Really appreciate your video and all the testing you did - should have watched it prior to purchasing the console but luckily you recommended it lol - looking forward to getting back into all of my original 2600 carts but currently having fun with these newer games (picked up 6 of them to start) cheers
Glad you got your 7800+. I’m hoping my Sinden lightgun will ship soon and I’ll see it before Christmas, it’s shipping from the Uk so it will take a bit longer.
From what i hear this Bentley crystal quest was designed around the original 7800 controller ... People have found using that joy stick with the two side buttons was easier.... So if you have an original give that a whirl.... Though many are starting to say once you get used to the depad controller it works fine. Great video
Nice demo. I'm awaiting the arrival of my 7800+. I have the 2600+, so it's a bit of a redundant purchase but I also heard the cartridge slot was redesigned to better handle the variability in cartridge PCB thicknesses (seen particularly across 2600 titles). The new firmware is a big plus, but I think they're rolling that out for the 2600+ as well. Looks like a solid system, and it's great to have some official releases of reproductions (e.g. Ninja Golf) and homebrews.
I've considered getting the CX78 gamepad for many years, but I have always balked at it. At this point I'm not convinced I want the new wireless version... but it is tempting- especially now that you said you're not detecting any controller lag. Many years ago I had heard that the spacing of the buttons was not ideal and I have a converted NES controller that works extremely well for the 2 button 7800 games. Maybe I'll eventually break down and get the CX78+ controller to play my 1 button games with, but I'll stick to my special converted NES gamepad for the 2 button games...
Lag is undetectable. If you have an issue with lag - set TV to game mode. My only (small) issue with the 2600+ , is the 20 sec delay, while the game is loading. 20 seconds is a bit ridiculous it seems.
I like how they included an HDMI cable and even a USB connector for the controller but couldn't be bothered to include an actual POWER brick. Loading times for these games that used to be instant is unfortunate.
What??? Fifty bucks says your TV has a USB port somewhere in the vicinity of your HDMI port. The USB cable included with the console is the same length as the HDMI cable. So why not send BOTH cables to your console. HDMI + USB cables BOTH to your console. No power brick needed. Thats what I do.
I am shamed into seeing how much I suck as a gamer. I have been REALLY struggling using the CX78+ controller on Crystal Quest. You might think you didn't play all that well but compared to me, you looked like a pro. You got further in a few minutes than I've gotten after an hour of cursing and swearing filled play.
I think what Atari is doing with these backwards and forwards compatible retro consoles is so smart and seems to be working out well for them. As someone who wasn't even born yet when any of these consoles were out, it's even managed to peak my interest to the point I think im going to buy up the 7800+ and the paddles +4 in 1 cart.
Since you asked, if you have any 2600 or 7800 Homebrew titles in your library it would be great if you could do a video on those to show if compatibility has improved. For the most part I think they work but there are some issues that can be had when not on original hardware. I know Champ Games titles may be out as they use an ARM chip that isn't properly handled by my 2600+ - or any that have a menu up front with multiple ROMs. Also the original Crossbow 7800 seems to be iffy depending on the version, and of course I have the bad version. Maybe they fixed it?
Shame Atari is way behind on shipping these out. Ordered mine on November 29th and still no email saying it's been shipped even though the website says they are ready to ship on the product page.
It outputs a 16x9 1080p frame with the 4x3 image at the center and black on the left and right filling in the rest of a full 16x9 frame. Hope that makes sense. If you switch it to 16x9 on the back of the console then it stretches the game image to the entire 16x9 1080p frame.
its actually not as hard to get them in or out as my real 7800 lol. The only Atari console I ever had that was easy to get carts in and out of was the 5200. Even the Jaguar was a mofo lol
@@supermegagrafx64 see I've never seen a 5200 or 7800 in person, that I can even remember, definitely never played them. This thing is really interesting.
Legendarily bad even after 45 years, my Commodore VIC-20. Requires real man-handling to remove haha. My 2600+ is pretty easy to slot and I prefer it to have a bit of a "snap" so I know when its fully seated.
@@supermegagrafx64 I just bought a used atari7800 origional with two controllers a month ago, and went hour away to get it. I still well get the 7800+, but only after seeing if it's glitching for other people also. just bought gamestation pro atari black friday also and like it, I don't think that atari was ready for the huge demand with the shipping issues. I see that it was out of stock for days on amazon.
Video defaulted to 360p 30 fps for me. Looked fine after switching to a 60-fps mode. Not sure if you could set the default to 60, or omit the lower resolutions?
@@redleader7988 I don't think RUclips will let me do that. I make videos that are 1080p 60fps and then upload those. RUclips generates the lower res versions automatically and then feeds those out based on whatever they think a viewer's connection can handle. When I watch other people's videos, sometimes I have to manually change the res also. It's a RUclips thing.
@@supermegagrafx64 It's fine, was just curious. A 60-fps declaimer could be useful, but most people probably already know to switch to 60-fps for 2600 stuff.

Cool intro!!! I enjoyed the unboxing, your thoughts and the game play. I am glad you did a size comparison of the 7800 and the 7800 + 😃.
Thank you for the good video. Glad it runs so well, and I hope mine is here soon.

Yeah it is a little silly to do that. Either include all of the shit or none of the shit, but be consistent either way.
sadly so many people aren't including power bricks. I feel like apple started this trend and android phones and other electronics followed.

@@Pocket_Fox this assumes that the usb cable isn’t used by something else already.
That 16:9 then converting it through OBS to 4:3 is absolutely genius. GENIUS!!
Not a bad deal. I have a original 7800 and id really consider this if my old one goes ka-put.

I hope you get it soon. Waiting sucks

I told John Snow to steal your 7800+ for me. He almost got it😢
Atari is out of their minds if they don't put Rikki & Vikki on Cart!
Agreed.
Battle Zone along with a few other 2600 games like asteroids didn't play nice with my RetroTink either...
curious if the 4:3 is actually outputting 1080p with boack bars or bezels

I think they recommend hot switching the cartridges, just pull it out with the power on and put them in with the power on, WHICH IS SO WEIRD.
