPv6 at all and caused DNS lookups to hang. I was unable to find any good fixes for this that would stick and wouldn't break something else. Finally was able to switch to a better ISP so I'll have to try it again.
