The 1-on-1 coaching I did with Coach Kent helped me immensely with all of the following: 1. The pros and cons of accepting my first position with the State of California at a lower level, 2. The culture within the State of accepting jobs but continuing to apply for higher level jobs, 3. The “best practices” around completing the Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) required for the better jobs, 4. Pros and cons of accepting jobs not within my preferred geographical location I am grateful for Coach Kent and all the expertise he was able to offer me. 🙏
This video helped me write an effective SOQ. I did not even know what it was at first. Thankfully I found this video that gives away many great tips. I hope you will continue to create many valuable videos helping people to find state jobs!
Owen T, glad you found the video helpful. Our 1-on-1 coaching session probably didn't hurt either! Glad to hear you did well on your interview, got a job offer, and accepted a job at the State of California. Coach Kent - out! ;-)
Thanks for the videos! I consider myself a fairly eloquent and proficient writer. I have been applying for jobs with the Department of Cannabis Control for nearly a year now. I’ve applied for over 30 positions, 25 or so of them requiring a SOQ of 1 to 3 pages. So far I’ve had three interviews and been ranked second on a Deputy Director position. I always write paragraphs and papers with an introduction, body, and a conclusion. I am going to utilize the STAR format on my next one. Hopefully that will be the tool to get me across the finish line. Thank you.!
Here's hoping using the STAR method does the trick for you. I'm confident it will help! Expanding your target to include more/different departments and to include more/different classifications might be helpful also! ;-)
Thank you for providing this video. Looking into applying for several positions for the state of California and had no idea what an SOQ was until coming across this video.
Cali Coach Kent - thank you for this highly valuable information. I am just beginning my state job journey and I will be watching all your videos and some more than more once for sure. Thank you!
Hi there! Just wanted to take the time to thank you for the great tutorial! I really enjoyed it and will be using some of the tips like the S.T.A.R format mentioned.
Leisa Crownpoint, better late than never! The STAR method will help you moving forward. The STAR method can and will help you answer questions during interviews too!
Hi Kent, I recently found your channel and I have gotten so much useful info from it. Thank you! I am preparing an SOQ and I have read it very carefully to follow the guidelines stated under, special requirements. I am instructed to describe my education, experience, skills and qualities. I'm not quite sure my reply is what they are looking for? For example, I described my education in paragraph form by listing the schools I attended, degrees attained, examples of classes relevant to the job I'm applying for, etc...I did not use dates I attended each school to avoid reading like a resume. Do you have any advice on how I should approach this question? Thank you!
Thank you for this video! It gave me an idea what to write, although I'm still confused a little. The job that I am trying to apply to doesn't have an specific questions only this: "A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is Required. The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ is not a resume or cover letter. The SOQ will be considered the first phase of the hiring process for this position. If your qualifications are competitive, you may be invited to an interview. The SOQ should be typed and not more than two pages in length, not less than 12-point font and single-spaced. The Statement of Qualifications should include descriptions of your skills, knowledges, experiences and educations/trainings that will help you to be successful in this customer service position. Resume and/or cover letters DO NOT take the place of the SOQ. Applications received without an SOQ or SOQs that do not follow the statements above will not receive further consideration and will be excluded from the hiring process. " -wondering if I still need to put it in numbers or can I just create my own paragraph explaining my qualifications and examples? I am applying for Employment Program Representative Position for EDD. Thank you so much!
This is a very standard SOQ and follows the format I discuss on my SOQ and on the "How to Ace the Interview" video. Simply put: Just write a four paragraphs that fit into the 2 pame length requirement. One paragraph on each of the following: 1. Knowledge, 2. Skills, 3. Experience, and 4. Education. I call it the KSEE response item (for SOQs), and KSEE question (for interviews). You'll see this again, and again if you apply and interview for numerous State jobs. Related the KSEE paragraphs to the Duty Statement essential functions, and the Desireable Qualificaitons listed in the Job Posting and you'll be well on your way to acing this SOQ requirement. Hope this helps! Coach Kent - out! ;-)
Hello! I am just at the beginning stages of applying for an Associate Governmental Program Analyst position, specifically under the State Teacher's Retirement System. Just doing a little research as I start my SOQ. The questions I am being asked are: What interests you about this position? What skills do you believe are most critical for this type of position? Describe your experience with case management and meeting deadlines? Do you think a paragraph or so for each question is sufficient? I have a good resume, but not related to a state job. In the past, I've worked mostly as an executive assistant, recruiting and HR. Do you think it would be well received if I relate my past work experience to these questions? TIA!
Please watch my SOQ video 2 or 3 times and read the Duty Statement 2 or 3 times. If you're still having a problem writing the SOQ; then I suggest you contact me for a coaching session (kentdills@yahoo.com). ;-)
Thank you for this super helpful info for writing the dreaded SOQ! Some agencies get cute and call it a Supplemental Questionaire (SQ) and want in funky format like 11 point versus 12 point.
Amazing video, thank you so much! The job I am applying for recommend that I address the following questions: 1) Describe your experience analyzing and evaluating data. Use concrete examples. 2) Describe your experience working with stakeholders (federal, state and county agencies, advocates, legislative staff, community based organizations, etc.) 3) Describe your experience working as a part of a team. Applications will not be accepted without a Statement of Qualifications. Applications will be screened based on experience. Do you suggest that I divide my SOQ by question like your example? Should I reword the question before including it as a subsection title?
@Kendra Flin, in response to your question above, 1) Yes, I would divide the SOQ into the 3 sections and copy the question (not reword it) to use to section off each of the 3 sections. The 3 sections don't necessarily be equal in length. You may have more or less to say about the different sections. Just make sure you fully address each question. Hope this helps, Coach Kent out!
Thanks so much for this video. Could the SOQ also look like a mixture of paragraphs and a resume-style breakdown of jobs and duties? For the job I'm looking at, they ask 4 specific questions. But they also say this: "The SOQ must be typed, titled 'Statement of Qualifications', and each response must be numbered and list all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. The SOQ must not exceed two pages in length and must not have font smaller than 11-point." In order to list "relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment dates, and duties performed," I think it would look cleaner to break that information down resume-style instead of in paragraph form.
Sure. I've used a mixture of paragraphs and bullets in an SOQ before. You just need to make sure the use of bullets is appropriate (for example, when listing a set of tools used or when listing process steps, etc.) No right or wrong here. Do what makes sense! Hope this helps! ;-)
Hi Coach Ken, great videos by the way. I'm preparing an SOQ with three questions and a two-page limit (1.5 spacing). How would you suggest I answer "Please provide your academic, professional and job experiences as they relate to the Essential Functions performed by an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA), as described in the Duty Statement." Thanks in advance.
Well, I could write the SOQ response for you; but, that's not what I do. Sorry. I suggest you watch the SOQ video over again until you understand it to the point where you feel ready to write your own SOQ response. If you need help via a 1-on-1 coaching session - email me at kentdills@yahoo.com and I'd be happy to help.
you are a great coach , thank you . Please make videos about each department culutre and how to be succesful and what to avoid, also the pay range how can you get into C etc...
Seth Kang, Glad to hear you get most of the jobs you interview for and you use the STAR method for the situational questions. This is good support for my recommendation to use the technique! Much appreciated sir! Coach Kent - out!!
@@sethkang4410 , Thanks for the question and suggestion. In my humble opinion, the resume is one of the least important parts of applying for and getting hired by the State of California. If you watch my video on applying for State jobs, you'll see that I mention the resume is not even one of the required submittal documents for a large number of State jobs. This is because most (if not all) of the resume info is duplicative/redundant to the information that is required on the Standard State Application form. I hope this makes sense and helps you sir! Coach Kent - out! :-)
Hello Coach Kent, Thank you so much for your thorough videos about how to get a state job. Will you please share with us your strategies and techniques in preparing for an interview? Respectfully, CL
Chau Le, thanks for the positive feedback. Much appreciated! As for prepping for the interview, I plan to do a video on that topic soon. In the meantime, best way to prep. is to read the position's Duty Statement and practice answering scenario-based questions regarding the tasks in the Duty Statement. I recommend using the STAR format (Situation, Task, Actions taken, and Results) for formatting your response. It's a good format for responding to scenario-based questions. You should also prepare to answer a question something to the effect of "Please tell us what in your education, experience, skills, knowledge has prepared you for this position". That question comes up in almost every interview. Hope this helps! Good luck!! Coach Kent - out!!! ;-)
Thank you for the video. Is it okay to write questions first and then write answers by numbering them, or it is exact rule that, one question one answer and so on?
Hi Kent - happened upon your channel and this video, specifically, as I am looking around for tips on SOQs. Thanks for your tips :) they're very helpful. It's good to know that there is most likely a good manager at the helm when an SOQ is requested. Have you ever interviewed and/or worked with anyone transferring from UC public service to State? I passed the AGPA exam based on my (15 years) UC experience and am just now starting to put in applications for State positions.
Nope, never interviewed or worked with anyone coming over from the UC system. Sounds like you have plenty of experience for an AGPA position though. Good luck on your hunting! ;-)
Trying to write my SOQ right now and I'm finding that the questions for IT require a whole lot of explanation and very hard to condense everything down to two pages. The reason I'm struggling with this is because the questions make note of the duties in the duties statement and this position I'm applying for has a very long list of duties (about 2 pages worth)
Send me an emal (kentdills@yahoo.com) if you'd like some coaching (either 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour - your choice) and my educated recommendations/suggestions on how to tackle this make or break step in the hiring process. ;-)
This sounds like a dumb question but where do you put your name on the SOQ? I didn’t see your name in the header of the example you shared. I just applied to a position with HCD and put my name in the footer. There was no instruction with that in the job posting so I just guessed, but now think I should have put it on the top
Follow the SOQ directions on where to put your name. If not given any, I always put my name and the applicable Job Code (JC) # at the top. Don't fret though; if you put it in the footer and they didn't specify where it should go then you were still fully compliant. Good luck on your applications! :-)
Good evening, Kent. Thank you for the informative video. I am in the process of writing my SOQ now, for an office technician position. There is only one question listed "Briefly describe your background, experience, and education that make you the best qualified candidate for this position". I notice for most SOQS there are multiple questions. How would you suggest I go about framing my SOQ so that it isn't too short in length? Hope this makes sense.
@Drippd_in_hon3y, I wouldn't worry about the length being too short; just make sure you don't exceed the maximum length. That said, I'd start with an outline consisting of one lengthy paragraph for each of background, experience, and education since that's what they asked you to address. Try to use words and phrased directly out of the Duty Statement as they apply to your own specific background, experience, and education. If you can make each of the paragraphs fit into a narrative/scenario construct with a good beginning, middle, and end - you should nail it! Only do that if it makes sense. Hope this helps!! Good luck on your journey!! ;-)
Hey Coach Kent, thanks for this resource! I have an unrelated question but I believe you are well suited to answer it. I am looking to join a specific state agency, but it may take a while for them to post a job at my expereience level. I am considering taking any state job at the AGPA level in the interim. Would it be frowned upon to take an AGPA role and then shortly after leave for my prefered role if it becomes available? I imagine that departure date may be anywhere from 2-6 months from my start date.
Sorry for the late reply. I didn't notice this question when it came in. Now to the answer/recommendation: I HIGHLY recommend applying for any job with the State of California sooner rather than later. Even if in means starting at one job and then applying, interviewing, accepting another offer later (say the 2-6 months in your question/scenario). This is because: 1. It will get your start or beginning of service clock/timer started. This allows you to vest in your retirement account sooner than later. 2. IMHO - it's easier to get another job at State of California if you're already working for the State. Numerous reasons for this. I hope this helps. Start applying ASAP and best of luck!
Cali State Job Coach - thank you for this video. I was confused about SOQs and your video clarified it. My question to you is the following: on the SOQ, there is a question about supervising or leading a team. I have vast experience in that space; however, for the past few years, I haven't managed direct reports. Is it ok to use examples from 10 years ago when I directly managed or should I use recent examples of being a team lead? What are your thoughts? Thank you!
All experience counts. I'd use the supervision experience (and document that in the SOQ) that most relates to the essential functions of the job you're applying for. Hope this helps!
Hi Kent,Amazing content. You are truly helping people dispell a lot of myths. My question: Need some help..I have a college degree in mechanical engibeering. 9+ years in business analysis, project management, change management, team management ,managed budgets, teams, clients etc in private sector.. 7+ prominent IT certifications.(ITIL,six sigma) Really first time considering applying,Am I shooting too low with AGPA..what other levels could I apply to? Based in temecula so open to apply to Riverside, ssn beenardino, san diego, LA and orange county.l slthough expand my horizon fir telework. Any departments I could be good fit for? Any classificarions that will truly look for my skillsets?
AGPA wouldn't be too low; just that IT Specialist 1, 2, 3, would be a much better fit for your Business Analysis and Proj. Mgt. skills and experience. Almost all departments have needs for IT folks. Hope this helps. Reach out at kentdills@yahoo.com if you want/need some 1-on-1 coaching! ;-)
Hi Kent, thanks for all of your help and resources. I'm currently working on a SOQ and I'm confused about "Please write your Name, Job Control and classification in upper right hand corner" - what is the job control and how do I find that within the posting?
You can find the JCN (or Job Control #) at the top of every Job Posting. It's also available on a search results page when searching for jobs on CalCareers. Every Job Posting on CalCareers has a unique/individual JCN. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much for your video. For one of the jobs I'm applying for, I need to describe how my experience and skills meet the qualifications to perform the functions for the position (in one page). Would you please let me know whether I need to use STAR for every single point given on the "Desirable Qualifications"?
Hi there, what’s the best way to go about writing a SOQ that is it asking any specific questions, but is general in nature. Is it similar to a cover letter- expressing Interest and qualifications? Thank you!
General in nature is good. Leaves you room for improvisation. I recommend answering the specific questions using exact terms they're using but "fleshing out" the general nature. Tell a story. Use the Scenario, Task, Actions, Results (STAR) method if applicable. Example: While I was working at so and so company, in the role of such and such, I was tasked with doing X, Y, or Z. In order to accomplish the task, I took A, B, C actions to accomplish the task AND to overcome blankity blank hurdles or issues. My supervisor thanked me for the successful accomplishment and gave me a Letter of Commendation too! Hope this helps!
Respectfully, the answer is in the question and is much too long to answer in this video comment. That's just the truth. If you've watched my SOQ video and read the specific SOQ requirements listed on the specific Job Posting, and you still have questions and/or you need some 1-on-1 coaching, send me an email (kentdills@yahoo.com).
Question: I've seen countless examples where SOQ's are placed on top of the resume. How do I know if its expected my resume includes a SOQ section? Many application processes just ask for a resume, but it seems like including a SOQ in a resume is a current trend. I haven't seen many examples of SOQ's as a separate document, I assume you include name & contact info somewhere on top of this document as well? FYI you've explained the SOQ as a singular document very well. Thank you.
Eric Korbly, thanks for your question. It gives me a chance to be very clear on the fact that the SOQ is not part of your Resume. Not included at the top, the bottom, or in between. It's a totally separate document that addresses key questions or concerns about the advertised job/position. The details needing addressing are included in the job posting. The specific questions or concerns are almost always 100% related to the key tasks stated in the job/position Duty Statement. The SOQ and Resume are so separate and different that you'll often see that only one or the other (SOQ or Resume) is called for as a required application submission in the job posting. Personally, I'd rather ask for and get an SOQ submission than a Resume submission. In my humble opinion, most (if not all) of the Resume information can be found in the State Application. So it's kind of redundant to ask for the Resume as part of the application submission. Hope this help sir! Coach Kent - over and out. ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach Kent, that is the most clear & comprehensive explanation about what an SOQ is that I’ve come across. Now i feel 100% clear. Thank you very much for taking the time to respond so thoughtfully.
Thanks for doing these videos. Really helping me with the process. Question for you. I am a seasoned employee in the business world with a BS and can be a fit for an AGPA position. If I was hired for this Classification should I expect to be hired at the lowest end of the pay range.
Yes. You should expect to be hired at the low end of the pay range and move through the pay range from bottom to top in about 5 years. This would be in addition to any cost of living increases that are bargained for. Your significant expertise could put you in line for a promotion to a Staff Services Manager position as well. Best of luck to you Wes!
IMHO, if you have to use any AI tool (including CHAT GPT) to create your SOQ, then you probably shouldn't be applying for the job. Because it means you don't really have the base-level knowledge, skills, experience, and education (KSEE) that is necessary/desired for the job. One caveat to add; if you're using the AI tool simply to help with style and/or formatting - that would be the only exception and would be OK. Otherwise, if you're using the AI tool to help add to or complete the content, I highly recommend against it. All this said, if and/or when you're asked about the core KSEE in the interview, it will be obvious if you do or don't have the KSEE required. So why waste everyone's time (your's, the Hiring Manager's, and the other interview panelist's)? Hope this makes sense and helps! ;-)
Sorry for the late response A V. I've been traveling by car and not following up on RUclips for about a week. That said, to answer your question, it is possible to apply for Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA) positions without a degree. They like folks with degrees and/or 4 years of college but you can substitute actual work experience on a year-for-year basis up to three years I believe. This also applys to other classifications besides AGPA. You just need to read/review the classification specifications which are usually linked in each specific job posting/advertisement. Hope this helps and best of luck in applying! Coach Kent - out! ;-)
Im overthinking how they want the template to look. How do I know if they want all three ; name , date and SOQ at the top of the page. Do I put my name and date on the top left hand and the SOQ in the middle of the page?
Just do what the SOQ instructions say to do. If they don't address what to put at the top, I'd go with SOQ - JC# - Your Name. Don't worry about adding the date. Hope this is helpful!! ;-)
Hi Kent, I'm a new grad and watching this video helped me with better understanding an SOQ! I know that every SOQ is going to be different but I'm a bit on edge with what mine is asking: "The SOQ must be typed, titled “Statement of Qualifications”, and each response must be numbered and list all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. The SOQ must not exceed two pages in length and must not have font smaller than 11 point. SOQ is mandatory, maximum of one sentence. 1. How many years of software engineering experience do you have? (You can include paid/non-paid, and education experience with any focus: backend, frontend, full stack, etc)" It states "maximum of one sentence" for just one question. I might be overthinking this but will my SOQ literally be this question with a one sentence answer? I would love to thoroughly explain my experiences for them to recognize but I don't think it would fit one sentence as asked. Thank you so much!
kyoungah lee, as you came to find out - I don't have a "website" per se. I have this RUclips channel (Cali State Job Coach) and email (kentdills@yahoo.com). Thanks for your email. I already responded. Coach Kent - out! ;-)
How should I fill out the Notice of minimum qualifications review. They said to focus on the minimum requirements which I do have I’ve interviewed twice and the hiring manager wants to give me the job but I received the letter. It’s not really clear as to what exactly they are asking. Just said to write based on Three years of professional analytical experience performing duties in one or a combination of the following or closely related areas: budgeting, management analysis, personnel, planning, program evaluation, or policy analysis. I explained what I do in relation to these areas and used the verbiage from the duty statement. Would you recommend anything else?
IMHO, this happens in the case of when a junior/low-level Classification and Pay Analyst is given the task to verify you meet the minimum qualifications of a job. The Hiring Manager wants to hire you and has asked HR to validate your Minimum Quals but the new Analyst isn’t 100% sure how to do that themselves. So they’re asking for your help. Just reiterate your experience doing all the areas of analytical work you’ve done showing well more than the 3 years they’re asking for your help in documenting. Basically, your response will be put in their file for Covery Your Ass (CYA) purposes. You’re near the end bro. Just do this and you should be golden! Hope this helps!! :-)
@@calistatejobcoach yes this does help. Thank you. I guess it’s how they want the information, is it better to just provide a list or give examples or use verbiage from the duty statement.
Thank you for this information. How much do hiring managers weigh exam score vs SOQ responses? Is the exam score more important than the SOQs? Thank you!
SOQs are much more important in my humble opinion. That's why most Job Postings state that the SOQ is acting in place of a first interview. As far as exam scores go, they are simple a "go or no-go" thing that HR departments check for when determining the Minimum Qualifications for the specific classification are met. To my knowledge, exam takers just need to rank in the Top 3 ranks/tiers of the exam to be "qualified". Hope this helps!
@@calistatejobcoach what do you mean top 3 ranks? What does that mean? For example, someone who scores in 70th percentile will be considered for position the same as someone in 80th or 90th percentile ? Thanks in advance!
@@DondiniMontefusco , each exam taker is given the results of their exam when finished. The results include the following: 1. Pass/fail, 2. Score (e.g. 95%), and 3. Tier or Rank (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). It's my understanding (I'm not an HR expert but a functional Hiring Manager), as long as exam takers pass the applicable exam and rank in the top 3 ranks then they are what's called "reachable" or fully qualified for being hired into the classification. I hope this helps. I more info still needed; please reach out for my 1-on-1 coaching service! ;-)
Hey Kent, your advice got me 4 job interviews with the state. However, I haven’t been able to land a job yet. Can you give some pointer on interview questions? What hiring managers are looking for? The interview are very different most other companies.
Sarah, Sorry for the delayed response. Drove up to Long Beach from Mexico (4 day trip) and am taking flight lessons in Long Beach to get my Private Pilot Certificate (AKA, License). That said, the best way to prepare for interviews is to carefully read the applicable job's Duty Statement, and prepare answers for scenario-based questions (related to the various Duty Statement tasks) that could/should come up in interviews. Plus, almost all interviews include a question that goes something like, "please tell us how your education, experience, skills have prepared you for this job". Prep. an answer to that question as well. Congrats on getting the four interviews. Keep on interviewing and you should be getting an offer! I hope this helps. Coach Kent - out! ;-)
The job posting says I should describe how my experiences make me a qualified candidate based on the job description stated in the Duty Statement (no other supplemental questions I need to answer). However, the ca gov website's "How to Write a Statement of Qualifications" page tells that applicants should also write about how they meet the "desired qualifications." For the job i am applying for, both (duty statement's job description & desired qualifications) are pretty similar, but still, they are different. In this case, should I focus on writing about how I can handle the job based on the duty statement's job description? Or should I still try to address each desired qualification? Thank you!!
J, good question. I have an opinion on this but too long to post here. It's something I share with my coaching clients. Send me an email (kentdills@yahoo.com) for more info. ;-)
Hi Kent - One of the questions on the SOQ for an office assistant position I’m applying for is “What skills do you believe are most critical to be successful in this position?” Should this be formatted as a list?
Yes, a list; but don’t use a bulleted list as it takes up too much space. Use something like…….”The most critical skills for an office assistant are as follows: skill 1, skill 2, skill 3, etc”. Hope this makes sense. Best of luck!
I need help with the SOQ questions. I don't see any at all. Am I missing something as to where they are located? I'm lost. This is for the an AGPA position.
You need to read the Job Posting carefully. It will specify if an SOQ is needed or not. If it specifies the SOQ is needed; then it will have an area specifying what the SOQ requirements are. Sometimes all they as is something like “Please tell us how your knowledge, skills, experience, and education - related to the Duty Statement’s tasks/functions - make you a good fit for this job. Then it’s up to you to read the Duty Statement and relay how you’ve done the tasks/functions in past jobs. Hope this helps! ;-)
@@Juice.21 Yes. Oftentimes they will ask questions off the SOQ in the interview and they are looking for you to be able to provide similar answers. Not “word for word” but similar content. Hope this helps! :-)
Nice video series, thank you. I am from a region of the country that does not use the SOQ model; however, I am considering a CA state position that does. There are no formatting criteria or specific function questions. The only direction is to explain how your background, experience, knowledge and skills qualify you for the position. Beyond using those broad areas is an organizational tool do you have any thoughts on approach, examples in each area, length, etc.
How long does it take from final filing date and time of application before I would expect to get an interview so that I know my application was effective?
Between 1 and 3 weeks is about average. Faster wouldn't be a bad thing though. Slower might indicate something went wrong in the process (e.g., the Hiring Manager got sick or went out for personal reasons, etc.). Hope this helps.
Hi Kent, I'm capable of writing a great SOQ, once I understand the complex duty statement! The duty statement of a job I'm applying for has a section titled, "Special Requirements." The box "Conflicts of Interest" is checked. Do I need to understand this and address it in a SOQ? Also, are the "Essential functions" on the duty statement the duties or are the duties the really general things at the top like "gain skills related to specific tasks"?
Erica, the SOQ topics/questions almost always focus on the Essential Functions enumerated in the Duty Statement. The SOQ requirements will define whether or not you need to address anything else such as the Special Requirements or Conflicts of Interest. Hope this helps. Best of luck in you job hunting with the State of California. Coach Kent - out!! ;-)
Hello Coach Kent, thanks for the detailed explanation. I have 15 years of working experience in banking and finance, but I decided to change my field. I just graduated from Sac State, college of computer science. I am searching IT related jobs right now. Does it make sense for me to apply for non-intern state positions? What's the best strategy for entry level candidates like me? Thanks.
New to the Cal State jobs journey- would it be possible to share information with you to get a better understanding of where I should focus? Much appreciated.
coach kent, looking for some 1on1 coaching for a CEA application i'm putting in next week. hopefully i can get in touch with you to arrange it. how does that work through this channel?
If the question asks describe your education and experience performing the duties of xyz, do you still break it up? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
The best answer I can give to your question is that it depends. How many oher questions are there on this particular SOQ? If this was the only question, I would break it up by the first 4 or 5 tasks (probably restated as delineated on the position's Duty Statement). Then I would write the 4 or 5 responses addressing my education and experience for each. This would still be a good way to demonstrate the ability to write clearly and consisely and the ability to answer the specific question. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Please watch the video and your question will be answered. Reach out to me at kentdills@yahoo.com if you need additional 1-on-1 coaching. Coach Kent - out! ;-)
Huy-Huynh, my next video in this series will be on how to ace the interview (including prepping for it). In the meantime, if I was you, I'd study the position's Duty Statement and the posted Minimum and Desired Qualifications. You don't need to meet all the Desired Qualifications - hopefully several though. You do need to meet all the Minimum Qualifications. Try to picture scenario based questions for the Duty Statement tasks. Use the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, and Result) to formulate answers the the hypothetical Duty Statement-based questions. virtual friend, the lowest level Accountant job with the State of California is Accountant Trainee. For your convenience, I've cut-and-pasted the Minimum Qualifications for that classification below. Minimum Qualifications Accountant Trainee Education: Either I Equivalent to graduation from college, with specialization in accounting. (Registration as a Senior Student in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.) Or II Completion of a prescribed professional accounting curriculum given by a residence or correspondence school of accountancy, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, cost accounting and business law. Or III Completion of the equivalent of 19 semester hours of course work; 16 hours of which shall be professional accounting courses given by a collegiate-grade residence institution, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, and cost accounting; and three semester hours of business law. (Persons who will complete work requirements outlined under II and III above during the current quarter or semester will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.) Successful completion of the State Fund Accounting Course administered by the Department of Finance, shall receive credit for three semester hours toward the required accounting courses. The 1-on-1 coaching I did with Coach Kent helped me immensely with all of the following:
1. The pros and cons of accepting my first position with the State of California at a lower level,
2. The culture within the State of accepting jobs but continuing to apply for higher level jobs,
3. The “best practices” around completing the Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) required for the better jobs,
4. Pros and cons of accepting jobs not within my preferred geographical location
I am grateful for Coach Kent and all the expertise he was able to offer me. 🙏

Expanding your target to include more/different departments and to include more/different classifications might be helpful also! ;-)

The job that I am trying to apply to doesn't have an specific questions only this:
"A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is Required.
-wondering if I still need to put it in numbers or can I just create my own paragraph explaining my qualifications and examples?
Coach Kent - out! ;-)
That STAR technique is good. I’ll use it for my upcoming applications.

Hello! I am just at the beginning stages of applying for an Associate Governmental Program Analyst position, specifically under the State Teacher's Retirement System. Just doing a little research as I start my SOQ. The questions I am being asked are:
What interests you about this position?
Glad it was helpful!
Sometimes they don’t give questions, they just tell you to refer to the linked duty statement and write the SOQ based on that.
Amazing video, thank you so much! The job I am applying for recommend that I address the following questions:
1) Describe your experience analyzing and evaluating data. Use concrete examples.
2) Describe your experience working with stakeholders (federal, state and county agencies, advocates, legislative staff, community based organizations, etc.)
3) Describe your experience working as a part of a team.
@@calistatejobcoach also don't forget to use single space, 12 point Ariel font no longer than 2 pages :-)
Thank you for your videos! I just submitted my application today. Fingers crossed.
@dudeanson Did you end up getting a job with the State?
Thanks so much for this video. Could the SOQ also look like a mixture of paragraphs and a resume-style breakdown of jobs and duties? For the job I'm looking at, they ask 4 specific questions. But they also say this:
"The SOQ must be typed, titled 'Statement of Qualifications', and each response must be numbered and list all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. The SOQ must not exceed two pages in length and must not have font smaller than 11-point."
In order to list "relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment dates, and duties performed," I think it would look cleaner to break that information down resume-style instead of in paragraph form.
Sure. I've used a mixture of paragraphs and bullets in an SOQ before. You just need to make sure the use of bullets is appropriate (for example, when listing a set of tools used or when listing process steps, etc.) No right or wrong here. Do what makes sense! Hope this helps! ;-)

Hello Coach Kent,
Thank you so much for your thorough videos about how to get a state job. Will you please share with us your strategies and techniques in preparing for an interview?
Respectfully,

Good luck!! Coach Kent - out!!! ;-)
Yes! Please do a video on the actual interview! Thanks Kent!
Thank you for the video. Is it okay to write questions first and then write answers by numbering them, or it is exact rule that, one question one answer and so on?
I HIGHLY recommend the one question & one answer pairing. Much easier for Hiring Manager to read. ;-)

Good luck on your journey!! ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach That was very helpful. Thank you!
This is because:
This is really helpful.

Hey Coach Kent, do you think using CHAT GPT isn’t wise for doing SOQ’s and can they detect it in written stuff that’s submitted?
Hope this makes sense and helps! ;-)

Hello, Coach Kent!
Is it possible to apply without a college degree? Thanks for your videos btw! They're very helpful and informative.
Coach Kent - out! ;-)
I have an interview on 17th September is there any way we can schedule a one on one before that?
Im overthinking how they want the template to look. How do I know if they want all three ; name , date and SOQ at the top of the page. Do I put my name and date on the top left hand and the SOQ in the middle of the page?
Just do what the SOQ instructions say to do. If they don't address what to put at the top, I'd go with SOQ - JC# - Your Name. Don't worry about adding the date. Hope this is helpful!! ;-)
If they don't say, put it whereever you want - right, left, or center!
Hi Kent, I'm a new grad and watching this video helped me with better understanding an SOQ! I know that every SOQ is going to be different but I'm a bit on edge with what mine is asking:
"The SOQ must be typed, titled “Statement of Qualifications”, and each response must be numbered and list all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. The SOQ must not exceed two pages in length and must not have font smaller than 11 point.
SOQ is mandatory, maximum of one sentence.
1. How many years of software engineering experience do you have? (You can include paid/non-paid, and education experience with any focus: backend, frontend, full stack, etc)"
It states "maximum of one sentence" for just one question. I might be overthinking this but will my SOQ literally be this question with a one sentence answer? I would love to thoroughly explain my experiences for them to recognize but I don't think it would fit one sentence as asked.
Thank you so much!

However, the ca gov website's "How to Write a Statement of Qualifications" page tells that applicants should also write about how they meet the "desired qualifications."
For the job i am applying for, both (duty statement's job description & desired qualifications) are pretty similar, but still, they are different.
Hope this helps! ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach understood! Thank you!
is it okay to repeat answers from SOQ in a interview if they ask?
@@Juice.21 Yes. Oftentimes they will ask questions off the SOQ in the interview and they are looking for you to be able to provide similar answers. Not “word for word” but similar content. Hope this helps! :-)
I'm doong these right now. 3 question response but am second guesaing myself om the first one. How may i contact your direvtly?
Simple. Just send me an email at: kentdills@yahoo.com
David McClintock, can you please share the Job Control # (JC #) for the open position you're talking about? Thanks! Coach Kent - out! ;-)

Thanks.
So, do you have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science? Or what? ;-)
@@calistatejobcoach Yes, I got my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Sac State in may 2023.

Good luck!

Kent-I have an AGPA interview. What can I study/focus or study some interview questions?
Huy-Huynh, my next video in this series will be on how to ace the interview (including prepping for it). In the meantime, if I was you, I'd study the position's Duty Statement and the posted Minimum and Desired Qualifications. You don't need to meet all the Desired Qualifications - hopefully several though. You do need to meet all the Minimum Qualifications. Try to picture scenario based questions for the Duty Statement tasks. Use the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, and Result) to formulate answers the the hypothetical Duty Statement-based questions. This will help you prep for what should be all or most Duty Statement task related interview questions. Hopefully this helps. If you need some 1-on-1 coaching, I can help with that too! Hello sir. May I know about the accountant job in the state of California if we have bachelor's degree in history.
virtual friend, the lowest level Accountant job with the State of California is Accountant Trainee. For your convenience, I've cut-and-pasted the Minimum Qualifications for that classification below.
Minimum Qualifications
Accountant Trainee
Education:
Either I
Equivalent to graduation from college, with specialization in accounting. (Registration as a Senior Student in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.)
Or II
Completion of a prescribed professional accounting curriculum given by a residence or correspondence school of accountancy, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, cost accounting and business law.
Or III
Completion of the equivalent of 19 semester hours of course work; 16 hours of which shall be professional accounting courses given by a collegiate-grade residence institution, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, and cost accounting; and three semester hours of business law.
Looks like with your degree in History, you'd fall into the Or III category of meeting the qualifications.
I hope this helps! Good luck in your search!! ;-)
FYI: You can review the Minimum Requirements for the whole range in this job class here: www.calhr.ca.gov/state-hr-professionals/Pages/4179.aspx
