For anyone curious, I have the stock pipes and air intake on my iron and I can cruise at 70-75 at about 3900rpm. It's definitely not the most comfortable on the highway but it hasn't stopped me from riding 150-300 miles a day. But yea I agree if you want comfort, go for a touring bike or a car lol
Nick Ferdinande my dad did Wichita, KS to Santa Fe, NM on his 883 about 20 years ago with no problems so I don't know why people complain about sportsters not being able to handle highway travel.
I take my iron 883 for a 2000 mile trip every year. Stock seats. Goes through decent roads. Maybe I have an iron butt because it's not that bad at all.
Dude, you definitely have an iron butt haha. I took it for a 2 and a half hour ride to and back for the first time and OUCH. I'm still hurting. Not sure what I should upgrade. I'm about 5'10" so I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.
I have a 2014 Iron 883 and I love her she is do beautiful and it feels great to just go out and ride! Great for beginners and still enough power for me. The handling is amazing on them and twisties and turns are feeling very good. The thing has a bunch of tourqe which is great in the dry. However in the rain it’s not goid to ride that you have to go veryyy easy on the brakes and turning/leaning. Any way great bike for the money and great for beginners and intermediate riders like me.
Mark Winchester : not what im saying, in not a beginner anymore myself and I still love the bike. I get what you’re saying but not everyone has the same opinion as us.
I definitely love mine , they handle great and are a blast to ride , but I find myself needing more power on the highway for sure . Looking at the street bob and lowrider s
+g0nk Yeah you drive up in your car and it sprays water so you can sit there with wipers on and wash your windshield without getting out. Convenient for cars... sucks for bikes, lol
@@maddog7999 born and raised florida but now live in illinois. People here always complaining about cicadas. I'm like you ain't dealt with shit until you try to get dried love bugs off your car.
Bro, your Sportster is awesome. I'm looking at getting an 07 that's a really good deal. It will be my first HD/cruiser. Had a Ninja many years ago, but I'm 41 now, and the cruiser life is calling.
Love the iron. Blockhead has a point, better seat is a must for a 2hr + ride Trust me... The bike is not as enjoyable during long rides (as a Touring class ) but it's doable.
3:05 I have had the same feeling. When I first started I almost bought an Iron 883, then chose to go with the Fz-07. Which a year later was upgraded to the FZ-09. Your bike's looking good though, and sounding good.
Back when I had my 883 I put a Mustang wide touring seat on it and some Road King air shocks on the back. I rode that bike 2-up AND with the trailer behind it from Pennsylvania to Texas. Then I rode it solo with no trailer from Texas to Key West and back. That bike did everything I asked of it with no problems. Yes the engine will run in the upper RPMs and yes you will have to shift more often than a bigger bike. But that bike ate up everything I threw at it with no complaints.
I have a 2007 XL883L that I made into a full bagger with batwing fairing lower leg warmer fairing and leather wrapped fiberglass saddlebags and my bike actually handles better on the highway. I did install progressive rear shocks. I have the screaming eagle intake and V&H slipon mufflers. I purchased the bike new and I have never gotten tired of it. I have put about 40k on it. Its a great bike.
I test rode the iron almost got one BUT have 883r it will violate every posted speed limit in America that said it will never be a sport bike but also saying it is fun watching big twin guys try to stay up mine truly needed better shocks put aftermarket tires and it does more than well for what it is
I have a 2007 883 custom and have done a 4 hour trip one way rested for a bit then 4 hours back. With a good setup it is fun. Definitely thinking of getting a windshield though.
Lot of the time, the guys that say these bikes are gutless are bigger dudes who belong on touring bikes I'm your same size and build, and feel these are more than enough for the highway with someone our size in the seat You just have to battle the wind a bit, but you're on a motorcycle for fucks sake
How was it for you on longer trips? I rode it yesterday for 5 and a half hours and ouch, I HURT. I'm about the same build height as you, so I'm curious
Sameish build 5’10 200lbs with a swole build. I just rode 100 miles last night going 80mph on the highway for 60 miles and if cars weren’t passing me I was like passing them at a good pace.
Hi from the UK. My Iron 883 has stage one with Vance and Hines short shots. Cruises at 80 in 5th gear at 3250 revs. I love her. Only downside...either your ass or the gas will give out shortly after 100 miles. Take a break, fuel up and love her again!
Came here looking for info on an iron 883 on the highway, recognize my old stomping grounds at around 6:00 as the conroy overpass on the florida turnpike. Pretty cool
Man, do I hate getting slimed with a broken sprinkler head going off in weird directions, especially at night. The 883 is a little buzzy cruising 70-80, but it's just a normal running load on the motor. Ear plugs are more for wind noise than anything else at highway speed.
Great video. I have a handful of people telling me not to settle on the 883... I love the look and don't ride long distances but want something that could. If I can find the 1200 I'll grab it but looking at a 2013 used with 5k miles... Fact it can pull 90 shows me it's more than enough bike for me.
I would say any bike 750 up with the right seat could be a cross country bike. It's all with what the person can handle. I heard story's of hardtails doing cross country trips.
BLOCKHEAD so would I. but you'd be shocked at what people have ridden cross country. Jesse James ridden cross country on some of his choppers. Or so he clams
I've never ridden and I really don't want something heavy, fancy or expensive. I'd get an aftermarket seat for the 883 (plus a couple other mods) and just grin and bear the ride....
I'm looking to get into riding at some point. Would you be able to do a vid of your riding gear? I just moved to a southern state and hate the heat. I believe you live in Florida and have good advice on what summer gear to get.
I can't understand people talking about a wind blast on a naked motorcycle. If the wind bothers you buy a flyscreen or a windshield for it. I think a flyscreen would look best on an Iron 883.
I have one of these and after awhile you want to go faster but these bikes only do about 108. keeping up those high revs causes the engine to just die. like mine did within 2 years
I think this bike is gonna be me mate, small but enuff cubes and that 5spd is gonna be deadly on around my lil city, only gonna be used as a work2 home bike 6kms round trip, something compact for a 5min ride to work haha, my mates have big nightrods but this wil be perfect, are there turbo kits available for these? That lil 800cc would be so quick to 100km
So I’m gonna get a iron 883 for my first bike. Never wanted anything but a Harley. When I go to my local Harley Davidson every dealer said “most people that buy the 883 get bored of it after 4 months.” So my question to you is have you gotten bored of the bike?
Yo Blockhead, I officially bought my iron today. Its a beast 2017! My first bike ever. Anyways Im going to pick it up on Saturday and Im driving it home from the dealership, which Im going to to have to take the highway for a bit to get home. Any advice you have for a first timer taking the iron on the hwy for the first time? Love the vlog!
I live in SFL, I need to wear dress pants and a dress shirt to work but I am considering to pick up a Triumph Rocket 3. Do you think dress pants and shirt would be a "wise" choice to wear, even if work is about 10 miles away?...always great videos keep it up
While it's not recommended as they will tear up and wont provide as much protection in the event you go down as a good pair of jeans will, but I'm in the same area as BlockHead and I've seen guys in dress pant and shirts on cruisers going to and from work. It's not recommended but people wear shorts while riding...lol I do squid it when it's really hot out in a short sleeve or cut off, but I always have my leather and jeans on with boots. Wise, no. Is it done, yes. But that's the thrill of riding right! I would just recommend not wearing dress shoes, keep those in a bag or something and wear at least ankle boots. Hope this helped.
+CUBANOCTOPUS Like Airborne Vet replied, you see people squid it up all the time, but only takes going down once to lose your skin. Should wear all the gear all the time. Do we? No, it's hot as shit here in FL man! But still doesn't mean you shouldn't wear your gear. I always (ALWAYS) wear jeans, boots, short sleeve shirt, and helmet. Only thing I ever leave behind at times is my jacket, and I shouldn't, but sometimes it's too damn hot.
When I saw the title I was worried for your safety, thought you were going to be riding on i4 😂. Like your videos every time I see an iron 883 I wonder if it's you. Stay safe.
im thinking about taking my forty-eight from central PA to upstate NY this coming summer. Its about 225miles each way. 95% is interstate with mix of 65mph to 70mph. i think biggest thing that I find it annoying is the wind noise. I got skull cap, that's half the issue tho. Power wise, its just fine. I'm instaling RSD's 7.5" ape bar next week, and that may make it worse as far as wind noise goes. That, and I Have to stop every hour or so to fill up(Peanut tank looks great, but 2.5gal capacity suck ballz...)
Hey Blockhead, looking at new helmets and I noticed in this video there isn’t much wind noise. I normally wear a half helmet but want a full face now. Is that helmet as quite as it sounds in the video? And can you put a sena in that one?
I just took mine to the highway this weekend and 75mph is the top speed for me, shit feels like is going to kill me, it vibrates a lot and the wind shakes the bike from side to side. Maybe is because its my first harley and Im used to sports bikes but idk dude, feels pretty unsafe to be honest
I need advice. I just bought a 2015 iron 883 . Im learning to ride it. But i noticed the hand controls are a little uncomfortable. Should i change them out or just get used to them
Hey blockhead, always love your videos. Do you have forward controls on in this video and if so, how does that affect your riding at high-speed‘s, and do you find their more comfortable than mid controls ? Thanks brother
3900 rpm’s At those speeds isn’t bad. I researched it, the Honda Rebel 1100 in 6th gear is turning 3500 rpm’s at 60. Honda engineers their engines for shorter stroke * higher rpms. I’ll take the 883 anyway. BTY, "microfibre" is a markething scam like "almond milk". that microfiber is made out of polyester which is made from crude oil. It's properties don't absorb water. You can't beat cotton for absorbing water. Cotton absorbs 7x more water than wool. There is a reason why the Spanish Conquistadors in 15th century found the Aztecs wearing a new fabric they had not seen before: cotton. Light weight linen is the best to wear in FL's heat. Wrinkles easily but is the coolest. a cotton rag will absorb water better than seomthing made of crude oil. polyester is a vapor barrier. that's why it's miserable to wear in teh heatl .like wearing a garbage bag. ALSO, only lactatiing mammals have milk. Almonds are not mammals. That's Biology 101. Almonds don't have breasts. Almonds don't get pregnant, either. total marketing scam. I looked up Willie Max swing arm bags. they're made of fake leather. NO THANKS.
I noticed you went through the SunPass lane. Where do you mount your SunPass? I usually just have it in my pocket and hold it up when I pass though. Have they made a motorcycle sunpass?
the 883 sounded good I have a 1200x at like 75 it seems like I'm just Cruzan for me I have done like 2 bike runs for the poker run and the challenged teen and it did good my only think so far is the size of the tank I have a turbine intake, vance and hince staggered and the fuel pack for it my only thought is that my bike has hickups and I was to fix that I took it to the dealer and same result any help
You wear pants when you ride?! I gotta try that!

Liked you taking down the f150 at about 5:05. Lol
Still catching up on yer old iron vids !!
Do you still ride it?
Dam bro you was in orlando
so how about in SoCal where everyone goes 85 on the freeway lol
Silidons it's fine. It'll cruise at 100 mph all day long
Idk tbh, I have a 07 883 custom and at 5th gear goin 60 sometimes seems like it’s a bit much. A 6th gear from factory would be nice on the 883...
I need advice. I just bought a 2015 iron 883 . Im learning to ride it. But i noticed the hand controls are a little uncomfortable. Should i change them out or just get used to them
Cool ride.
Hey blockhead, always love your videos. Do you have forward controls on in this video and if so, how does that affect your riding at high-speed‘s, and do you find their more comfortable than mid controls ?
Thanks brother
Mustang makes a vintage solo seat that would be very comfortable.
NO THANKS.
Same with the pants feelings
I noticed you went through the SunPass lane. Where do you mount your SunPass? I usually just have it in my pocket and hold it up when I pass though. Have they made a motorcycle sunpass?
i know you've said the iron was your first bike, but did you have any experience on two wheels before? like a dirt bike or anything?
GNRFAN243 he's said before he rode dirtbikes
+GNRFAN243 Yeah dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, and 3 wheelers as a kid
Where on the highway there is the free air check
the 883 sounded good I have a 1200x at like 75 it seems like I'm just Cruzan for me I have done like 2 bike runs for the poker run and the challenged teen and it did good my only think so far is the size of the tank I have a turbine intake, vance and hince staggered and the fuel pack for it my only thought is that my bike has hickups and I was to fix that I took it to the dealer and same result any help
Totally get the whole not wearing pants thing. lol.
I'm not alone! Awesome, haha
