In a one sided STOMPING by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jerome Bettis goes for over 100 yards in just ONE half of play. Hadn't Bill Cowher rested him, I imagine Jerome could have gone for potentially 150-200 yds!

And he ended up having a worse life (found dead in his jail cell in 2016 from suicide.) He was already doing time in prison (assault with a deadly weapon and assaulting his girlfriend) and had been a suspect in connection with his cellmate's murder the year before.

A RB that can run out the clock at the end of games
Najee needs to do that, be the ball control RB that gets 1st downs and controls the clock

I remember the day Bettis got the nickname "The Bus", although I can't find the specific highlight. Dude broke into the secondary and ran for daylight. 4 players jumped on him from behind and tried to tackle him, but he just kept running with them attached.
The announcer (probably Myron Cope) says " It's like they just hopped on a PAT bus and rode it into the end zone" and the name stuck.

Boy did it stick!! I remember them doing a couple of features with him behind the wheel of PAT buses after that and them doing a wrap on a bus with him to advertise buying bus passes. He was meant to be a Steeler with the way he ran the ball. Him coming here was a perfect fit

    • @funzjag

It was Cope who brought the nickname to Pittsburgh. I believe that he originally received the nickname when he was playing in college at ND. I miss Myron Cope. So wacky, so energetic, completely Pittsburgh! He really represented the "everyman" in the greater Pittsburgh area. His accent, his use of Pittsburgh area slang, his zany way of expressing himself. People who were not familiar with the area often had a hard time understanding exactly what Myron was getting at sometimes. Being born in Little Washington (40 south of Pittsburgh) I could understand and relate to Mr.Cope.💐🙏REST IN PEACE MYRON 🙏💐

Rich Brooks knew after that game his days in St. Louis were numbered. Worst player evaluator in the NFL. Chuck Knox knew Bettis was special and that's why he was drafted so high in '93. Top 10 I believe. Won rookie of the year in 93 finishing second to only Emmitt Smith in yards and average nearly 5 yards per carry. Ran all over our Blitzburgh defense that year in an upset loss for the Steelers. He was immediately one of my favorite players and when I heard we traded for him in 96 I was shocked and ecstatic. Best trade ever!

When the news broke that the Steelers had acquired Bettis my only response was, "hmm." Didn't follow Notre Dame, didn't follow the Rams. Didn't know Bettis. I trusted the Rooneys and Cowher and hoped the Steelers could squeeze some good out of Jerome. Never expected anything like what Pittsburgh got (for essentially nothing). Bettis from the Rams for 2 draft picks was a fleecing. THE greatest trade in the Steelers franchise history.

Nothing impressive about this. The rams were one of the worst teams in sports from 1990-98. I'm sure Bettis was happy just to get out of there and go to a contender. His dominant performance was not surprising against such a shitty team. It's like the Favre game after his father's death. I was happy for him but it wasn't impressive considering how bad the raiders were.
