I have a green horse, new to dressage, and I realize that I tend to ride him with a forward seat just so that I can be prepared for any unexpected "coltish" movements. This video was such a helpful reminder for me to stay upright tall and centered as much as I can so that my horse is learning good habits of balanced carriage and developing the important hind and back muscles from the very beginning of our dressage training. Thank you!
Oh, I understand how that can go! Sitting will correct posture and alignment will actually keep you more stable in the saddle as well, and decrease the chance of you falling of if he does something silly.
Good tips for sitting up straight. I never think about my collar bone or my shoulder blades when I ride. Your horses are so good! I wonder what they are thinking when you’re showing us how to do it wrong😂 just love how pleasant that all look in every video.
Stumbled across this playlist, thought i'd give it a watch. I had been struggling with my loan horses hind end, it started clacking against each other, shes also very hard to get into the contact ( we ride bitless). Figured out that it's me who's probably partially causing this, so i'm going to do my best to fix my posture and hope that she learns how to do certain things as well. THANK YOU AMELIA!
This was great thank you. I've worked on this and instantly found that my lower leg position and hands are much more stable. As a bonus, my husband was watching me ride whilst he was walking the dogs and he commented on how my position had improved - i hadn't told him i was working on this!
Thanks for this explanation. All so true and hard to get rid of those habits. But my horse is a good teacher and I try to watch good riders to correct myself
Great video and teaching. I have developed a bad habit due to my other horse being injured from a recommended dressage saddle that didn’t fit and never recovered from the back injury and now I have a new horse at the barn and he is younger so I feel like I am hurting his back. Saddle fitter has been out and saddle fits great monitoring saddle fit but in my mind I want to take pressure off his back trying to break through of this bad habit.
This has helped my riding so much thank you for sharing! I practiced yesterday on my ride pushing my shoulder blades together (I always struggled with the advice sit up straight as I felt like it just stiffened my whole back) and not tipping forward. I felt so much more balanced and stable and I even had my stirrups longer than I usually do. It helped so much with my seat I even managed to sit a little of my horses very big moving bouncy trot and rising to his trot felt so much more comfortable! It also makes so much sense (and seems so obvious now 😅) that for them to use their hind end more you need to sit a little back.
I have always had good upright posture and I maintain it when I ride, but so helpful to illustrate with video what can happen. I feel like a dinosaur with a world is so full of technology........I rarely use a cell!! All the same thank you :)
I wish I could see the difference. Every video I watch when there should be a difference….I don’t see anything. 😢 I get so frustrated because I feel I am the only one. 😢. I do love your videos and so happy you create such amazing content.
It takes a long time to train your eye! Remember riding and horses is a lifelong journey. And you definitely aren’t the only one. I do give more face to face feedback in my courses if that interests you.
Hi Bee. You are not alone in struggling to “see” differences. If I watch just one area - the poll or the distance the hind legs cover for example - it helps me to see a change. I hope that helps!
One question! Is the thumbs up “rule” just for dressage? Or for show jumping too? I see a lot of showjumpers with their thumbs facing inward. I’d love to know why?
Hi Amelia, Gillian Green here I have subscribed and sent my email I absolutely love all youre videos and have learnt so much so far I have competed and trained all different horses from broken in to FEI level and different breeds. I am now 61 years old and have a 15.1 Australian Stock horse quarter horse cross. I just wish to point out and ask youre opinion and help yes posture etc is most important but I have now ADVANCED Osteoporosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis my fingers are very bent and I have an exemption card from the EFA as I can not wear gloves in Official Comps etc My neck is also curved and my shoulders now are actually forward in their sockets !!! SO, yes I do my very best and am competing now but it is impossible for me now to change me bone structure. I have registered for the rider seminar but being in australia will have to watch later if you can email me but I have sent mine and see what other things I can do Love all your hints and I am doing a lot of old habbits so hope to correct these . It is incredible how you inspire all of us to ride better! ❤
It is something that I am focusing on. The judge noticed it in my last test. So now I am more focused on it.
Good for you! Let me know how it goes!
Thanks Amelia.

That's a great question! Thumbs up helps you keep a better more consistent contact with the bit!
