Le Bois des Moutiers: French Arts & Crafts

- Le Bois des Moutiers. An unusual architectural and horticultural gem in Normandy. Unusual, because the house, which has been owned by four generations of the Mallett family, was extensively redesigned by Edward Lutyens (the English architect) and partnered by Gertrude Jekyll who modelled the gardens (her only foray into a continental garden) culminating in both a series of walled rooms and an extensive English landscape park.
The Malletts chose Lutyens because of his association with the Arts and Crafts Movement which held similar ideals to Theosophy (practised by the Malletts) which were both humanist philosophies. Theosophy encapsulates both intellectual and spiritual philosophy based on Buddhism/Brahanism. The environment follows closely the ethos coined by William Morris "to only use things that are either practical or beautiful". And later the enclave of Varengeville sur Mer, where Les Bois des Moutiers is situated, became a haven for a plethora of artists including Picasso, Erik Satie, Virginia Woolf and many others.
The beauty of the place has perhaps been best encapsulated recently by Franz Potisek, a Parisian interior designer: "Every time I go there I seem to suffer from Stendahl Syndrome, overcome with the emotion of so much beauty and harmony. I am on a cloud for days afterwards."

A Lutyens masterpiece - that window latch!
Lutyens and Jekyll. Wonderful. That being said, I wish that they had shown more of the house. The kitchen! The dining room. The living room. I am beside myself with curiosity.
It's deeply satisfying to know this fellow is living in that beautiful home and garden, and that he loves it fiercely - that he is intensely invested in the history and its place in the world, that the house becomes a home because he appreciates it every day - that he stops and lets it wash over him like he did with those lovely flowers - and four generations of his family doing the same thing - deeply appreciating and loving their beautiful home has turned it into something sacred - I think so at least. It has that feel of something more, to me. Thank you for sharing this.
It’s so good to know something this beautiful exists
The external architecture, the garden design and landscape in which this home is situated is breathtakingly gorgeous. Imagine walking around the gardens with a G & T on a summer early evening...heaven.
SO BEAUTIFUL! What a lot of planning and work went into this landscaping and what a lot of work to upkeep.
Beautiful!!! I was at the Chateau with my mother. Long time ago... We were allowed to come inside where one of our group played the grand piano for the elegant old lady. She probably owned the Chateau at that time. It all brings back memories...
A gem of a place I never knew about! What a truly beautiful house and garden! 😍
Well-I’m glad SOMEBODY’S living my life. BTW-7:56. I laughed outloud.
😀love your take on life.
Magical! Love the ending with his children. Bet he's a great dad.
Timeless true beauty, the house and the garden. Now compare this to these concrete monster blocks we now call houses.
Todays degeneration of architecture...we lose our culture.
Getting a well designed house is very expensive, not everyone can afford a good architect obviously, have to make do with poorly designed homes
True, but we still have control over how we decorate our interiors - wallpapers, paints, rugs, cushions, comfortable sofas, pictures, candles, books, flowers...
We can create beauty, even within a plain box. After all, in the winter I rarely even have to look at the exterior of my home, and even in the warmer months only when I'm in the garden (when I position my chair with my back to the house!).
@@clairenoon4070 yes,I like everything you've mentioned , I like how our houses evolve with time and they aren't designed by a designer as our life does the designing for us.
I love how a 20p picture found on a flea market, 50 p plate, or a 1£ planter has a story to tell. I love how the real treasures are the pictures made by our children, or grandchildren and this is how we watch our houses grow.
Its just beautiful ... house and the gardens. May it never change over the years!
This one quite fits as "Manderley" in Rebecca.
Its beautiful so glad the house still has original features .
Beautiful view, romantic vintage house, with heart touching piano background music , definitely my taste. Thanks for your FB vedio.
Lucy Zhu composer is Erik Satie

All the beautiful French countryside did you showed us gave me a chance to go and see if you’d be out in the world without leaving my home thank you so much for this awesome video
Very beautiful especially the outdoor,my taste.
With the piano music, and then the children at the end, this must be the French version of The Shining.
After we met yesterday through your magnificent video of GM at the Opéra Garnier, I suscribed to your chanel and now I am discovering all your videos. It's a delicious happyness to see all the subjects you share with us. They are all I love and appreciate, they are gifts in my own Chrismas fireplace ! I am so fond of interior designs, beautiful and peaceful landscapes and fine music. I'll so happy to discover remarcable and talentuous people. I have many hours of delightful brightness to live, thank you. And, please forgive my "handmade" (!) English, I live in Paris and there is few opportunity to practice.

magical
Extraordinary
Mon Dieu, ce manoir est un rêve.
Make sure to visit the little Saint-Valéry church & Cimetière marin de Varengeville-sur-Mer (Morville) and the path descending to the beach...
Merci
Beautiful, but slightly depressing.
🌸
Such a delicate but rich setting would have been better with happier music and perhaps a pretty woman by the hosts side? After all, it was created by a romantic couple, Lutyens and Jekyll .
Is anyone else deeply disturbed by the swooshing sound in the background music? I know it's probably meant to represent the proximity of the sea but it feels like the buildup in some 70s ghost anthology series.
Красиво
Obviously the videographer much preferred outdoors to indoors. Still got the light wrong at times. Far too dark. Brilliant sound though.
Beautiful house, hope French people will can own this kind of house one day, most of them can't that's why most of these house are own by English. But Okay it is well made.
The owner is now Jérôme Seydoux, a French movie producer and grandfather of actress Léa Seydoux. A very rich family…
looooong documentary
💓🇫🇷
Ah there's my house!
Nem ertem! Fordítsd le!
I've died and gone to heaven!
Não entendi : um lindo projeto do Edwin Lutyens seria french arts and crafts ? Really ?
The Satie music background is a bit too somber and heavy for this kind of video
I thought it was really French Arts and Crafts, not a house style🤣
you are like me. We enjoy the same things. We have to meet. write me.
This music makes me want to go grab an anti depressant... ;-)
Sartie
Sorry Satie
