The beauty of the English Language is that most native speakers can barely speak it properly. I mean that genuinely. There’s a beautiful fluidity to it.
That's every language. People don't speak a collection of rules. All language is fluid and changes all the time, much to the chagrin of grammatical elitists. "Properly" speaking a language is itself an anti-linguistic concept. Languages will always resolve and refactor themselves, they are _alive._
You have become my favourite youtuber with this one video alone. Thank you... just THANK YOU. The "-eth" was always such... SUCH a pet peeve of mine. In a show I watched, they were doing an old-timey episode, and one of the lines I distinctly remember is "We are so happy to seeth ye." They used "-eth"... as an infinitive...
Just what I needed. There is a certain character I am writing about, and her personality is designed to use the ways of the old English. This tutorial might be short, but it's sure damn hell useful. Thanks mate!
🥲) Continue ce que tu fait 👌 Edit: that could be now my entertainment to always write in old english just to annoy my dear English teacher 😈
I hope I'll understand this, considering that I'm not a native english speaker. That should not be harder than the past subjunctive in french ... oh well it is
I don't know ... Requiring this pronoun to be used only for the singular is of course true from the formal point of view. But I have read a sufficient number of translations from Latin and Ancient Greek from the 19th and early 20th centuries and have repeatedly met that this word is used not only for the singlural number. I do not think that the most educated English classicists did not know the history of this pronoun and its "correct" use. So I would not be so categorical in prescripting. Otherwise, a very cute video))
I have a question about my ancestors that u might be able to answer but idk, so my family on my mom's side is originally from Kraztke Russia, but then they moved to Germany and became Pennsylvania Dutch (Pennsylvania German), and apparently, my family has their own dialect of German so I was wondering if you had any answers on how they would move to Germany and what their dialect of German was like
*thine audacity
omg true
gonna pin this and go get my clown shoes
Is that just because of the Royal We?
I wonder when the thy/thine alternation and the my/mine alternation died out though.

It depends on the time of leaving Germany and the town they left. They probably preserved that state of the language.
apparently Scottish people still use it and it was historically pronouced ðu
(they kept the pronunciation)
i almost 10 times rewatched that video. And i dont understand anything..
