What a SHAME about Turkey! My wife and I went there in 2001 about 4 months before 9/11. It was NOTHING as described. The pace was slow, and the people were wonderfully friendly. My wife took a serious fall out on the street, and no less than 40 people came running from the street, restaurants, and shops to help us. They gave us water and bandages and got a wheelchair for my wife (I have no idea where THAT came from). We spoke of this experience for years. Also, NEVER felt unsafe even off the beaten track. I know 25 years is a long time, but what a shame.
I had a very similar experience and would never go back as a result. This was 2009. The men were towards me like wild animals that had never seen a woman and I felt really unsafe. My dad wouldn’t even let me stand outside a shop by myself while they went in. A restaurant owner told me to wear a wedding ring as that would reduce the attending by “25%”. I wore all black loose clothing and still has someone constantly following me. Both Istanbul and Analya. A lot of them thought I looked Turkish too so it wasn’t because I looked different. I don’t know how local women cope with such behaviour there
The whole world changed after 9/11, happened again after Oct 7th 2023, except this time it divided people who are from the same place, amazing how many westerners support places that openly hate western life, mostly young clueless uni students
The women all getting push back from simply telling their stories of getting harassed is sadly on brand, and honestly a self snitch for all the guys who respond with aggression to women sharing their stories.

As a French-Canadian, I did encounter one Parisian service worker who couldn't understand my accent. Holy shit Pecos Texas! I have actually stayed there for a night and yes, absolutely the worst town I have ever stayed the night in. It surprised me to hear it. Stopped there for a night on the way to New Mexico in a motel, can't remember the name. I do distinctly remember finding a hole in the wall hidden behind the nightstand (probably used as a drop for drugs if I had to guess) and the motel was over top of a fucking night club or something. The music was so loud it made it hard to sleep. Relatively minor grievance, but the Walmart there has a much lower ceiling than your typical one and the lanes are narrower, making the whole place feel eerie and cramped. Absolutely would never stop there again even for just a night.
Egypt, constantly harassed, friends and I got locked in a shop and they wouldn’t let us leave until we bought something until we had to say we needed to get money, we were three males, one part near the hotel was pedestrianised & sectioned off and wouldn’t let locals in because of the pestering. The hotel cleaners were male and always wanting tips or our stuff everyday so we told them we didn’t need them
