  • When business interests threatened Florida’s Everglades, writer and activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas stepped up to fight for the environment.
    About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

@@inesagrace3510 she paraphrased it in this video (she left a few lines in the middle out), but yes Marjory Stoneman Douglas did write that in an article. To be exact, it was in a 1980 article entitled “How You Can Protect the Environment” published in the journal GeoJourney. The full quote was:
"Join a local environmental society, but see to it that it does not waste time on superficial purposes…Don’t think it is enough to attend meetings and sit there like a lump…. It is better to address envelopes than to attend foolish meetings. It is better to study than act too quickly; but it is best to be ready to act intelligently when the appropriate opportunity arises… Speak up. Learn to talk clearly and forcefully in public. Speak simply and not too long at a time, without over-emotion, always from sound preparation and knowledge. Be a nuisance where it counts, but don’t be a bore at any time… Do your part to inform and stimulate the public to join your action…. Be depressed, discouraged and disappointed at failure and the disheartening effects of ignorance, greed, corruption and bad politics - but never give up."

I was born here in Miami September 8th 1966. My first trip to Everglades National Park was in 1970 chokoloskee Florida. Everglades City. All I can tell you is this is the first time that I've seen this and of course I have the book the River of Grass. This is outstanding and Incredibly emotional for me. From Everglades City as a kid going down to Flamingo and then all points in between on the Gulf of Mexico. And thankfully my wife and my children adults now and my son-in-law who's from Chicago we're able to see the beauty of the Everglades. It's not like it was at all. I remember when I first went to Everglade City in 1970. The horseshoe crabs were alive lining the beach the Turner River had the burial mounds which were intact. This was a strange place of beauty. Thank you for this incredible whatever you want to call it! Cheers and thank you for remembering!

US history is an exciting drama, but is presented in watered down facts & dates. My appreciation for the ideas this country stands for were acquired in college due to reading I did on my own. ☹️ Our curriculum should be presented in a way that inspires and excites young people to both appreciate & participate in our democracy.

“Don’t think it is enough to attend meetings and sit there like a lump…. Be depressed, discouraged and disappointed at failure and the disheartening effects of ignorance, greed, corruption and bad politics - but never give up.”
    ― Marjory Stoneman Douglas
