  • Second part of this unusual conversation on the repeater. I'm glad those 2 licensed folks scared them away :D
    Part 1: • NI4CE Hooligans - Part 1
2-3 guys starting messing around on the NI4CE repeater network. More than likely unlicensed people with easily-affordable radios like mine. If you're wondering, yes this is illegal.

Here in the UK we have someone who abuses the 2 meter calling frequency regularly in Leeds/York area. They play an air raid siren and old tunes from tv shows. They also do it on channel 19 CB and channel 8 PMR UHF.

lmfao is this like the modern party line of telephoning ham radios now?
I say this becaseu I just seen this video where this guy talks about how u could dial in a telephone number back in the day and it would sound like a room full of people and something simnilar would happen on tv channels that u could hear cellphone calls etc.

    WHAT DID YOU SAY?

This is reason #872 why Baofengs are bad for the hobby (you're an obvious exception). Any knuckle-dragger can shell out $25 and be a complete jackwagon on the air. License requirements don't stop them.

Nah, Baofengs help the community more than harm. For every airway polluter you hear using a Baofeng, there's reasonable Baofeng users (unlicensed or licensed) like the OP who posted this video.
Pirate ham radio operators regularly talk on the repeaters where I live, but they're actually respectful about it because they know they're treading on thin ice. Just because a few jerks use Baofengs, it's silly to conclude that Baofengs are bad for the hobby. If you think your local repeater traffic was low, I guarantee you it would be even quieter if it weren't for Baofengs giving poorer folks a reasonably priced ham radio option.

"we should monetarily gatekeep this hobby so only retirees can enter it"

@@ironmatic1 I guess you could spin it as "gatekeeping", if you insist, but I think this video clearly demonstrates that such "gatekeeping" wouldn't always be a bad thing. How would you feel if one of your neighbors bought some $300 klunker automobile that leaked oil all over the roads in your neighborhood, spewed black smoke behind it and made a terrible racket every time he drove by? Maybe he just wanted to get into collecting cars, but that's all he could afford to get started. That wouldn't matter to you, as you would still view his car as a nuisance and feel he should spend more money to get something nicer or effect repairs on the one he has. Actually, you would likely be of the opinion that if that was the best he could do, maybe that hobby wasn't for him. If that's a reasonable view in that scenario, why should amateur radio be any different? You're negatively impacting the experience of others in both cases.
