I like the idea of doing the gaslighting thing, then later actually casting the spells and gaslighting the party about gaslighting them earlier. What are you talking about, my magic was always exactly this effective

Fun fact, I did more or less this. I was playing a rogue Changeling, and pretending to be an Elf alchemist. I think my favorite part was about two months into gameplay, it came up that my character didn’t have dark vision and another player sighed and said “I thought you were at least being honest about being an elf”

Everybody in the party has long since figured out that their identity is fake but the Changeling is so commited to the bit that they refuse to drop it. Ever. Never ever. Never ever never.

During a 4th edition campaign one of the members in our party switched from an elf rogue to a changling caster of some sort (i forget, its been ages). And he just assumed his previous characters identity. I was the first to figure out something was up when he used an ability that was to magical. That was quite fun.

I once played someone that genuinely thought he was a bard. He had the entertainer background and actor feat, so he was a great artist, but every time he went into combat, he went unconcious as his great old one took over the controls. Kept waking up confused why all enemies were dead, people were running away screaming and why he was crying black blood.
With the actor feat, Mask of many Faces and a bit of minor illusion, he could sing duets all on his own.

I once legit succesfully faked casting speak with animals IRL. We were doing a treasure hunt when I was a kid, and we came to a fork in the road. There were a couple ducks there, and I pretended to talk to them. Meanwhile I used my skills of deduction to figure out which way we needed to go. I was right, everyone was baffled. I got a chest of gold(painted iron)bars. Absolute win for me. Always level both intellegence and charisma folks!

I did exactly this! I made a Githyanki who introduced himself as "Wohu Canlong, greatest warrior in all the land!". Whole table thought I was a playing a fighter since I would rush in to the front lines at all times. The DM and I had worked out code words for all my spells and abilities, with my personal favorite being "I believe in you" meaning "I use Bardic Inspiration". The party actually was more shocked at the reveal of my true class than when my real backstory (and name) came out. Good times!

I had a draconic bloodline sorcerer who had an arm which was draconic and she lived in a place that had a prophecy that said that he who was born in the same family as the sorcerous claw would be the one to depose the false duke (her uncle), who was fairly superstitious.

This would honestly be kind of neat if you were running them as a Mastermind Rogue. You can Help your allies attack enemies from 30 ft away, which is kind of like Bardic Inspiration. You can pretend to magically unlock things (when really you're just using Thieves Tools). Who needs Disguise Self, when you have Disguise Kits and the ability to mimic other people's speech? And you're a Rogue, so you can always steal magic items to sell your deception. (Granted, you're not a Thief, so you don't get the class ability to use any magic item, regardless of prerequisite. But you can use items that don't have that, or a Ring of Spell Storing if you've got a Wizard NPC you can bribe).

It's REALLY easy to gaslight the party when one minute you're acting like a fighter and the next you're throwing magic missile and because you picked a class from one of the 1000 3.5 splatbooks your party may or may not have fully read you get situations where the "skill monkey" suddenly flying jump kicks a doppleganger into the next timezone and someone exclaims, "Wait he can do that?!"

I've long wanted to play an arrogant, egotistical bard who is NOT a dick: He's fully convinced his party members are awesome people, just like he is! Instead of using blistering invective to insult people, it's proclamations that they can't hope to stand against such a mighty force, especially with HIM leading the way! His bardic inspiration's all about gassing up himself and everyone else in the party, and if they DO fail, then well, it's just due to circumstance or a dirty trick from the foe, because he and his friends are too awesome to just FAIL! That's loser talk, and he doesn't hang out with losers, and his party sure as hell aren't losers, because they hang out with him!

I need to find another dnd group, because this is interesting to try. (I normally play rouge characters or purposefully weak dnd characters).

Why, why does that character, just sitting on a chair and changing their expression every now and again, make me feel thing?
