Underrated 80s jam!! This was the follow up to the surprise crossover smash Rumors and was a top 20 r&b hit. The success of Rumors split the Timex Social Club up with Jay King leaving the group and taking lead singer Valerie to form Club Nouveau and signed with Warner Brothers and released their classic debut album with the massive #1 single Lean on Me. This song was a great follow up but got overshadowed by the similar sounding and superior classic Why You Treat Me So Bad from Club Nouveau, which I suspect started out as Thinking About You. And I feel like Thinking About You was also used in the refrain of Club Nouveau Heavy On My Mind. Either way Timex Social Club was a great album with 3 top 20 r&b hits despite all the breakup drama. Their Mixed Up World track is 🔥🔥🔥
So Michael Marshall from Timex Social Club also sang the hook on "I Got 5 On It" by The Luniz and that song contains the melody line from this instrumental as the base sample for that beat. Jay King, Foster & McElroy definitely recycled the Timex material with Club Nouveau. Although Michael Marshall, who didn't get his fair monetization from Timex or The Luniz, has finally secured his rights for the intellectual property and is thriving now independently. Jordan Peele used his voice on the trailer music for his horror film "Us" with the altered version of "I Got 5 On It." Michael also has also received great praise for his rendition of "I Left My Heart in SF" from the film "Last Black Man in SF."
