Meerut is a city in Meerut district of the western part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is an ancient city, with settlements dating back to the Indus Valley civilisation having been found in and around the area. The city lies 70 km (43 mi) northeast of the national capital New Delhi, within the National Capital Region, and 430 km (270 mi) west of the state capital Lucknow.As of 2011, Meerut is the 33rd most populous urban agglomeration and the 26th most populous city in India. In Ramayana, It was known as 'Maydant Ka Kheda', the capital of May danav. It was the hometown of Mandodari, the wife of Ravana.
Hastinapur is a city in the Meerut district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Hastinapura, described in Hindu texts such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas as the capital of the Kuru Kingdom, is also mentioned in ancient Jain texts. Hastinapur is located on the right bank of the Ganga river. On the bank of the Budhi Ganga, two places near Hastinapur (Draupadi Ghat and Karna Ghat) reference Mahabharata personages
