Hi, my name is Nicole Jody. I am a pediatric ophthalmologist and I love doing pediatric ophthalmology because taking care of kids is always more fun. When a child gets an eye exam, it's actually really fun for them. What we really need to do is make sure that it seems like a game, because unlike when they go to their pediatrician, they have to engage with us, they have to be part of it, they have to look around, they have to look where we want them to look. And so we use lots of toys, we use stickers, we use videos, we use funny voices, and all of these ways keep the child's attention so that we can see what's going on with their eyes. In medical school, I thought I would probably do something with pediatrics. I really love working with kids. I really like being around the kids and taking care of them.
And then ophthalmology was a subspecialty that I discovered, and I thought it was really exciting. There's lots of really neat things you can do. The surgeries are really fun, and you really get to change people's lives, especially kids. You get to change their lives and keep their vision, keep their functioning all the way through their life, starting as teeny tiny babies. I grew up in Arizona. My mom is from Lowell. I did medical school here in Louisville, and then I went to Wisconsin, Arizona and Michigan for my residency. And so now I am back and excited to be here. For fun, I have three children, and so we do a lot of things together. We go camping, we go hiking, we go swimming, and then when I'm not doing that, we like to go skiing and scuba diving.
