Man this helps I'm new to golf and have a 32 handicap and it made no sense to me how the scoring interacted with my handicap. Thanks for the easy explanation. Now to stop scoring f--- all.
I always work it the other way by adding the shots to the par of the hole. That sorts out the problem of when a 20 handicap player gets an ace on the stroke 2 par three hole. The hole becomes a par 5 for that player, so an ace is four under = 6 points!!
Great vid. Thanks. At what handicaps do the stroke index rules change? I.e. if 18 means you have 1 shot on every hole, and at 27 you get 1 shot on S.I 1-9 & 2 shots on S.I 10-18, at what handicap does the rule change from one to the other?
Thanks. I’m not 100% sure what you mean but I’ll give it a go! If your handicap is 18 then you get one shot on every hole… If your handicap is 19, you get one shot on every hole but 2 shots on stroke index 1. If your handicap is 20, you get one shot on every hole but two shots on stroke index 1 and stroke index 2. If that isn’t what you meant I will have another go at explaining better 😂
@@hcpgolf I would also like to know this. Is there a table you can work from? I have players on scratch and then players who are on a 45 for instance. At what point does each handicap get what points on each hole?
@@hcpgolfAaahhhhh I see. I had the same question as this guy. Basically, why does a 27 handicap get two shots on SI 1-9. I didn’t realise a 19 handicapper gets 2 on SI1 and so on. Makes way more sense now.
In Australia Stableford is the standard competition played at club level each week. There are still stroke rounds but only for Monthly medals. the computer calculates which holes players receive shots on. . Clubs play Stableford because it supposed to speed up play, ie when exceed net DB just pick up and go to next hole. Also if a player hits hi tee shot deep in trees, he simply wipes hole and moves to next rather than hitting multiple provisional balls. Stableford completion Favours high handicappers as its much easier for a 25 marker to have 40 points than for a 6 marker.
@hcpgolf Just found this and will be using this soon. Question: Do you always do all the math at each hole or is it normally acceptable to just track scores and do the points after in a local club open competition?
It depends on the course you’re playing - there should be a board at the course that explains what handicap plays to what around that specific golf course. So a 28.7 might play as a 29 on one course, but a 27 or even a 30+ on their courses.
Stableford is easy, its the standard scoring method and competiton used throughout clubs and competitions in Australia. Handicap is calculated as daily handicap for each course based on handicap index, so it will vary each day. Also varies if play from blue tees or red tees. Its easy to apply as the computer prints out a card which indicates where you get a shot. So if get a shot on par 4 means its a par 5, if you make 5 then get 2 points. If make 4 get 3 points. If make 6 get 1 point. Play ro your daily handicap =36 points. Highest points wins comp, ussually around 39 or 40pts. Further more all scores in golf link, handicap system, are on stableford basis.
With stableford once you cannot score a point on hole, just put down 0 points and pick up. If you play to your daily handicap you will have 36 points. In example above players should not have had 8s and 9s, just pick up when more than 7. The idea of points is to speed up play. Eg if you stand up on a tee on a hole where have a stroke on hole and top into water, then top next in water, you are out on that hole and just move to next where might score 4 for 4. Add up points at end. Most points wins. In Aussie all our competitions are stableford, vary rare to play stroke round.
I understand it all, except why smudge 1 shot on every hole with an 18 handicap and Jeff gets 2. What if someone's handicap was 15 Does the best player get 1 shot, and second best 2 shots and 1 shot on hardest 9, and worst player 2 shots on all holes? What if there is 4 players
I believe it goes on a ‘count back’ - so who scored best on the final 3 holes. If that’s a tie, then the final 6 holes. I may be wrong, but I think that’s how it goes 👍🏼⛳️
Excellent explanation!
Thanks!
Great video just needed a little explainer of a daily handicap at the end
Thanks
Really helpful for some just beginning like myself
Thanks I’m glad it helped 👍🏼
Great explanation. Straight to the point. Thanks 👍
Excellent vid thanks. Have been wondering how that works
Thanks mate ⛳️
Superb video. Will take me a few rounds to get quick at it but this was so easy. I’m off 18 at my place too so I shouldn’t go wrong
Thank you mate I’m glad it helped 👍🏼⛳️
Sooo easy to understand. Thank you heaps!
Glad it helped!

🤣 glad you found it helpful mate, good luck ⛳️
Great explanation and will be really useful for me, thanks for taking the time to explain it so well.
Glad it was helpful! ⛳️
Very clear explantation. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! ⛳️
Awesome! Now I also know how that works!
Glad I could help! ⛳️
Wow!! Mate, you made that so bloody simple I feel stupid. 😁👍
Haha thanks I’m glad it helped!
By far the best explanation on the TUBE !
Haha thanks pal 🙌🏼
Excellent explanation!.
I have a doubt, What happen if after taking out the handicap I get 0 or less (-1, -2….) ? what will be the score in that case?
Oh thank you so much. Explained for my simple mind. 🤣
I’m glad it’s helped!

If your handicap is 18 then you get one shot on every hole…
If your handicap is 19, you get one shot on every hole but 2 shots on stroke index 1.
If your handicap is 20, you get one shot on every hole but two shots on stroke index 1 and stroke index 2.
If that isn’t what you meant I will have another go at explaining better 😂
tbh that question is more confusing than understanding Stableford. The stroke index doesn't change, its set when they design the course
Handicap, I think you explained that one also. Not feeling so stupid now after all.

Brilliant
Thanks explained clearly
Glad it helped 👍🏼
Great explanation thanks. Why do people do this method instead of just stroke play and then at the end minus the handicap from the total score?
In Australia Stableford is the standard competition played at club level each week. There are still stroke rounds but only for Monthly medals.

I think most people total up after the round 👍🏼⛳️
Well done
Thanks
Saw you playing a four ball at longride a few days ago lol!
Haha 😂
Cheers for this, now I know!👍
Glad it helped!
So if a player is a 10 HCP, would they get one shot on the hardest 10 holes?
Correct ⛳️
How do you go about this if your handicap is down as say 28.7 or something do you round it up to 29 or play it as 28?
It depends on the course you’re playing - there should be a board at the course that explains what handicap plays to what around that specific golf course. So a 28.7 might play as a 29 on one course, but a 27 or even a 30+ on their courses.

Hi. If I have HCP 28, how many shots I have on each whole? On this card
Two shots on the 10 hardest holes, One shot on the 8 easiest holes
@@hcpgolf Thanks. Now I understand
What if u get more than double bogey? It’s no points? Not minus?
You can’t score more than a double bogey, worst score is zero - no minus points. It makes the game a bit less ruthless 😂

If someone was a 15 handicap, they would get 1 shot on the stroke index 1-15 but no shots on SI 16, 17 and 18
@@hcpgolf thank you makes sense now
Who wins when 2 or more players finished with the same points? The lower handicap player .?
I believe it goes on a ‘count back’ - so who scored best on the final 3 holes. If that’s a tie, then the final 6 holes. I may be wrong, but I think that’s how it goes 👍🏼⛳️
Countback is usually best score on holes 10 to 18.
If tied still, goes from last 3.
I've always wondered... what if a 36 handicapper gets a hole in one at say a stroke index 1 par 3 😂
6 points? 🤣
Karl gets f@$k all 😂😂😂😂
Its usually the case ha
