This is fantastic! I am so impressed with how you log this information and that the children are part of the process and understand the process. It would be wonderful (because I love your set up) if you could make these pages available on TpT as an editable document. I would pay for these. I am so impressed! When I get my own class I hope to be as an amazing teacher as you! You are so inspiring.
I haven't quite figured out how to make the document editable but I'm in the process of doing so. Follow me on TPT so you can see when I get it uploaded. Thank you for watching!
Do you have adobe? If so you can make it editable by making it a "form" Another route to go is to make a powerpoint version, flatten the pages and reinsert them as pics, then put textboxes where you would edit-- for example on the sight words. This sounds more complicated than it really is A great tutorial is on the3amteacher.blogspot.com/2012/11/techy-tuesday-on-thursday-how-to.html. Once your background images are flattened making it editable by adding the textboxes is pretty easy. Just make sure if you have a particular font that you embed it into the file.
This is great! I teach high school, but I can definitely see ways to apply the data graphs to skills my students are working on. Excited to implement this! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! I am working in my classroom right now and have completed my own student binder with dividers and labels and all. This video also gave me more ideas for a game plan. I appreciate that you share your knowledge and experiences! God bless!
I am using your data binder idea for my Kindergarten class and I love it!!! I had to pause your videos several of times to type the uppercase/lower case sheet. haha....Thanks for sharing!! It really does help. :)
Love your videos! I want to be a teacher and next year I'll be a freshman in college! Do you think you could make a video about your college experience (as an education major) or the process of becoming a teacher and how it went for you? I would LOVE to hear all about it ☺️
I love this! I'm just about to start my student teaching next semester and then move out into the classroom! I love watching your videos. They get me so so excited to be a teacher! Thank you for your inspiration :)
Love this! I am looking and waiting for this in TPT. It would be VERY useful! It seems like each student has a binder with a behavior log. Can you explain a little more about your system on how to log in the binders? When do you log the student's behavior? Is this a daily task for each student? Does the student take the binder home since the parents have to sign it? What about binders that are left at home or never returned? I am moving to 3rd grade this year and even as a veteran teacher, I have learned some amazing tips from you. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your data binders concept. Showing them and walking through it page by page was on point. Where did you get the sheets the students write on? When in the day did you review with the students their progress? After teaching kindergarten for four years, I appreciate your guidance....Grateful
+Isidora P YAY! Let me know how it goes and if you need some more tips. I love it in my room. It rally gets them ready for when they start collecting data second semester in science.
Now that you are teaching fourth grade, do you still use the data binders? If so, can you make a video regarding the changes you have made. Thanks so much for sharing this video because it has given me a new respect for data binders.
+Applejack 1522 Oh wow! That is awesome! I'm working on a blog post that is more detailed about how I am setting them up this year. Kuddos to your school. I love the idea.
+The Lettered Classroom I think we are fully implementing data binders next year, so I will probably do folders for the few I need this semester. I'm excited though. It seems like it is going to benefit student, teacher, and parent.
+bwimberly89 - I used PTO money to buy the binders. I am working on some upper grade additions as I prepare for my 4th graders. Also, be sure to follow iTeachTVNetwork on Periscope. I am doing a monthly show on their page dedicated to Data Binders! I also plan to do a more In-depth Data Binder Video on RUclips, but that will be down the road. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I love all your videos and information! I was wondering what do you with the binders at the end of the school year? Do you send them home or do you recycle them and just send home all the work? I love all that you do, but it all cost a lot of personal money. Our school gives a small budget. Anything extra, which seems to be everything and anything to organize the classroom, teacher and the students is not deemed as needed. Thank you for sharing all your tips!
You are so organized, and I am so appreciative of your hard work and willingness to share it with us. I have a question. How many students do you have during the course of a school year? I usually have about 140-145, and I can't imagine how I would keep up with that many binders. Do you have any suggestions?
+Annette Martinez think about what you teach and what is assessed. When I came up with the inserts for kindergarten I took the items that were already required by the county and made it into a yearly layout to show progress. I also added a de etchings like color words, number words, and shapes because I felt those were important. Once you have that think of the individual student. Maybe you have a student who needs to improve on handwriting, insert that. The purpose is to track data from that student and show progress of a period of time. Hope this helps!
Hi! Thanks for sharing :) could you talk about how this practically looks in the classroom? How often do you update/during what part of the day do you check in with each kiddo/etc? I would like to start data binders next year, as my school is beginning to implement Leader In Me. Thanks!
I am currently doing monthly episodes on iTeachTVNetwork's Periscope channel focusing specifically on Data Binders. You can see follow them (and me 'Lettered Class') See me on iTeachTVNetwork the 2nd Thursday of every month at 7ct Eventually I will do a more in-depth RUclips video on Data Binders but I don't have a time table.
Thanks for this video! Could you talk about how you store these in your class (especially for the Special Ed Students) and how you get the students to record their own data. Thanks OH. I'm a 3rd Grade teacher.
Our district breaks up the year in 4 9 weeks. Would you recommend that I assess kids on these skills at the end of the 9 weeks, or monthly as you have shown us? Is there a downside to doing it at the end of each quarter?
hi teacher Your video helped me more now! At last I saw a video guide for me to follow in times if I don't know what to do especiallyy status now I am going to practice in a Elementary School and I don't have any idea even little. I don't know how to deal in front of the students and engage 21st century. this video help me well. thank you
Hello, would it be possible to buy the different binder-templates? Were re-inventing the teachingstructure in my school, and teachers with no kindergarten experience will be teaching some of the K students now and then. This would be perfect for introducing the goals.
Thank you for your video, watching your channel has been very helpful for me. I noticed that you include a behavior log for each child that you seem to fill out and send home every day. How do you fit in filling out this behavior log on a daily basis?
+Natasha Roig I set routines in my room at the beginning of the year. I make time at the end of the day and it takes 5 minutes to get around to all of my students. Here is a video that gives you a peek at how I do it ruclips.net/video/PuVY4IIuU6g/видео.html
I love this! I love the idea of students being involved in their process and seeing their progression. If you could make these documents available in tpt I would but it! Thanks for sharing!
This is another excellent video! Thank you so much! I would love to know how often you work with the data binders. Do you plan in certain times each week, or do you work on them as needed? I have data binders, but I don't feel like I use them - I mainly just get them ready for when the kids need to take them home for parents to see. It's not an ongoing process. I'd love to hear about your process in using them. Thanks!
That is a great question! I work them into my writing conferences. My goal is to do one one each day during a writing conference so I call that student to my table and they bring me their writing binder and data journal. We review skills and discuss where they can grow as a learning. After that we review their writing. It works out perfect for my schedule and at the end of the days *sometimes* I have my students catching up on their smart centers and I can pull one to two students.
I have been teaching for several years in PreK but this year I am struggling to keep my voice. It seems I am always scratchy, a little hoarse or have lost my voice almost completely! I have read that this is a common problem for teachers and it isn't uncommon to develop polyps or cancer of the vocal chords! Any tips for keeping your voice? I dont yell at the kids but I do project my voice naturally, without thinking. I'm thinking of get a microphone clip-on. Help!!!!
+Kristen Widener I used an inch binder. Next year I'm using two inches. I'll be using it as a portfolio for the next two years and have my data binders online.
Hello, I'm an education major and I love this video! I'm wondering how you know to monitor students for learning loss? Is this just by experience or are there specific things you look out for? Thanks!
+The Lettered Classroom nope, it's a several week process for the student family conferences. It starts with an outline in which the identify two success' for the period and two struggles. They have to use data as evidence and explain the data (as you can see I got a d in social studies. Specifically, this is due to my poor homework grades. I received low homework grades due to ....) they also have to make 2 smart goals for the next semester. They also have to make. PowerPoint or prezi. Or a creative tri fold presentation. They also have to make invitations to give out to the family and any other people they wish to invite. I teach middle school btw. They do it 3 times a year. I really enjoy and it's a great way for them to take responsibility for their education as well as great family communication
Now that you teach 4th grade, can you do a video for how you set up your data binders for older students?? :) Also, does your partner teacher do binders in math or science?
Thank you so much! Unfortunately, with the move still in progress, I have not completed them for uploading...and then next week I can finally get into my classroom with all my stuff. I'm hoping to have them ready for Thursday, but I can't say for sure.
Hello from France ! This video is very interesting, in France we don't assess the students the way you do. I like your way very much, it shows the progress that the student makes. It's very clever ! Do you think it's adaptable to primary school students ? Aged 7 to 9 years old ? Thank you ! Marie-Hélène
+Marie-Hélène Lachaud thank you! Yes it is very adaptable. I am moving to fourth grade this year and am working on data binders for my students. Simply think of what you want stud nets to accomplish or keep track of and place those in your binders. Make it work for your students. Not every student will have the same contents.
I am such a fan of your videos! This will be my first year teaching kindergarten and I have been revisiting your earlier videos like crazy! I want to track data for my students. I was looking through your tpt store and I couldn't find these documents. Do you have these for sale? Thank you!
+April LaVai Hey there. I have it written down to do it soon. Thank you for the idea. I love talking about behavior management and I have a ton of resources to share with you all!

I love this. Worth doing. Very meaningful not just for students, but the teacher also.
Can you give a schedule of how you use the data blinder daily or weekly, 2nd grade teacher?
This is so helpful! My binders flopped last year and your binder seems easy to make, fill, file and read.
Great ideas and video. This was my first year of using data binders. After watching your video I am planning on changing a few things. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! I am working in my classroom right now and have completed my own student binder with dividers and labels and all. This video also gave me more ideas for a game plan. I appreciate that you share your knowledge and experiences! God bless!

Your data binder is perfect and exactly what I need is it still available for purchase at all?
one of my favorite vids of yours! Thank you!
How did you manage to keep up with students daily behavior? And also, I am curious as to how you went about homework when you taught kindergarten.
Would love to have an editable version of this!!! Will you have soon on TPT!! Would totally buy!
Working on it I promise!

So beautiful!!! Nice job! Do you keep a separate data sheet for yourself? Or do you use this for yourself as well?
How do you go about teaching the number or letter reversals?

How can I purchase a copy of the data binder?
I love this! I love the idea of students being involved in their process and seeing their progression. If you could make these documents available in tpt I would but it! Thanks for sharing!
I'm working on it I promise. Follow me on TPT to get the update for when it is uploaded.
I think I might use this for my own daughter :)

Hi there, What is your username on TPT? I tried the link above, but it doesn't work. Thank you.
Hi, do you have these templates on your blog or tpt? I'm a new teacher and your organization videos are a life saver.

+ModelEllaNicole Thank you!! Unfortunately, I don't offer the Kinder version of the data binders.
Why did you decide not to teach letters in the order of the alphabet? I'm curious!(:
+Erin Johnson - Developmentally it is easier for students to learn in this order. It is a progression presented by Harcourt
Did you have to purchase all these binders by yourself or is it something that you have one your supply list?? Same for the dividers. :)
Thanks!!
I purchased these with funds given to me by PTO and purchased through the school discount rate.
Thanks for sharing!!
amazing!
Do you sell your data binder pages?
Great video! Do you have a more extensive video on your behavior logs and classroom management. If you do, I'd love to learn from it! :-)
+April LaVai Hey there. I have it written down to do it soon. Thank you for the idea. I love talking about behavior management and I have a ton of resources to share with you all!
could you post these on TPT?
I hope to have them up soon! My planner has kept me very busy so far this summer!
Love it hopefully these ideas work for me I'm a 7th and 8thgr. teacher probably they may move me to 1st grade teacher
My school is doing the leader in me.
🗽
this seems insane for kinder.... th portfolios we use in australia are work samples then linked to curriculum outcomes
Jaclyn it's also more than what we would do for Kindergarten in Ontario, Canada but I can't imagine how helpful this would be when they start grade 1/2 etc. I'm starting this in January. I absolutely looooove it
That’s interesting. I’m considering doing something similar for Prek (US also) - colors, shapes, numbers 1-20, letters, drawing/writing, etc.
My School Uses Leader in me.
I like your Chanel name
