- This time on Rock Rods we are taking you to the most legendary hill climb in the sport of rock bouncing. That's right the infamous Cable Hill. It hasn't been raced in 5 years and hasn't been climbed in 2 years. Gray Rock ORV Park in Mt. Olive has been closed for years as this monster of a hill just sat there but for my Birthday we got special permission to bring a handful of rock bouncers to see if this beast of a rock bouncing hill climb is still climbable. I will even be hitting it in my Busted Knuckle Films Rock Bouncer that I call knucklehead. Jake Burkey is here in his Busted Knuckle Off Road Rock Bouncer to try and conquer this hill as well as a dozen other well built rock buggies. Man this hill has always been the gold standard for beat down videos… when it’s wet the commitment needed to carry crazy speed and skip across the ledges takes serous balls.
It is wild wet for sure, I think I need more motor! Maybe a Turbski or blower is in my future.

We used to hot lap gut buster, they recently leveled it out with a dozer. Now the show would be who’s your daddy. But the rut at the bottom is too much.

This might sound like a stupid comment. We are big fans. My husband and I watch your videos every evening. It's our bedtime routine! The dog even knows we are on the last TV show of the day. We might have watched all your videos from when they began by this time. We are just an old couple in the UK who get such pleasure from watching the endurance and determination of the drivers. And the SKILL. But here is my stupid (or not stupid) question, how many drivers end up with physical injuries in this sport? Happy birthday, and thanks for a really special video.
Very rarely will you see an injury. Hitting a hill this hard and racing will leave you sore but with all the safety gear and such that is about it.

It is epic for sure. Owner closed it because of neighbors/insurance/crappy people etc. he doesn’t need the money.

@@BustedKnuckleVideo dam no shit u do that many tho?? i wouldnt have thought that.. my buddy Bert n i use to build custom rides at Hampstead Autobody we didnt turn out numbers like that, not for a full car although ur simply bendin tube, n yea obviously its a little more complicated but not too much, i also worked at n was partial owner again lol of Advanced Design in Finksburg we did a good bit of complicated tube work, mostly sheet but a lot of tube also unfortunately work isnt as plentiful n its hard to find ppl worth partnering with that r interested in the same things
Yeah we do that many a year. We are hoping to be able to ramp up to even more this year.

Why do I keep thinking Matt's Offroad could climb these hills easy.....
First problem is all these guys are running way too much air pressure in their tires and some don't even have bead locks.
Please point to the rock bouncer in this video without beadlocks....I'll wait. Matt's Offroad recovery might be able to winch up this. They ride at moab and sand hollow which is like driving on sand paper for traction. Here in Alabama its like trying to climb greased, ice.

So I’m wondering… Could a rock crawler with the right setup just walk right up this obstacle? Are these guys (mostly) failing to reach the top because they insist on trying to do it at full throttle?
Absolutely Not. This hill cannot be crawled when wet. Doesn't matter what your rock crawler setup is.
Next time you should invite Cleetus McFarland for judging - because some guys did a good burnout show! 😁😇🤟

They need more momentum at the bottom of that hill. Most of those competitors probably didn't get up it, because of being so slippery and steep. They additionally need to stay to the right of it because, as I saw from that camera at the top of Cable Hill, there's a pocket cut into the left side of it. This prevents the climbers from going any further than the place it's located.
Momentum, line choice, and a lucky bounce all help as well as horsepower. You are correct that you have to ride the right side as there is a hole in the left. Making yourself and your vehicle do that is the challenging part.
Looks like you need to drop a few psi in the tyres, i couldnt see any deformation , slippery means you need more grip right?
slippery on this obstacle means you have to hit it harder which means less air pressure will bend/break wheels. Airing down a lot is more of a crawling thing.
Cable Hill is the complete reason I started watching Rock bouncers when I found it

These rigs range from 6-12 psi. You can’t air down and crawl this obstacle especially when wet. So we are forced to run higher pressures and bounce our way up where lower pressures would bend or break a wheel.
and they call that stuff out west slick rock lol aint nothing slick like shale when its wet or has moss on it

Out of curiosity..... watching the in car of Matt.....why start out in first and shift.... assuming you are in low can't you just start right out in second or third and hold it down?

Not every just tries it. We had 1 make it and 2 others that were very close. It is a slick hill. Even more so since it rained for a week straight before and morning of and hadn't been hit in 2 years.
