I also use a 183cm Super Strong Tripod linked here: amzn.to/1XeBWI0
And when filming at night or in low light PhotoSel soft box lights, which are linked here: amzn.to/23y1L5x
Links to bookdepository and amazon are usually affiliate links.
I really enjoyed this video and was very pleased to already have read and loved quite a few of those on your list! For a future video, I would actually love to see which books you think deserve the hype they get? My top 3 underhyped reccomendations are: 1) Marian by Ella Lyons, this is a Robin Hood retelling where Robin is a young girl, though it doesnt really go into the adventures of Robin Hood herself much but instead focuses on Lady Marian and her coming of age 2) Amatka by Karin Tidbeck, this is a sciene fiction book in translation that paints a very interesting world where language has real physical power 3) Of Sorrow and Such by Angela Slatter, this is a fantasy novella about witches that's very quiet and historical and I think you'd really enjoy it
Ah a books that are worth the hype video! I could definitely do that ^_^ thanks. Also I want Marian so much now, thanks for the recommendations.
I think it is actually impossible for me to watch one of your videos without heading to my Goodreads and adding a shed load of books to my TBR 🤣😘
Aha sorry not sorry ;)
This is one of my favourite types of videos! It’s so great to learn about books that people LOVE that I haven’t heard about before.
The poetry collection sounds absolutely brilliant - that is going on my tbr straight away.
Oooh New World Fairytales! I remember you mentioning it in the past and it sounds right up my street, thank you for reminding me about it! Also going on my tbr😂
This was a great list, thank you Jen!
I’ve never read (or heard of) any of these books. Thank you for the recommendations! Will have to check these out 😊
So glad you found some books that interest you :D
I love this idea! We need more love for all these underhyped books!
Definitely!
I bought You Sad Feminist a while back in a big haul, but sort of forgot about it, thanks for reminding me :)
Yay I hope you enjoy it!
..When asked (..a time ago) her lead book selection criterion, '..Reads and Daydreams'!' Lauren said she preferred anything well-written over genre, and at this juncture, I share that sentiment and believe that's why I'm drawn to '..Bodies of Water!', '..Dark Days!', and '..Fighters of Life!'! Stupendous video, and many thanks!!
Havent read any of these but you make them sound quite intersting. Well done Jean
Glad to have peaked your interest ^_^ they're all great.
I must get to the Parkin Fairy Tales. I bought these because of you and Jen before I was on booktube myself so need to get onto that. I also have The Dolls Alphabet on the TBR. The Fallen Children sounds ace. The Children of Jocasta should most certainly have more readers.
Aah you must Simon, New World Fairy Tales is sooooo good ^_^
More!! 😊😊
Messaged received ;)
I haven't read any of these yet, but I've heard of The Fallen Children before (from Sanne), so I'm intrigued. But, yeah, I was afraid I had to read The Midwich Cuckoo first too. Now you've got me intrigued all over again!
Nah I'd say jump straight into The Fallen Children, it's brilliant ^_^.
Great list 👍🏽😘
Thank you ^_^
What a wonderful list! I've seen a lot of these around Booktube so they come highly recommended - will check them out x
Yay I hope you enjoy them!
I agree that The Doll's Alphabet is incredibly underrated. It is the book I most wish I could go back and experience for the first time all over again. I'm so excited to follow Grudova's career, I think she is going to be extraordinary.
Yes! I would love to read whatever she writes next ^_^
I HAVE to pick up The Fallen Children! It sounds amazing!!
Yay, it really is!
Loved this! I would recommend Notes on Nationalism which is also one of the Penguin Moderns :)
I have that one! :D
Great idea for a video! I've added a few of your suggestions to my TBR.
Going by your criteria of less than five hundred ratings on Goodreads, I've picked out a few books which I think deserve more attention:
Never Goodnight by Coco Moodysson - I was surprised to see that this didn't have more ratings since it was the inspiration for the critically acclaimed film Vi är bäst! (We Are The Best!). It's a graphic novel about the everyday adventures of three punk 13 year old girls. It's simple but charming.
Rotten at the Heart by Bartholomew Daniels - This was one of those very cheap paperbacks that I picked up from the newsagent, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing. With the premise of William Shakespeare finding himself caught in the middle of solving a crime, I was expecting a humorous romp, but the author makes the whole situation seem almost believable, and I was very moved by William's journey through grief following the death of his son. It's not a perfect book, and it's definitely not for everyone, but as a Shakespeare nerd, I'm glad to have found it.
Nearly Departed by Rook Hastings - I think the best way to describe this book is that it's Skins with a touch of The Breakfast Club and also there are ghosts. It's just a fun teen read (and actually quite scary at times) which I personally prefer over a lot of other, more popular, supernatural YA fiction. I own the sequel but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
Great video... I was thinking about making a video like this myself because I've read some gems lately and they don't seem to get the hype or recommendations they should x
All of these books sound wonderful, especially You Sad Feminist and Bodies of Water. Loved this even more than your overhyped books video.
They're both so good and worth picking up. I will definitely make another list for a future video ^_^
REALLY need to get my hands on the Michael Rosen and You Sad Feminist now! (As well as the rest but these two are SHOUTING at me!!)
At Mr B’s I’m constantly pushing ‘Em and the Big Hoom’ into hands as my underhyped book. It looks at a woman suffering with mental health problems in India, from around the 60’s onwards, and the effect this has on her family. The story is told by her young son and even though the blurb makes it sound harrowing, and it is very upsetting, there is so much beauty, humour and warmth to be found in there as you will often find in families during hard times. (I also bang on a lot about All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews but feel that probably did get the hype, but in my mind people should have it tattooed on their forehead how brilliant it is!!)
I am reading The holly sinner by Thomas Mann, which is like a christian retelling of Edipo's myth. It is heartbreaker but really good.
My list would be
The Spring of Kasper Meier by Ben Fergusson
Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler
Hot Milk by Deborah Levy
Cinnamon Toast at the End of the World
The Storied Life of AJ Fickery
Ah thank so much! The only I've heard of is Hot Milk so it's nice to hear of some more underhyped books :D.
Jean Bookishthoughts That was an edited list. I've loads more in mind. I've been thinking that Scottish booktubers could get together to go to Bloody Scotland book festival and maybe interview some authors?
On the topic of Greek retellings, does any one know of any retellings of Troy from the perspective of Andromache? (Other than the play by Euripides 😊)
I haven't come across anything specifically. Although Silence of the Girls is about the Trojan Woman (haven't read it yet).
great video!!
Thank you ^_^
Loved it.
Thank you ^_^
I love your videos! I have a question. I don’t remember if I saw it on your channel, but there is a book that is a retelling of Beowulf with a female protagonist. I don’t remember the title or the name of the author. Was it you who featured it? If so, please remind me the title!
Ooh no it wasn't but now I want to know what it is aha! Let me know if you find out ^_^
Jean Bookishthoughts haha! Ok, I will!
