Once the banking centre of imperial China, Pingyao is now a tourist hotspot catering to domestic tourists. The traditional architecture of the UNESCO site, as well as its square street layout, are largely intact from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Visitors can see old temples and traditional courtyards, as well as a museum with an unexpected surprise

not really. once you see 1 ancient china city, you pretty much seen them all. kinda like a beach, similarity among them accounts for like 95%.

Generally speaking, the province of Shanxi is a nice place to visit if you wish to see authentic ancient Chinese architecture. Pingyao ancient town, the temples of Mt. Wutai, and the Yun gang grottoes are all listed as world heritage sites. Merchants from Shanxi are known to be China's first bankers, and they accumulated great wealth from this commerce. They are known as Jin Shang 晋商. They spent a lot of their wealth on constructing lavish mansions. Famous ones like Wang's mansion and Qiao's mansion are preserved to this day.

No, but most of the pre-modern architecture still standing only dates backs to the 1600's give or take (Ming era). That said, there are hundreds of ancient towns spread out across China. I have a book that details the top 100.
@@Tyrhonius There are no evidence those towns are "ancient" without any ancient buildings to show unlike Rome.
