Elliot Page Says 'Juno' Fame Almost Killed Him

- Elliot Page covers ‘Esquire's summer issue, where he gets candid about his mental health struggles at the height of his ‘Juno’ fame. The actor recalls not being ok in his early to mid-twenties and the pressure of conforming to gender expectations becoming coming out as transgender in 2020.

This message is so dangerous. Being a tomboy and hating dresses has nothing to do with being transexual.
YES.
Exactly
Agreed
Except Elliot actually truly is a trans person-? Not just some “tomboy who hates wearing dresses.”
It even mentions how he’s fully transitioned: Top & Bottom surgery complete. So idk if I’ve missed your point then? Cuz I’m a bit confused.
And even with that fact aside-
It’s still pretty evident what the message was meant to be about… Which included his journey up until the transition & then gives an example of a past traumatizing “norm” he had been faced with by being forced to wear clothing for the opposite gender that he identifies with in his heart.
So if anyone in this response thread could possibly fill me in on what y’all mean by that?
I've always thought that Page was awkward, now after this interview I feel like boy or girl he's still just as awkward.
Yeah, nothing has really changed here... well, a couple of things...
I have felt the same. I think it was because the couple of roles I saw as. Ellen were the same type - annoying attitude, and it turned me off. I felt that this was the real person coming through.
Bruh I used to have the biggest crush on Juno 🥲
Yea she looks sickly now imo
Yeah, that's what these transgender people do not understand. It is not about being a man or a woman, they are just not comfortable with being in a human body. I do not blame them at all, the truth is the human body was designed wrong, or wrongly genetically modified. I fancy neither gender so to me gender change is stupid! Just do your best to live in the body/gender you were born. The body is fragile enough without putting it through unneccessary surgeries to overcome. Elliot Page like many transgender place too much emphasis on gender, masculinity, and femininity, let us see how much happier she will be at being a fake male. I agree with her that being a feminine woman sucks!...long hair, dresses, high heels, make up etc. But by becoming a fake male is not the answer. She could have dialed down the femininity and stopped wearing dresses, high heels, long hair makeup. Not all women adhere to feminine code of conduct and they are not lesbian either. Just be comfortable in your gender and ignore masculine or feminine conduct. I understand this might be hard for people to comprehend.
If she wasn't comfortable playing a female character, why did she accept the role of a female character
Omg it’s he stupid idc if I get hate
Sorry stupid is harsh
And she certainly didn’t have trouble cashing THAT check, did she??!!

I mean no disrespect but didn’t he audition for the parts knowing what the parts were about… it’s not like someone forced him to audition and keep playing the roles he claims made him have panic attacks for the way the character was to be dressed.
Exactly what I thought.
I get why he did it though. But then again, he did audition for that role before he came out. I’m glad that he did come out. No role is worth hiding who you are.
no hate what so ever but it is possible he was feeling dysphoric with out knowing the language used to to describe his feelings even if he auditioned there is pressures of womanhood for trans men/trans masculine people (like playing a pregant woman in a show for example, wearing dresses)like you feel this type of obligation to perform womanhood prior to realizing ur trans and not having the words to describe the kind of discomfort you feel performing that. not saying thats his exact experience but that is a common experience for trans mascs (myself included) not all ofc and some even enjoy feminity/pregnancy/dresses etc but i hope that explains it a bit for ya!!

You’re so desperate to disprove his experience. I mean no disrespect, but maybe figure out why that is?
It's almost like butchering ones self doesn't help one's mental health
Yes it’s a symptom , after they actually go threw with the mutilation they always regret it , here’s some more information about BID
Body integrity dysphoria (BID, also referred to as body integrity identity disorder, amputee identity disorder and xenomelia, formerly called apotemnophilia) is a mental disorder characterized by a desire to have a sensory or physical disability or having discomfort with being able-bodied beginning in early adolescence and resulting in harmful consequences.[1] BID appears to be related to somatoparaphrenia.[2] People with this condition may refer to themselves as "transabled"
It seems everyone is looking at this as powerful or being true to one's self. Its getting her much praise. But this is nothing more than self hate. You don't like like or accept yourself so you change into something more acceptable for the people. This is the exact opposite of accepting yourself. Yet, society will try to confuse the mass and say embracing the gender change is actually accepting yourself.
Hear hear! ❤
Exactly. So-called gender confirmation surgery is gender-denial and self-harm.
Now he looks and sounds more unwell than ever
Elliot seems way more anxious and miserable than Ellen. Just my observation.
I agree! I got anxious and worried watching him speak in this snippet of interview.
he seems like a jittery, trembling mess.
Might be a bit harsh to say, but trying to be male while being built like that is something that personally would cause me a lot of cognitive dissonance and headache.
I've been male for all my life and I would definitely not want to be the same size as an average 12-13 year old as an adult male, that in regard for the height and physical development.
@@lumina1re329 well , especially being an actor. When he was Ellen definitely looked and could pass for a female anywhere from 25 to maybe 39 so roles were easier to get. Now he can probably only get very limited roles so I wouldn't be surprised if he has to try a different approach to making a living. Maybe not, I don't get how that will work now.
I think on camera interviews, when you’re an introverted person like him, can be very hard to do at any time. Add to that the subject matter of having to discuss something immensely personal and private, with basically the world and he’s not likely going to be all upbeat and projecting confidence.
Is it me or does it seem like Elliott still isn't happy ?? Not just based on this interview but also in other pics ...etc
I think he's probably still got a lot to work through, all the years of depression, reckoning with all the work he did in the past, as well as his issues with food and body dysphoria. That's a lot to process and i feel like will probably take years of therapy. i think those things don't just completely go away when you transition after several decades of having to live in a way that made you so unhappy. I think with time, help and getting used to his new life, he'll hopefully be happier. But i think that's just the reason he still seems unhappy. Can't say I understand most of what Page went through but one thing that really resonated with me is how Michael Cera could wear slacks and sneakers to the premiere but they had to wear a dress and heels. Like they said, lots of cis women don't like dressing like that and they shouldn't be pressured to. Heels are so uncomfortable.
Yeah, and? I’ve worked jobs where I had to wear dress shoes but but female coworkers could wear sandals and open toed shoes… in the blazing heat. Sometimes we have to do things and wear things we’re not comfortable in. It’s called being an employee and getting paid. There are rules!
Plenty of women are uncomfortable with the ways we're expected to dress but that doesn't mean we're not women. Page seems to think that being uncomfortable with sexism means Page isn't a woman, which means Page thinks that women are comfortable with sexism.

Yes, yes very moving and pc but privilege absolutely does Equip one with the financial tools to seek help and address mental health, and white privilege ensures you don’t get shot by police while you have a “movie worthy” freak out because some Karen witnessed it and immediately called the cops. White privilege affords you the opportunity to vent your “ struggle on Oprah while she looks on with empathy for someone who profited while female and will continue to profit as a male or a green et should he choose to be. Leftist ideology creates such Frankensteins, don't they?
I have no feelings either way about Elliot's decision to transition. A person is a person is a person to me, no matter their sex, sexuality, colour, religion, whatever. Everyone deserves happiness, we all make mistakes, some of those mistakes cause us undue suffering because we thought we'd be able to handle whatever it was that came with the choice we made. In this video I don't hear Elliot blaming anyone for the suffering he went through due to his own choices, only him trying to explain the turmoil he went through due to them. I don't care enough to follow his every tweet or post so I don't know if there's a reason so many people are castigating him, but I want to reiterate: everyone deserves happiness. Money doesn't make you happy, in fact it cheapens everything. Fame doesn't make you happy, anecdotally speaking it is a double-edged sword.
I guess all I meant to say was we all seem to be sneering and discounting what he says because of irrelevant facts. I believe we should hope for happiness for all the people of the world, and if we don't contribute to that, we should, at the very least, not go out of our way to impede it and instead cause unhappiness.
Just my two cents.
I do agree that we should not go out of our way to hurt people. I also hope Elliot starts living by this as she has gone out of her way on numerous occasions to accuse people she disagrees with, on political and social issues, of being all kinds of unsavoury things re: Chris Pratt or her Jussie Smollett rant on Colbert, just to name a few.
@@GroudFrank I wasn't aware of those incidents, but I agree totally with you. It does become harder to wish happiness upon someone who is willing to attack and besmirch (sorry for the antiquated word, it just seems appropriate) people they disagree with, especially when their voice is particularly omnipresent in society and respected to a degree by their peers and the general public. Hopefully he can get his head around our view at some point soon as I am convinced it is the path of less resistance through life and is good for your mental serenity.
On a personal note, I found myself disagreeing entirely on a number of issues with people on the right that began pretty much when Trump was elected, but after a couple of arguments that got me nowhere, I started trying to see things from their point of view and instead of arguing from the outset, tried to find common ground with the person I was talking to. Being able to find the areas you agree with someone you're politically opposed to, trying to approach the conversation with empathy, and discussing calmly what it was that we disagreed upon turned out to be somewhat of an epiphany, in that I realised that if the person you're talking to knows you care about the things that bother them deeply and you're making a genuine effort to understand where they're coming from, there *is* no hostility, and you are actually able to converse in a way that makes both people feel heard and their opinions valid. There is no better way to discuss politics. Slinging insults, shouting, belittling, or in Elliot's case going on TV and vilifying people do literally nothing to advance the conversation or make progress. Nothing. All that happens is that both people defensively double down on their beliefs and views and you end up making undecided people gather around your target in unity, due to the ugliness of your own behaviour and the pity it engenders in people for the other person.
Sorry, I banged on and on a bit there. I guess the point is that you get nowhere screaming talking points into the face of people you disagree with, and having the goal of changing someone's mind is unrealistic. Empathy, understanding, patience, compassion, and a genuinely altruistic outlook can, however, broaden the view of someone and hopefully make them want to understand where you're coming from, too. Then the ability to enact change that benefits both parties becomes possible, and people are more willing to compromise. Some of the friendliest, most enjoyable and rewarding conversations I've ever had have been with people whose political views are the polar opposite of my own. Since then, I have to admit, I have become much more centrist politically as the far left and right become more and more unbearable. I find a lot of like minded people are slightly left or slightly right inclined, and are at odds with the fringes of their political party to a greater degree by the week.
Anyway, I have crapped on and on for ages, so apologies for that. Like I said earlier, my mindset now is just to try and contribute to the happiness of others, or at the least, try not to impact it negatively. A lot of people are like that nowadays, moreso than even a year or two ago, and that's great in my book.
Thanks for replying, and I don't blame you if you didn't read all of this; apologies again for the verbal diarrhoea. Take care and all the best, Frank :)

you can never see a rabbit shape in the clouds if you have never yourself seen a rabbit in your life. similarly a person who wants to change their gender has to have seen and had experiences with the opposite gender. Hence the external factor plays into this and the way they experienced it plus how their brain is naturally made to function.

Yeaaa she’s in for a rude awakening in years to come, though I doubt her life was that hard to begin with. I'm not that invested in Page's life--if transitioning will make him happy, have at it--but I would like to point out that these interview clips were from before he started hormone replacement therapy. So if he still looked "not okay," that's because he wasn't physically transitioning yet. In his more recent interviews, you can see the changes in his voice and bone structure from testosterone treatments, and he looks a lot happier and healthier.
You’re so right. My transgender sister was much happier after starting the hormone therapy that began the physical transition. To face every day in a body you’re profoundly disconnected from is awful.
If it makes them happy but I still feel that she may change her mind one day I hope she did a lot of therapy to prepare her for such a life change
Exactly, he looks in his own skin now. I'm so happy for him
@mimi his bone structure looks the same, I think it is only the testosterone
Still looks and sounds like a woman trying to be a man. Let’s be honest. That trans voice is usually unconvincing sounding like that. Most people wouldn’t think “this person was born a man” if they met Elliott.
Is internal misogyny not a thing anymore?
I’m a woman and I don’t wear dresses, my hair is short I look how I want. But don’t have the feeling my body is a problem. What happened to just being a tomboy, and be okay with that? I really don’t understand that so many people need to trans their body. You make a healthy body sick with hormones for what?
this is the point, gender and sex is a spectrum. you're on that spectrum too and that's cool, it's good. the other options are good too
It’s also reductive to the feminist movement to say, “well women have long hair and wear dresses” yet that seems to be the level of depth of most trans people. I always want to ask trans people, “what do you mean when you say you don’t feel like a man/woman? Are those feelings exclusive to that gender?” It all feels extremely shallow. I think juno has extreme depression and needed to talk to a psych, not a surgeon. Either way, I wish the best for her.

Being trans is not included in the dsm5 diagnostic book. Not a mental illness according to the medical, scientific, and academic communities. Stop trying to control people's personal lives and worry about your own
Your body, your choice but being a guy is more than being shirtless just like being a woman is more than wearing cosmetics. Why must they attempt to prove their gender by embracing gender stereotypes? Ridiculous
Always an interesting discussion. My question would be: Who (aside from the very artsy/eccentric; those we'd probably see as "weird") doesn't embrace stereotypes in their day to day lives? Why are you wearing what you're wearing right now?
@@Swayzee68 Because it's comfortable. Half the people who meet me assume I'm a lesbian because of what I wear. That's their problem. Being a woman is simply being born into the reproductive class of human. Nothing more. Being a woman is not performance or decoration. Nor does lacking in femininity stop you from being a woman.
Yes, you're right that being shirtless is not what makes a man a man, and wearing makeup is not what makes a woman a woman. A woman can be shirtless, and a man can wear makeup. Some people (trans or cis) feel more comfortable conforming with gender stereotypes. Some don't - there are plenty of trans people who don't conform to gender stereotypes - the same with cis people.

A lot of comments are saying "boo hoo get over it. You were rich and famous." But he was closeted. There is a lot of pressure that people put on you in the industry. A lot that people don't see. And when you get to the height of fame that Elliot got to for Juno you have publicists, managers, agents, directors, etc. are telling you how you should dress, act, and things you should say. There are even classes you have to take now basically etiquette classes. If you are in a film or tv show that is getting famous they train the performers on how you should act in interviews and just walking around outside of set. When you are late teens early twenties, not comfortable in your body, and closeted... it takes a toll. And a lot of times especially back in 2007ish if you even hinted at beings gay or trans it could be career ending and the people around you tell you to keep quiet. So while I understand someone saying "get over it" when you have fame and are rich...times were different back then. We are still growing from those times and finally being more accepting. Much better now then how it was back then which is why more people feel comfortable to come out. Imagine if you couldn't freely be who you wanted to be without being judged, losing your career, losing your livelihood....you would not be ok. I hope he is at peace and is finally happy.

Just teach them to accept people no matter their differences. :) To be kind even when it's hard to understand, because frankly it has nothing to do with them. Everyone's struggle is different and what might seem little to you could mean the world to them.
For girls imagine growing up being told you have to look pretty or sexy to have value. that men won't find you attractive, and you are treated like that's the only thing that matters when you care nothing about that, are disgusted by being sexualized and catcalled, and just want to be valued for your mind. just want to get your hands dirty, or act and be seen as men do. get the same freedom to not be appearance based as men do.
Or a male, who has an affinity for fashion or art, is gentle and emotional and kind.. but gets treated like a disappointment for engaging in his passions, told to "man up" when he gets emotional, gets beat up for being feminine. imagine looking in the mirror and hating what you see.. wishing so desperately that you were born with a different chromosome so you can be the person you are inside? does that sound small?
