For some unknown reason this makes me dream of the 1970's and being a kid again with my late brother. We often fought like cat and dog, but there were times when we would have done anything for each other. It moves me to tears, but it's brilliant, thank you.
This is quite good. I'm a musician and a big fan of The Who. Considering what Pete did to create the original, this is actually as close as I think you could get. Well done!
Thanks so much! Usually when I hear people attempting this sound the pulsating sound is a bit too short. I had the same problem with all the gear I tried to create this sound. With the JD-Xi the sound decays just the right way thanks to slicer effect algorithm.
or just get the actual real split tracks of the original version which are available quite easy to find, they've been included on some of their deluxe cd's on the bonus discs before.
Thanks alot! Actually it's the slicer effect on the synth that is the essence on this one. This sound does not require arpeggiator at all. Pete probably used a square wave LFO to control the volume on the pulsating rhythm. I haven't been able to this well on any other synth mainly because square LFO usually cuts the ending of the sound too harshly. On the JD-Xi the slicer effect with the right variation left the right amount on tail to the sound. What an awesome synth! What boards do you have?
Really nice! Compliments! I think I'm going to try to use it with my one man band (I've never used a backing track in 31 years of doing this). If I get it to work I'll send you a link and give credit. Rock on...
Actually, there on Pete's version, there is no reverb on the right channel, but almost all reverb on the left (where the parting is). Here's the way I recorded it ... ruclips.net/video/x-jiXpS22sg/видео.html
Would you mind if I used your Synth Track in my cover version of this tune? And of course I would give you credit. And of course all for fun. I have a home studio, drums, guitars, bass, Hammond, and all me. I could never figure out how to get this synth sound and also the keys before the drum solo. I am so impressed with what you did here.
Thanks for the compliments! Using the synth track is ok by me 👍 Would be awesome to hear other takes on this epic track! Here's my full band version: ruclips.net/video/7X0PhzutJvM/видео.html
Keep working on it. You'll get it perfect sooner or later. WE used to do this as a cover,..in the early 80s,. I think it took quite a few months to get it....especially the last part of the song. I think I wore a cassette player out going over and over note by note trying to figure out the notes. WE now know he just played the chords and his synth actually changed it to stacatto notes. Back then we had to play it chord by chord. I think you did better than most of the idiots nowadays trying hard. A few of the "known" big bands have tried to cover it,....and it's embarrasing to even watch them. They are not even remotely close.
Could you please help me with the settings? I bought this synth because of this video. I would be happy to pay you. I would rather spend money than weeks or months trying to figure it out. I have the tone but still don't know how to get the flange/phase effect over the tone
Hi Jason! Really appreciate the fact I inspired you to get the synth. I found a way with the JD-Xi manager to get .sys-files from the patch and the effect chain so it could be do-able. Email me haahokas@gmail.com and let's discuss more :)
Really inspired by your video. I just ordered a used Roland JD-XI (with no manual) to duplicate what you have done on yours. Any hints/help to make it easier for a non-SYNTH person who plays just a little bit of keyboard on a few choice songs my band performs
Awesome, JD-XI is so good synth! For a non synth player i'd say start with the real time controllers and effects and figure out what they do to your sound. The analog part is an excellent playground to get into synthesis 👍
@Spacemartini So to get the We Dont Get Fooled Again "sound" I see 70s organ. and the "on" lights on the Roland are: Octave UP. Digital Synth. Keyboard. Cutoff LPF. Rate Pitch. Effects 1-Compressor. Effects 2-Slicer. Delay. Reverb. If I turn all that on and make adjustments will I be close...or is there some hidden menus/settings deep in the synth that I need to dig up a manual off the internet. Thanks for the help. Paul
@@amradio557 The slicer effect was the key feature on this one. You'd have to change the slicer variaton in the menu. That was probably the only menu diving feature on this patch.
@@Xanaduum it is not using the arpeggiator. The pulsating effect comes from Slicer. Think it was variaton 2 (change that from the menu) that does just the right effect.
There's a guy Gig Performer, who demos how to do it. Might be worth a look..? Either way, sounds good... IMHO, he doesn't have the reverb, whereas your's maybe doesn't quite have the depth of sweep...? I dunno, I'm a guitarist, the synth stuff is a little over my head, BUT I would say, keyboard amps weren't a thing for another decade back then, so it's very likely the original was played through a guitar amp. I've had spectacular results putting a B3 plugin through an AC30 amp sim with a Leslie cab sim., when I did a backing track for Whiter Shade of Pale.
Thanks, nice discussion👍 I believe Pete did just plug the Lowrey organ to synth which created the pulsating and the filter sweep. I do hear my sweep could be a tad stronger.
Looks like simply 70s organ patch, then slicer and lfo. The lfo control on this is annoying to be honest, could do with a few more knobs, especially for the ADSR. I mean it has an anolog synth in it, but doesnt have enough control.
I doubt it has the same slicer effect algorithm as the JD-Xi which really made this sound. For example I cannot achieve this sound with my Roland Fantom G which might have a more similar fx-engine as V-synth. The filter sweep should be easy to do with any synth but to get the pulsating sound right that has been the issue fir me.
